Justen Counsil
INDEPENDENCE - Justen D. Counsil, 41, of Independence, died March 3, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Independence from injuries sustained in a car accident.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Park Baptist Church, 2414 N. Eighth. Pastor Keith Springer will officiate. Cremation will then take place.
Friends may call at Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8.
Counsil was born June 29, 1959, in Cedar Vale, to Doris (Sutton) and Larry Counsil. He grew up in Elk City and attended area schools. In May 1999 he received his general equivalency diploma.
Counsil lived most of his life in the Independence area.
On June 19, 1982, he married Sandy Walker at the Elk City Reservoir. They later divorced.
On April 15, 2000, he married Vicki Burr-Blaisdell in Independence.
Counsil worked for Sherwood Construction, Davis Lawn Service and Cessna Corp. where he was employed at the time of his death.
Survivors include his wife, Vicki Blaisdell Counsil, and a son, Cole J. Counsil, both of Independence; two stepchildren, Crystal Burr, Independence, and Nicholas Burr, Lawton, Okla.; five brothers, Larry Counsil and Rusty Counsil, both of Independence, Joseph Counsil and Chad Crigger, both of Elk City, and Chip Crigger, Longton; five sisters, Tammy Hearne, Judy Duke and Eron Bruce, all of Independence, Thresa Vaughn, Emporia, and Sally Davis, Texoma, Okla.; and his stepfather, Butch Crigger, Elk City.
Lili Halgedahl
EMPORIA - Rosalie V. "Lili" Halgedahl, 85, formerly of Winfield, died March 1, 2001, at Newman County Hospital in Emporia.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Beech Music Hall on the Emporia State University campus. A private graveside service will be held later.
Memorial donations may be made to two scholarship funds in her husband's name, one in music theater and one in strings, at Emporia State University. Contributions may be sent to Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, 605 State, Box 175, Emporia, KS 66801.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon Wednesday through Saturday.
Halgedahl was born April 27, 1915, in Rochester, N.Y., to Federico and Conceta (Ponticello) Bondi.
After graduating from Rochester East High School and the University of Rochester, she met her husband, Howard Halgedahl, then a master's candidate at the Eastman School of Music. They married on March 24, 1942, in Hays and lived in Winfield from the early 1950s to the mid-1960s.
Halgedahl earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Southwestern College in 1957 and a Master of Arts degree in English from Wichita State University in 1978.
She was a member of the Etude study club, the Faculty Wives reading group, the board of directors of the Emporia Arts Council and the advisory board for ESU's music department.
Her husband died May 4, 1987.
Survivors include a son, Frederick Halgedahl, Reinbeck, Iowa; a daughter, Kristin Halgedahl, Santa Rosa, Calif.; and a sister, Mary A. Smith, Apopka, Fla.
Eunice Stambaugh
WICHITA - Eunice J. Stambaugh, 82, retired Boeing Wichita payroll clerk, died March 5, 2001.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Cochran Mortuary.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.
Survivors include her companion, Charles "Dusty" Cloud, Winfield; a son, Dennis Stambaugh, Wichita; a daughter, Jeanette Stotler, Dodge City; three brothers, Eli McClenahan Jr., Las Vegas, James McClenahan, Cabool, Mo., and Wayne McClenahan, Kansas City, Mo.; six sisters, Alice Franklin, Utica, Velma Shaw, Mountain Grove, Mo., Elvira Brill, Cabool, Mo., Eva Clingerman and June Walburn, both of Wichita, and Joyce Tinsley, Republic, Mo.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Gorgie VanBuskirk
HOWARD - Georgia Marie "Gorgie" VanBuskirk, 96, longtime resident of Howard, died Jan. 6, 2001, at Howard Twilight Manor.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church. The Revs. Marty Dewitt and Dean Brown will officiate, and Jim Perkins will give the eulogy. Sharon Hughes will be the organist, and Ken Mitchell and Kevin Mitchell will sing "How Great Thou Art" and "In the Garden." Rebekah Lodge 154 and Columbia Chapter 142 Order of Eastern Star will conduct services. Private burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the First Baptist Church and Howard Twilight Manor. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.
VanBuskirk was born Feb. 21, 1904, in Chautauqua County, to Laura Jane (Bates) and Samuel Otto Lane. She graduated from Moline High School.
On Oct. 15, 1921, she married Charles Bryan VanBuskirk in Howard. They remained residents of the Moline and Howard area throughout their lives. A homemaker, VanBuskirk spent many years taking care of young children. Her husband preceded her in death.
She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church and a member of the Rebekah Lodge and Columbia Chapter 142, Order of Eastern Star, all of Howard.
A son, James Edward VanBuskirk, died at birth.
Survivors include two daughters, Geraldine Wood, Alamogordo, N.M., and Joan Harris, Salina; a sister, Mildred Nash, Thousand Palms, Calif.; four grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Keith Hawkins, Winfield, has been like a son to her for many years.
George Goff
George O. Goff, 77, of 716 E. 17th, Winfield, died March 7, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Burial with full military honors will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
Goff was born July 3, 1923, in Drummond, Okla., to Nellie (Hepner) and Charles Goff. He was raised and educated in the Drummond area before moving to Winfield in 1940.
On July 22, 1944, he married Freda Jordan in Newkirk.
During World War II, he served in the military from 1944 to 1946.
A carpenter by trade, he operated Goff and Sons Construction Service.
Goff was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Freda Goff, Winfield; two sons, Jerry Lynn Goff, Winfield, and Galen Kim Goff, Wichita; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A son, Gary Goff, preceded him in death.
Don Long
Don R. Long, 78, lifelong resident of Winfield, died March 6, 2001, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Union Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Long was born Sept. 11, 1922, on a farm east of Winfield, to Veda (Smith) and James Clarence Long. He was raised on a farm that was a land grant from President Ulysses S. Grant to the Orr family. In 1940 he graduated from Winfield High School.
After high school he was drafted into the U.S. Navy where he served a short time and was honorably discharged. He returned to the farm to help his father.
Long's first wife, Ruth Young, died in 1980.
In November 1982 he married Bobbie Ringgold, and they made their home in Winfield.
After his father died, Long bought two farms adjacent to the one he grew up on and farmed until his death.
Long was a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge 732, American Legion Post 10 and the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons and was on the board of the Timberlake Watershed.
Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Long, Winfield; a son, Donald Max Long, Reno, Nev.; a daughter, Teri Kargo, Wichita; three stepdaughters, Candy Peacock, Maple Valley, Wash., Connie Norris, Onalaska, Wash., and Cherrie Tsai, Placentia, Calif.; two brothers, William Long and Clyde Long, both of Winfield; and five grandchildren.
Judith McAlister
Judith A. McAlister, 59, of 1312 Whittier, Winfield, died March 6, 2001, at her home.
A Rosary will be said tonight at 7 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home before the service.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and Holy Name Catholic Church.
McAlister was born July 2, 1941, in Cedar Vale, to Lorraine (Holverson) and Gerald S. Donohue. When she was six, the family moved to Winfield, and she graduated from Winfield High School in 1959.
In 1969 she married Melvin McAlister. They later divorced.
She had worked as a beautician at Good Samaritan Village and later in Cumbernauld Village's dietary department. She was also an Avon representative for over 25 years.
McAlister was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and Altar Society. She had also helped with Walnut Valley 4-H Club.
Survivors include a son, Aaron McAlister, a daughter, Rebecca McAlister, and her mother, Lorraine Donohue, all of Winfield; a brother, Jim Donohue, Valley Center, and two grandchildren.
Cora Brewer
EVERETT, Wash. - Cora Brewer, 80, formerly of Winfield, died March 6, 2001, in Everett.
Services were held March 10 at Evergreen Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4504 Broadway, Everett, WA 98203.
A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association.
Brewer was born June 30, 1920, on a farm in Cowley County, to Art and Doll Farnsworth.
She married John S. Brewer 59 years ago, and they lived in Wichita before moving to the Pacific Northwest in 1968.
Survivors include her husband, John Brewer, and a daughter, Rhonda Thomas, both of Everett; one granddaughter and one great-grandson.
