Emalee Hall

Emalee Nicole Hall, infant daughter of Leslie and Anthony Hall of Winfield, was stillborn March 24, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Highland Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors in addition to her parents include two brothers, Trey Hall and Steven Hall, Winfield; her grandparents, Howard Morton, Arkansas City, and Steve and Susie Hall, Winfield; and her great-grandmothers, June Radar and Elsie Wallsmith, both of Winfield.

Blanche Sweet

GRENOLA - Charlotte Blanche Sweet, 91, of Grenola, died March 26, 2001, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Grenola United Methodist Church. The Rev. Don Foster will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Brian, Thomas, Tony, Todd, Robert and John Sweet, Shari Peres, Susie Teaque, Mary Colclazier, Sharon Mecham and Jackie Van Orden.

Memorials have been established with the Grenola Historical Society and Grenola Recreation Youth Projects. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Sweet was born Oct. 17, 1909, on a farm near Cloverdale in Chautauqua County, to Emma Isabelle (McClure) and Charles Wesley Morris. She attended Spring Creek Grade School and Grenola High School.

On Aug. 25, 1927, she married Floyd Ernest Sweet in Grenola. They lived in Grenola all their lives except for seven years in Osceola, Mo. They owned the locker plant and grocery store in Grenola as well as the Grenola laundry for several years.

Sweet attended the First Christian Church and was a 30-year member of the Busy Bee Quilting Club. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Royal Neighbors and Veterans of Foreign Wars of Sedan. For many years she served as a J-Hawker 4-H leader.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include four sons, Ernest Sweet, Blackfoot, Idaho, Floyd Sweet, Hutchinson, and John Sweet and Jimmie Sweet, both of Grenola; three sisters, Velda Harp, Wichita, Faye Williams, Fredonia, and Mary Morlan-Jering, Gooding, Idaho; 11 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Edith Yount

Edith Catherine Yount, 85, longtime resident of Winfield, died March 24, 2001, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight. The family will greet friends from 7 to 9.

Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church, American Heart Association, Hospice Inc. and Winfield Rest Haven Activities Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home or church.

Yount was born April 29, 1915, in Udall, to Goldie (Kennedy) and Oliver Joseph Hippensteel. She was educated in Udall, Rock, Akron and Winfield schools. The family moved to Winfield when she was 13.

On April 22, 1933, she married Joseph James Yount in Newkirk. They resided in Winfield throughout their 51-year marriage. A homemaker, Yount assisted her husband with his oilfield service businesses before retirement. He died Sept. 19, 1984.

A member of the First Christian Church, she had resided at Winfield Rest Haven apartments since April 1998.

Survivors include her son, Joe Yount Jr., Winfield; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Caylea Inglett

Services for Caylea Arica Inglett were held at 2 p.m. March 27, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Steve Souther officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Music included "Wind Beneath My Wings" and "Jesus Loves the Little Children." Gwen Lumbert was the organist.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Pearl Shivers

EUREKA - Pearl Shivers, 96, of Eureka, formerly of Winfield, died March 26, 2001, at the Medicalodge in Eureka.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Magnolia Memorial Gardens in Bristow, Okla.

A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church of Eureka. Contributions may be sent in care of Campbell-Kelley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045.

Shivers was born Oct. 5, 1904, at Alton, Mo., to Ida Jane (Harmon) and Joseph Henry Roach. The family moved to the Tulsa, Okla., area when she was eight. She attended schools in Morris, Okla., and Turley, Okla.

In 1919 she married Roy Bill Christian, and they moved to the Winfield area. After they divorced in 1922, she moved to Bristow, Okla.

In 1941 she married Steve Shivers in Texas, and in 1942 they moved to Eureka. He died in September 1949.

Shivers owned and operated Westside Laundry in Eureka from 1952 to 1965 and also worked as a cook at the Truck Stop, Barb's Cafe' and nursing homes. She operated a doughnut shop before becoming the owner and operator of the City Cafe'. Prior to her retirement in 1997, she was featured on "Hatteberg's People" on KAKE TV.

Shivers was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Eureka Area Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include a son, Bill Christian, Bishop, Texas; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A son, Robert Frank Christian, preceded her in death.

Gregory Chamberland

Gregory J. Chamberland, 43, of 2016 Holloway Drive, Winfield, died March 26, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. to service time Friday. A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel.

A memorial has been established with Holy Name Catholic Church.

Chamberland was born Nov. 29, 1957, in Winfield, to Shirley (Kiss) and W.J. "Bill" Chamberland. He attended Winfield schools and was also home schooled by his parents.

He assembled water cooler faucets at home for Twin Rivers Developmental Support.

A member of Holy Name Catholic Church, he was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his parents, Bill and Shirley Chamberland, Winfield; two brothers, Michael Chamberland, Sedan, and James Chamberland, Marion; and three sisters, Elizabeth Frazier and Catherine Bowman, both of Winfield, and Cynthia Bland, Burden.

Ireta Williams

ARKANSAS CITY - Ireta M. Williams, 64, former resident of Burden, Grenola, Winfield and Wellington, died March 26, 2001, at Medicalodge East in Arkansas City.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Wilmot Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight. The family will receive visitors at the David E. Williams home, 1212 Pine, Winfield.

Memorials have been established with the Kansas Dialysis Center at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita and Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Williams was born Feb. 1, 1937, in Wichita, to Iva DeLores (Sevidge) and Frank Melton Rorabaugh. The family moved to Ponca City when she was seven years old, and she attended school there.

On Aug. 25, 1954, she married David Lee "Pete" Williams in Douglass. They lived in Douglass, Florence, Grenola and Burden before moving to Wellington in 1990. Her husband died Feb. 25, 1995.

A homemaker, Williams was affiliated with the Christian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Sue Wright, Deepwater, Mo.; five sons, Jerry Lee Williams and David Edward Williams, both of Winfield, Charles Eugene Williams, Baxter Springs, Lance Melton Williams and Frank Edward Williams; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A son, Victor Wayne Williams, preceded her in death.

Russell Briggs

Russell F. Briggs, 89, of 702 E. 17th, Winfield, died March 26, 2001, at his home.

Private services will be held.

A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Disease Research Foundation. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.

Briggs was born July 18, 1911, in Peck, to Lily (Lewis) and Chester Arthur Briggs. He was raised on a farm near El Dorado.

On July 3, 1931, he married Verona A. Gnagy in El Dorado. They made their home in El Dorado for a couple of years, then he went to work for Texaco Oil Co. as an oilfield pumper and they lived near Douglass. Then they moved to the Akron community where they lived for 21 years. In 1976 they moved to Winfield, and he retired after 44 years with Texaco. He then worked part time at Bob's True Value Hardware for 10 years.

Briggs was a member of the Evangelical Free Church.

Survivors include his wife, Verona Briggs, Winfield; two daughters, Coleen A. Finley and Joyce M. McArtor, both of Winfield; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A son, Norman Russell Briggs, died in 1955.

Eva Gatton

DEXTER - Eva Marie Gatton, 85, of Dexter, died March 28, 2001, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 7 at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established with the Dexter Baptist Church and Grouse Valley Manor. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Gatton was born Oct. 8, 1915, at Hoosier, to Nora (Hawley) and William Henry Martling. She was raised in the Highland community east of Dexter and later attended Dexter High School.

On Sept. 23, 1936, she married Emmett P. Daniel in Sedan. They lived and worked on their farm east of Dexter throughout their marriage. After her husband's death July 16, 1968, she maintained the farm for eight years.

On March 20, 1976, she married David R. Gatton in Dexter. They resided on the Gatton farm east of Burden for 20 years, then moved to Grouse Valley Manor in 1996.

A homemaker, Gatton was a member of the Dexter Baptist Church where she had been an active member of the Women's Missionary Society. She was also affiliated with the Burden Senior Citizens.

Survivors include her husband, David R. Gatton, Dexter; two daughters, Margaret Marie Massey, Dexter, and Marilyn Linda Banister, Arkansas City; three sons, Marvin Emmett Daniel, Albuquerque, N.M.; Richard Gatton, Burden, and Ron Gatton, Easton, Md.; four sisters, Lucille Mueller, Haysville, Nellie Hastings, Lees Summit, Mo., Ruby Howard, Wichita, and Neva Nelson, Las Cruces, N.M.; two brothers, Frank Martling, Wichita, and Dean Martling, Arkansas City; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
