Lucille Tackett

ARKANSAS CITY - Lucille Virginia Tackett, 87, a resident of Presbyterian Manor and former longtime resident of Winfield, died April 3, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight and until noon Friday.

A memorial has been established with Northside Baptist Church in Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Tackett was born Nov. 6, 1913, in Springfield, Mo., to Nola Mae (Reed) and Owen C. Woods. The family moved to Kansas where she was educated in the Herington area. She graduated from Herington High School in 1932 and from Kansas School of Cosmetology in Wichita in 1934.

On Aug. 30, 1935, she married Ray Ernest Tackett in Caldwell. They moved to Winfield in 1951.

Tackett was employed for a number of years at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center, Manufacturers Shoe Outlet and Kerr's.

A homemaker, she was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Her husband died in August 1971. A son, Daniel Joe Tackett, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Ernie Tackett, Winfield; a sister, Betty Beckerdite, Missouri; and five grandchildren.

Jean Mohr

DERBY - D. Jean Miller-Harrington Mohr, 66, of Derby, died April 3, 2001,

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pleasantview Baptist Church.

A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association. Contributions may be made through Smith Mortuary.

Mohr was born July 28, 1936, in St. Joseph, Mo., to Helen (Chivens) and Ralph Miller.

A former resident of Mulvane and Wichita, she worked as a Wal-Mart associate.

She attended the First Baptist Church in Clearwater for 18 years and was a member of the Kansas & Oklahoma Steam and Gas Engine Association.

Survivors include her husband, Maynard Mohr, Derby; a son, William Harrington, Mulvane; a daughter, Debbie Dolley, Wichita; two stepsons, Bradley Mohr and Randy Mohr; four stepdaughters, Marsha Ann Pata, Jayne Carlburg, Terry Gresham and Ellen Brown; a brother, Keith Miller; a sister, Carolyn Hines, Banning, Calif; four grandchildren, 15 stepgrandchildren and 16 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Vern Livengood

The Rev. Vern Dee Livengood, 85, of Winfield, died April 4, 2001.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The family requests that remembrances be directed to the Vern and Lois Livengood Scholarship Fund, Southwestern College, 100 College, Winfield, KS 67156-2499.

Livengood was born July 19, 1915, in Kinsley, to Emilia L. (Quasebarth) and Claude B. Livengood. In May 1920 the family moved to an Edwards County farm where they lived until he graduated from Centerview High School in 1933.

Livengood began his 44 1/2 years as a Methodist pastor in 1933 at the church in Beeler. He attended Garden City Junior College and was pastor of two schoolhouse congregations in 1935-37 and two rural churches while attending Southwestern College in 1937-39. He also served as a pastor while attending Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas from 1939-41. He received his Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1942.

On Sept. 21, 1941, he married Lois Carson of Winfield, a Southwestern classmate. That same month he was assigned to the Burden Methodist Church.

In July 1942 he became a U.S. Army chaplain, served a year in training and then spent 27 months in England, France, Belgium and Germany, including six months on the front line.

Livengood later served churches in Lindsborg, Scott City, Wichita, Wellington, Concordia, Liberal and Anthony. New church buildings were erected in Scott City and Bethany during his tenure.

In May 1980 the Livengoods retired and moved to Winfield. In February 1995 they moved to Cumbernauld Village. Livengood continued serving at Grace United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Livengood, Winfield; a daughter, Judy Peakes, Lansing, Mich.; two sons, Steve Livengood, Washington, D.C., and Tom Livengood, Spring, Texas; a sister, Fern Moose, Bethany, Okla.; four brothers, Earl Livengood, Campbell, Calif., Marion Livengood, South Hutchinson, Cecil Livengood, Overland Park, and Charles Livengood, Meridian, Idaho.; and eight grandchildren.

Melba Strother

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - Melba Stratton Strother, 99, formerly of Winfield, died March 25, 2001, in a Santa Monica nursing home.

Following services in Santa Monica, she will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C.

Strother was born Nov. 18, 1901, in Arkansas City and spent her childhood in Winfield where she graduated from Winfield High School in 1919. The following year, she entered Kansas State College in Manhattan where she was affiliated with Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

In 1924 she married Kenneth Strother, a high school classmate who had recently graduated from West Point and been commissioned in the Army. Embarking on a life as an Army wife that was to last for 30 years, she accompanied her husband to San Antonio, Texas, and established their first home. They were stationed in several locations in the United States, the Philippines and Puerto Rico until her husband was sent overseas in 1943. After World War II, the family lived in the United States and later in Japan during the occupation.

After her husband retired from the Army in 1954, they moved to Santa Monica. Strother became involved in community activities, including the Red Cross, Kappa Kappa alumnae, her church and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Strother Field was named for Strother's brother-in-law, Donald Root Strother. The youngest of the five Strother sons (her husband was the eldest), he was killed over Java in the first month of World War II.

Survivors include her husband of 76 years, retired U.S. Army Col. Kenneth C. Strother, Santa Monica; a daughter, Joanna S. Nicol, Falls Church, Va.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Clara Morgan

Services for Clara J. Gray Morgan were held at 2 p.m. April 4, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Revs. Scott Schaefer, Steve Strom and David Nichols officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Sara Weinert was the organist, and Kathy Waite and Rex Beeney were the vocalists. Music included "Amazing Grace," "Beyond the Sunset," "In the Garden" and "Peace in the Valley."

Honorary casket bearers were Mark Bogner, Elmo Bonesteel, Clayton Crawford, Lee Glantz, Hershell Klassen, Floyd Mayfield, Ralph Miller, Tom McNeish, Eli Rush and Clyde Shay.

Casket bearers were Keith Archer, Mace Archer, Ed Bogner, Henry Eggleston, Chris Law and David Tasker.

A memorial has been established with the Evangelical Free Church.

Carolyn Carson

ARKANSAS CITY - Carolyn Frances (Nuckolls) Carson, 55, of Arkansas City, died April 4, 2001, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Lance Carrithers will officiate. A reception will follow. Cremation has been effected, and burial will be in Oklahoma City.

A memorial has been established with Good Samaritan Village. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Carson was born Jan. 12, 1946, in Okmulgee, Okla., to Eloise (Berry) and Carl W. Nuckolls.

On April 9, 1966, she married Robert J. Carson in Oklahoma City.

Carson graduated from the University of New Mexico at Gallup in 1985.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Robert J. Carson, Arkansas City; a son, Robert M. Carson, Roswell, N.M.; her parents, Carl and Eloise Nuckolls, and a brother, David Nuckolls, all of Oklahoma City; and two granddaughters.

Grace Dexter

ELK CITY - Grace Dexter, 89, homemaker, of Elk City, died April 4, 2001, at Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Graves-Baird Chapel in Sedan. Burial will be in Hale Cemetery. The Rev. Dois Nix will officiate.

A memorial has been established with the Center for Basic Cancer Research. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Dexter was born May 20, 1911, in Hale, to Adry (Garst) and Ayleet Ferguson.

On Dec. 5, 1938, she married Leonard Ray Dexter in Independence. He died Aug. 3, 1968.

Survivors include three sons, Gary Dexter and Bill Dexter, both of Winfield, and Ken Dexter, Haven; a sister, Pearl Ferguson, Independence; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Beverly Montgomery

CEDAR VALE - Beverly D. Montgomery, 61, of Cedar Vale, died April 5, 2001, at her home.

No service is planned. Cremation has taken place. Wheeler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

The family requests that memorial contributions be given to Hospice Inc. or the Kansas Crippled Children's Foundation in Wichita.

Montgomery was born Nov. 21, 1939, in Wellington, to Neoma (Metz) and Raymond F. Sidebottom. She was raised in the Wellington area and graduated from Wellington High School.

In 1966 she married Dale Montgomery. They lived in Coldwater before moving to Cedar Vale 17 years ago. She worked as a bartender and a store clerk.

Survivors include her husband, Dale Montgomery, Cedar Vale; three daughters, Charlotte Montgomery, Zion, Ill., Sandy Jenkins, Cedar Vale, and Kelley Pitcar, Amarillo, Texas; two sons, Gregory Montgomery, Wichita Falls, Texas, and Larry Montgomery, Blue Springs, Mo.; three brothers, Larry Sidebottom, Bakersfield, Calif., Bobby Sidebottom, Gainesville, Texas, and Johnny Sidebottom, Ridgecrest, Calif.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Henry Kampschroeder

Services for Henry Carl Kampschroeder were held at 10 a.m. April 6, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Kirk Womacks officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery. American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 performed military graveside ceremonies.

Jaci Thompson-Hall sang "In the Garden" and "Peace in the Valley."

Casket bearers were Roy Barger, Drew Kampschroeder, Ronald Olm and Larry, Mark and Todd Womacks.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.
