Richard McConn

Richard McConn, 82, of 321 W. 10th, Winfield, died June 16, 2001, at Cumbernauld Village.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 8 tonight.

Memorials have been established with the Kansas Veterans Home and the American Heart Association.

McConn was born May 20, 1919, in Winfield, to Fannie (Cusick) and Mark McConn. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1937 and attended Kansas State University.

On May 30, 1942, he married Vida M. Deckard in Winfield. She died Nov. 12, 2000.

McConn, a U.S. Army veteran, retired from the Kansas Department of Transportation as chief relocation officer of the Right of Way Department in Topeka.

He was a past president of Chapter 5 of the International Right of Way Association and a member of the Winfield Masonic Lodge, American Legion and Elks Lodge.

Survivors include two sons, Rick McConn, Truckee, Calif., and Patric McConn, Broken Arrow, Okla.; and four grandchildren.

Nancy Cramer

WICHITA - Nancy Cramer, 93, of Wichita, retired Independent Oil Operators secretary, died June 16, 2001.

Downing & Lahey Mortuary will announce arrangements.

Cramer was born Sept. 20, 1907 in Illinois and moved with her family to Winfield.

She attended Washburn University. After teaching for a time she worked in San Francisco and New York for the United Nations and was in charge of transportation.

After moving to Wichita, Cramer was office manager for Wharton Oil Co. In later years she made her home in Larksfield Place.

Survivors include a niece, Emily Orr, Claremont, Calif., and her Wichita "family," the Everett Bradley and E.W. Strong families.

Cleo Bainter

Services for Cleo D. Bainter were held at 2 p.m. June 16, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Wallace Wartick officiated. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery near Arkansas City.

Judy Wolfe was the pianist, and Jackie Sutton sang "The Great Speckled Bird." The congregation sang "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder."

Honorary casket bearers were Bill Brooks, George and Paul Parsons and Bill Rowe.

Casket bearers were Rex Burdett, Jason Gilliam and Jeff, Jody, Jerid and John Sutton.

Memorials have been established with the Grenola Christian Church and the Cedar Vale Community Hospital Activity Fund.

Lulavon Flock

HOWARD - Lulavon Belle "Lue" Flock, 95, of Howard, formerly of Severy, died June 9, 2001, at Howard Twilight Manor.

Services were at 11 a.m. June 16 at Zimmerman Funeral Home. Marty Taliaferro officiated, and burial was in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Eureka Church of Christ. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Flock was born June 26, 1905, at Fiat, in Elk County, to Margaret (Wilson) and Marion Speer. She attended rural schools and grew up in the Elk County area.

On April 15, 1926, she married John Forrest Flock in Sedan. They lived northeast of Howard on a farm until 1944. They then moved to Winfield and in the spring of 1958 moved to Severy. Her husband died in 1970.

In 1988 she went to live with her daughter, Mary Margaret. In 1995 she suffered a stroke and moved to Twilight Manor.

Flock was a longtime member of the Church of Christ and had been a member of the Eureka Church of Christ for many years.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Margaret Hukle, Wichita, and Beverly Lue Fuqua, Peace Valley, Mo.; a son, Donald Flock, Rockport, Maine; two sisters, Aline Benest, Severy, and Mildred Lawman, Little Rock, Ark.; 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

A son, Ronald Flock, preceded her in death.

Sydnia Young

CEDAR VALE - Services for Sydnia Lyn Young were held at 2 p.m. June 18, 2001, in Ozro Cemetery at Cedar Vale. The Rev. Stanley Upchurch officiated. Congregational hymns were "The Lord's Prayer" and "In the Garden."

Casket bearers were Steve Alexander, Donald Cox, Denny Finger, John Foster, Rick Holister and Fred Rayborn.

Memorials have been established with Cedar Vale Nursing Center and Hospice Inc.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Ernest Magnus

ARKANSAS CITY - Ernest Fred Magnus, 67, of Arkansas City, died June 19, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Maple City Cemetery. Jesse Kindred will officiate.

The family asks that donations be made to assist with the purchase of a grave marker. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Magnus was born July 18, 1933, in Arkansas City, to Bertha Carrie (Vaughn) and Earl William Magnus. He was raised in Cedar Vale and graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1952. He later attended Arkansas City Junior College.

During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Collins, Colo.

On Nov. 17, 1955, he married Doris Eleanor McCall in Raton, N.M. They made their home first in Cedar Vale, then moved to Arkansas City in the early 1960s.

Magnus was a self-employed contractor for many years. He also worked for Dixie-Portland Mills and L.G. Pike Construction. He and his wife owned and operated a cafe in Cedar Vale and the D&E Cafe in Winfield. They also worked for the Cowley County Juvenile Home and served as foster parents and grandparents.

Magnus's wife died in October 2000.

Survivors include three sons, Eric Magnus, Overland Park, Kevin Magnus, Arkansas City, and Jerry Tucker, Americus; a brother, Gerald D. Magnus, Cedar Vale; a sister, Velda Hatcher, Arkansas City; and one grandchild.

Katherine Milton

PEABODY - Katherine C. Milton, 64, longtime resident of Winfield, died June 19, 2001, at Westview Manor in Peabody.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Union-Graham Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with Westview Manor. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Milton was born Dec. 28, 1936, in Winfield, to Juanita O. (Rhine) and Wesley R. Keasling. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from high school in 1955. She attended Southwestern College and later received her cosmetology certificate from Cowley County Community College.

She then moved to Kansas City for a couple of years before returning to Winfield in 1957.

On May 31, 1968, she married Amos L. Milton in Miami, Okla. He died in 1990.

Milton was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, John Wesley Oliver, Amarillo, Texas; her mother, Juanita Keasling, Arkansas City; a brother, Marvin Keasling, Winfield; and a sister, Linda Jean Lovette, Derby.

Oletha Stoops

MOLINE - Oletha Barbara Stoops, 90, formerly of Elk Falls, died June 19, 2001, at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. Dale Burnett will officiate. Private burial will be in Moline Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Elk Falls congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Stoops was born Dec. 5, 1910, in Lamont, Okla., to Pearl Ethel (Moody) and Arthur Edward VanSickle. She graduated from high school in Cherokee, Okla., and completed business college in Wichita.

During the early years of the Great Depression, Stoops returned to Oklahoma to assist her parents. While there, she became a waitress and met Ralph E. Stoops who worked for Gulf Oil Co. They married on June 14, 1931.

Because of her husband's work, they moved periodically. In 1944 they moved to a farm near Elk Falls.

Stoops played the piano and sang until she had a stroke in 1998. She became a Jehovah's Witness in 1934.

Her husband died in 1990.

Survivors include a son, Taze Stoops, Kerrville, Texas; two daughters, Saditha Marshall, Topeka, and Belva Jean Stoops, Elk Falls; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
