Ora Craven

OXFORD - Ora Mae Craven, 88, of Oxford, died June 20, 2001, at Riverview Manor.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oliver-Hawks Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Curtis Fike will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church Youth Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Craven was born Sept. 21, 1912, in Morgan, Texas, to Mary Emeline and James Thomas Crider. They settled in the Slate Creek area where she attended Green School until eighth grade. She began doing housework and cooking for the Peters and Donley families and cooked for threshing crews.

On Feb. 28, 1934, she married Russell Craven in Wellington. They lived on farms at Arkansas City, Geuda Springs and Oxford before settling in Oxford in 1953.

A homemaker, Craven also cooked at Riverview Manor and held other jobs.She raised her grandson, Donald Craven, and aided in raising Emma Ward's sons, David and Larry, after their mother's death.

Her husband died June 6, 1982.

Survivors include two sons, Russell Craven, Oxford, and James Craven, Dodge City; a daughter, Belva Parson, Oxford; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Betty Anderson

Betty Aline (McKay) Anderson, 82, of Winfield, died June 21, 2001, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Hillcrest Cemetery at Florence.

A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.

Anderson was born July 14, 1918, in Marion, to Clara Bell (Howe) and George Lane McKay. She was raised in Marion and graduated from Marion High School in 1936. She attended Emporia State College.

Anderson lived in various communities, including Eufala, Okla., Wichita and Winfield. While in Winfield she resided at Walnut Towers before moving to Good Samaritan Village.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Marion.

Survivors include three sons, George Stephen Anderson, Bluff City, Gene Anderson, Wichita, and Douglas McKay Anderson, Winfield; a daughter, Paula Claire Anderson, Wichita; and four grandchildren.

A daughter, Kristin Kay Anderson, preceded her in death.

Arlis Carr

WELLINGTON - Arlis B. Carr, 73, of Wellington, died June 21, 2001, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Frank Funeral Home. The Rev. Kendale D. Finley will officiate. Burial will be in Sumner Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and First Christian Church.

Carr was born April 11, 1928, in Wellington, to Nola (Underwood) and Frank M. Carr.

On Aug. 4, 1970, he married Dolores Backhaus in Wellington.

Carr was a retired car man with the Santa Fe Railroad.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, NARVRE and the Transportation Communications International Union.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores Carr, Wellington; and a sister, Aileen Butters, Winfield.

Katherine Milton

Services for Katherine C. Milton were held at 11 a.m. June 22, 2001, at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Jerre Nolte officiated. Burial was in Union-Graham Cemetery.

Special music was "Peace in the Valley" and "In the Garden."

Casket bearers were Dennis Burkett, Jeffrey Burkett, David Keasling and Jesse Sympson.

A memorial has been established with Westview Manor in Peabody.

Cecil Whaling

CEDAR VALE - Cecil Whaling, 88, of Cedar Vale, died June 23, 2001, at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Ozro Falls Cemetery near Hewins.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Whaling was born Sept. 8, 1912, in Hewins, to Esther (Call) and Charles L. Whaling. He was raised at Hulah, Okla.

In 1934 he married Clara Wilke. She died in 1985.

In 1994 he married Dolly Callaway. She died Dec. 24, 1998.

Whaling worked as an interior and exterior decorator in the Lyndon-Quenemo area and around Garden City. He retired and moved to Cedar Vale 16 years ago.

He had been at Pleasant Valley Manor for three weeks.

Survivors include a brother, Don Whaling, and a sister, Evaleen Houser, both of Copan, Okla.

Betty Anderson

Services for Betty Aline (McKay) Anderson were held at 10 a.m. June 23, 2001, at First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Fred Houston officiated. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery at Florence.

Special music was "Amazing Grace," "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Nadine Grant

ARKANSAS CITY - Nadine Joy Grant, 71, of Arkansas City, died June 22, 2001, at her residence.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery chapel. Jesse A. Kindred will officiate.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Grant was born March 10, 1930, in Arkansas City, to Merrell (Dorrough) and Benji W. Hicks. She was raised by Dove E. and Samuel L. Joy near Dexter and attended Dexter and Winfield schools.

On Dec. 22, 1946, she married James C. Grant with whom she owned and operated Grant Lumber in Arkansas City. She was the business secretary and a homemaker.

Grant was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include a son, Scott L. Grant, Caney; a daughter, Joy E. Grant, Danville, Calif.; two brothers, Bob Shuster, Escondido, Calif., and Merlyn Hicks, Arkansas City; a sister, Bennie Ann Hicks, Fredonia; and three grandchildren.

Richard Reynolds

WELLINGTON - Richard Lee Reynolds, 54, of Wellington, died June 20, 2001, at his home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Prairie Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at Frank Funeral Home from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Reynolds was born May 1, 1947, in Wellington, to Clara Virginia (Skinner) and Lawrence Fay Reynolds. He graduated from Wellington High School in 1965.

In 1970 he graduated from Emporia State University with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He also attended the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Chicago.

He began his career with Amoco Oil Co. in 1970 and held various sales, marketing and management positions. He retired from Amoco in 1992.

He moved back to Wellington in 1996.

Reynolds was featured in the 1975 Greater Kansas City's Successful Single Men publication. He received the Amoco Midwest Study Team Award and the Amoco Quality Action Team Award.

He was a member of the Black Achievers in Industry, Emporia State Alumni Association, Torch Club Alumni and National Association of Purchasing Agents. Reynolds had been a sponsor of Kansas City Special Olympics.

Survivors include his father, Lawrence Fay Reynolds, Winfield; two sisters, Betty Anderson, West Bloomfield, Mich., and Margaret Hurst, Arlington, Texas; and three brothers, Robert Reynolds, Merriam, Dr. Kenneth Reynolds, Lee's Summit, Mo., and Paul Reynolds, Winfield.

Larry Gilbert

DEXTER - Services for Lawrence R. "Larry" Gilbert were held at 2 p.m. June 20, 2001, at Dexter Christian Church. The Rev. Norman Reeves officiated.

Pat Muntz was the pianist. Reeves, Diane Reeves, Jessie Bradley and Lyn Killingsworth sang "How Great Thou Art," and the congregation sang "Amazing Grace."

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
