Kenneth Strother

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - Ret. U.S. Army Col. Kenneth C. Strother, 100, died June 30, 2001, in Santa Monica.

The funeral will be at Fort Myers, Va., and burial will be July 20 in Arlington National Cemetery.

Gates, Kingsley & Gates, Moeller, Murphy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Strother was born June 16, 1901, in Winfield. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1924.

Retiring from the Army in 1954, he moved to Santa Monica and began a second career with RAND.

His wife, Melba, died March 25, 2001.

Survivors include a daughter, Joanna S. Nicol, Falls Church, Va.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Peggy Rhine

BOULDER, Colo. - Peggy Ann Luck Rhine, 71, of Boulder, Colo., died of cancer July 6, 2001, at Boulder Community Hospital.

Services will be announced later.

Contributions may be made to the University of Colorado Foundation for Scholarships in Communications, P.O. Box 1140, Boulder, CO 80306.

Howe Mortuary of Boulder is in charge of arrangements.

Rhine was born June 20, 1930, in Fargo, N.D., to Frieda (Sandberg) and Loren A. Luck.

On Sept. 7, 1958, she married Robley D. Rhine in Boulder.

She graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in education. She attended Southwestern College for one summer.

She taught high school in Lake Crystal, Minn., Sheridan, Wyo., and Grays Harbor, Wash., and completed her master's degree in English at the University of Colorado.

In 1959 she joined the University of Colorado faculty and shortly after was appointed drama consultant to the elementary, junior and senior high schools of Colorado by the Colorado State Speech League. In 1971 she received the Larry Tajiri Memorial Award for outstanding accomplishment in the performing arts, in recognition of her work in the schools. She later became a senior instructor specializing in the oral interpretation of literature, speech for teachers, creative drama and intercultural communication. She retired in 1995 as senior instructor emeritus.

For 20 years she was a host to Japanese students in the International English Center. She was honored as the "go-between" at a Japanese wedding at the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo.

Survivors include her husband, Robley Rhine, Boulder; and a sister-in-law, Juanita Keasling, Arkansas City.

Shirley Artherton

WICHITA - Shirley Ann Artherton, 57, of Wichita, died July 9, 2001, at her home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Highland Cemetery in Winfield.

Friends may sign a condolence register at Miles Funeral Service.

A memorial has been established with the Rest Haven Activity Fund.

Artherton was born Jan. 15, 1944, in Jay, Okla., to Alta M. (Lackey) and Archie F. Morgan. When she was an infant, the family moved to Winfield where she was educated.

In 1960 she married Robert LeRoy Artherton in Arkansas City. In 1963 she moved to Citrus Heights, Calif., where she was a homemaker. In 1972 she returned to Winfield and became employed at Cessna.

In 1983 she began employment with Boeing in Wichita where she worked on Air Force One. She was currently an expediter of parts for the ABL laser plane and had received her Air Force One, ABL and NATO badges.

Survivors include a son, Darrin Wayne Artherton, Holy Springs, Miss.; two daughters, Vikki Leigh Prock, Monett, Mo., and Dawn Renee Hansen, Arkansas City; three brothers, Billy J. Morgan, Marvin L. Morgan and J.R. Morgan, all of Winfield; a sister, Treva J. Harrod, Winfield; and seven grandchildren.

Elizabeth Baker

LEAVENWORTH - Elizabeth A. Baker, 65, of Leavenworth, died July 5, 2001, at Kindred Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., after an extended illness.

Memorial services were July 9 at Wallula Christian Church, Leavenworth, with burial at Mount Muncie Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Wallula Christian Church, Downtown Kansas City Rotary Club and the American Diabetes Association.

Baker was born June 6, 1936, in Leavenworth to Mary and Harold Stuckey. She grew up on the family dairy farm and attended Delaware and Nine-Mile grade schools near Lansing and graduated from Lansing High School in 1954. She earned an associate's degree in business administration from Kansas City, Kan., Community College in 1988.

On May 12, 1957, she married A.E. Baker Jr. in Leavenworth. They made their first home on the Baker farm in Wyandotte County near Piper. After relocating several times following her husband's career to Nebraska, Virginia and Ohio, the family returned to Kansas in 1971.

Baker was a homemaker and worked in administrative support at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas State University and the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Division.

Future Farmers of America awarded her a National Farmers Award for service during the National FFA conventions in Kansas City.

In 1983 Baker accepted the position of executive director for the Downtown Kansas City Rotary Club. In this position, she traveled in support of numerous national and international Rotary conventions and was presented the Paul Harris Fellowship by Rotary. She retired in 1995 because of her health.

Baker was a 4-H leader and supporter. She was a lifetime member of the Wallula Christian Church and served as a choir member, youth sponsor, Sunday school teacher and deaconess of publicity. She was also an accomplished pianist and singer.

Survivors include her husband, A.E. Baker Jr., Leavenworth; two sons, Jon C. "Chris" Baker, Winfield, and Mark A. Baker, Pittsburg; a daughter, Karen L. Porter, Leavenworth; a sister, Barbara Gary, Culpeper, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Donald Lallman

Donald G. Lallman, 72, a resident of the Kansas Veterans Home at Winfield, died July 5, 2001, at his home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Udall Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.

Lallman was born Dec. 21, 1928, in Arkansas City, to Evelyn (Starkey) and Richard Lallman. As a young man he worked in the oil fields. He served in the military during the Korean War.

On Jan. 27, 1962, he married Dorothy Cook. She died in 1989.

Lallman worked for Missouri-Pacific Railways in Wichita and was later employed with Kansas Trucking in Wichita for a number of years. He resided in Udall until moving to Mission, Texas, in 1996 and returned to Winfield to reside at the Kansas Veterans Home in August 2000.

He was a member of the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of Mulvane.

Survivors include a son, Kenny Lallman, Topeka; a brother, Eugene Lallman, Texarkana, Texas; four sisters, Martha Stover, Ponca City, Margaret Thompson, Oklahoma City, Marilyn Wilson, Portland, Ore., and Marjorie Harman, Anchorage, Alaska; and one grandson.

Robert Finney

Services for Robert L. Finney were held at 10 a.m. July 9 in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Buddy Cook officiated. Finney was buried with military honors.

Music included "One Day at at Time," by Sandi Patti, and "Grandpa," by the Judds.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Kristine McCormick

ARKANSAS CITY - Kristine McCormick, 48, of Arkansas City, died July 7, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Cemetery in Winfield. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

McCormick was born Nov. 18, 1952, in Wichita, to Emma Miranda Louise (Pennett) and Glen Warren McCormick. She was raised in Wichita and educated at the Center of Hope.

In 1986 she moved to Focus Developmental Center in Winfield. She had recently resided at Twin Rivers-Windsor House in Arkansas City and was employed at Cowley County Developmental Services.

Survivors include a sister, Judy Higgins, Windsor, Pa., and a friend, Melinda Winegarner.

Leota Bolte

HARPER - Leota E. Bolte, 85, of Harper, formerly of Atlanta, died July 5, 2001, in Harper Hospital.

Services were 10:30 a.m. July 7 in the Harper United Methodist Church. The Rev. Phil Morris officiated. Burial was in Harper Cemetery.

Gail Pearl sang "Take My Hand, Precious Lord," and "When They Ring Those Golden Bells" and was accompanied by Bolte's great-niece, Sherry Camp. The taped selection, "He Came to Me," by Bolte's great-nephew David Camp, was also played.

Casket bearers were Bill Bolte, John Bolte, Kent Misak, Jason Misak, David Wilkey and Luke Wilkey. Cypress Chapter 255 Order of Eastern Star of Harper conducted an Eastern Star service.

Memorials may be made to the Harper United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society. Elliott Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Bolte was born Jan. 12, 1916, in Atlanta, to Arletha (Moss) and Melvin Gregory. She grew up in the Atlanta area and graduated from Atlanta High School.

On Sept. 12, 1934, she married Alonzo L. Bolte in Winfield. They made their home in Caldwell where she worked for the Hurst Flower Shop.

In 1965 she and her husband moved to Harper where she worked in the Newsum Flower Shop.

Bolte was an active member of the United Methodist Church and was past president of United Methodist Women. She was also a member of Cypress Chapter 255 Order of Eastern Star.

Her husband died Feb. 16, 1979.

Survivors include her daughter, Virginia Lee Misak, Wichita; a son, James G. Bolte, Oxford; her twin sister, Devota Crowley, and her sister, Tavis Call, both of Harper; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
