Mae Nimrod

DERBY - Mae I. Nimrod, 79, of Derby, died July 20, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita.

Services were at 11 a.m. today in Derby First Baptist Church. Burial was in El Paso Cemetery. Smith Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Derby First Baptist Church.

Nimrod was born July 18, 1922, in Hannibal, Mo., to Myrtle (Stovell) and Albert Gaskill.

On Aug. 2, 1940, she married Vinton E. Nimrod in Wichita.

Survivors include her husband, Vinton E. Nimrod, Derby; a son, Randy Nimrod, Albuquerque, N.M.; three daughters, LaVaun Anderson, Haysville, LaGene Akers, Owatonna, Minn., and Sandi Ford, Redmond, Wash.; a brother, Richard Gaskill, Wichita; a half-brother, Albert Gaskill, Detroit; a half-sister, Darlene Ryan, Georgia; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Eugene Bair

Eugene V. Bair, 66, of 10288 212th Road, Winfield, died July 20, 2001, at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Tulsa, Okla.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Military honors will be performed in Burden Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials have been established with the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Tulsa and the First Baptist Church in Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Bair was born March 2, 1935, in Arkansas City, to Anna (Wilkerson) and Ola E. Bair. He was raised and educated in the Burden and Dexter communities and graduated from Burden High School in 1952. He attended Emporia State College and was employed by Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita before entering the U.S. Army in 1956. He served as a clerk for a Nike missile company in New Jersey where he met his future bride. He received his military discharge in 1959.

On Feb. 21, 1959, he married Sarah F. Rule in Glassboro, N.J. For almost 25 years they made their home in Burden where he worked for McMinn Oil Co. He began his own business, Bair Oil Co., in 1961 and purchased the McMinn Oil Co. business in 1962. He continued to operate Bair Oil Co. until he sold the business in 1981 and worked in area oil fields for two years.

In 1984 Bair and his wife moved to Winfield where they established Bair Auto Glass. They operated the business for 16 years until retiring in March 2000. For the past year, Bair had worked as a school bus driver for USD 465.

A member of the First Baptist Church of Winfield, Bair was formerly affiliated with the Burden Masonic Lodge and the Kiwanis Club.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Bair, Winfield; a son, Mike Bair, West Jordan, Utah; three daughters, Teri Spengler, Winfield, Tracy Henderson, Manhattan, and Tonya Lojka, Olathe; two brothers, Homer Bair, Augusta, and Orville Bair, Burden; four sisters, Lenora Henderson, Winfield, Eula Mae Martin, Dexter, Vivian Shaver, Douglass, and Wanda Mackey, Burden; and seven grandchildren.

Dutch Stegelman

Services for Rollin Henry "Dutch" Stegelman were held at 10 a.m. July 23, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Jerre Nolte officiated.

Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery at Grenola. Winfield American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 provided military honors.

Laura Belle Haines was the organist. Les Hogue sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace."

Honorary casket bearers were Max Allison, Henry Bernard, Ted Biby, Jake Brennan, Frank Cummings, Darren Grow, G.L. Huntington, Ron Johnson, Bill McNeely, Darwin Newton, Bob Odell, Darryl Rising and Fred Satterthwaite.

Casket bearers were Rich Helsel, Doyle Allen Johnson, Paul Satterthwaite, Daniel Schmidt, Dustin Scott, Derek Stegelman, Jeff Stegelman and Woody Stitt.

Memorials have been established with Grace United Methodist Church, Grenola United Methodist Church, the Grenola Historical Society and Hospice Inc.

Doris Stegelman

Doris Ellena Stegelman, 74, of 915 E. Eighth, Winfield, died July 23, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Grenola.

Memorials have been established with Grace United Methodist Church, Grenola United Methodist Church, the Grenola Historical Society and Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Stegelman was born Dec. 23, 1926, on a farm near Grenola, to Elsie Mae (Wood) and Guy Ellsworth McClure. She was raised and educated in the Grenola community and graduated from Grenola High School in 1944. She later received a teaching certificate from Southwestern College.

On Dec. 22, 1946, she married Rollin Henry "Dutch" Stegelman in Winfield. They made their first home in Grenola.

Stegelman taught school in Elk and Greenwood counties from 1944 to 1947. She later worked at St. Mary's Hospital and Snyder Clinic and for Dr. William Barr in Winfield.

She received her associate's degree in nursing from St. John's College and in 1978 began work as a staff nurse at William Newton Hospital. She retired in 1989.

Stegelman was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and took part in the quilters circle there. She had served on the Cowley County Fair Auxiliary Board, as a Girl Scout leader in the 1950s and '60s, and as a volunteer for the Cowley County Historical Museum, Red Cross Bloodmobile and American Cancer Society.

Her husband died July 17, 2001.

Survivors include a son, Richard "Stan" Stegelman, Topeka; two daughters, Saundra Sue Schmidt, Shallow Water, and Linda Jo Scott, Topeka; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Wendell Utt

SILVERDALE - Wendell E. Utt, 80, of Silverdale, died July 21, 2001, at his home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Hawks Memorial Chapel in Arkansas City. The Rev. Kendall Utt will officiate. Burial will be in Belle Plaine Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions may be sent to the funeral home.

Utt was born Dec. 19, 1920, in Silverdale, to Effie Melinda (Harp) and Clarence Arthur Utt. He graduated from high school in Foraker, Okla.

For three years during World War II, he served in the Army.

After returning from the service in 1945, he married Betty Marie Rozell in Winfield. She died July 19, 1965.

In October 1989 he married Phyllis Jeanette Campbell Goatley in Wellington.

Utt retired from Boeing in 1984 after 35 years of service.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Belle Plaine and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Utt, Silverdale; three sons, Ronnie Utt, Jim Goatley and Howard Goatley, all of Arkansas City; a daughter, Lois Miller, Wellington; three brothers, Wayne Utt, Mulvane, Doyle Utt, Belle Plaine, and Wade Utt, Hemet, Calif.; a sister, Dora Howard, Ponca City; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Jerry Evans

Services for Jerry Lee Evans were held at 10 a.m. July 27, 2001, in the First Assembly of God Church. The Rev. Harold Gross officiated. Burial was in Blackwell Cemetery.

Music included "God and God Alone" and "Safely Home," performed by Mark Schale.

Honorary casket bearers were Henry Fetters and Clint Leonard. Casket bearers were Richard Alsip, Craig, David and John Canedy, Chris Fetters and James Hill.

Memorials have been established with the Meniere's Disease Foundation and the American Heart Association.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Finney

Services for Ruby E. Finney were held at 10 a.m. August 27, 2001, in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Buddy Cook officiated. Music was "The Old Rugged Cross."

Family members served as casket bearers.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lynn Saar

CHERRYVALE - Lynn Marie "Lynnie Pooh" Saar, 16, of Cherryvale, died July 29, 2001, at her home following a seizure.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Potts Chapel in Cherryvale. The Rev. Lex Fox will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Cherryvale.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and after 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Champ Shing for Epilepsy Children. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Lynn was born April 29, 1985, in Winfield, to Sherry (Barney) and Damon Saar. She had completed 10th grade at Cherryvale High School.

She had participated in Special Olympics and Camp Shing.

Survivors include her mother, Sherry Barney, Cherryvale; her father, Damon Saar, Winfield; and her grandparents, Carl and Sandra Hale, Cherryvale, and Bob and Della Saar, Winfield.

Nellie Taylor

Nellie Taylor, 95, of Winfield Rest Haven, died there July 29, 2001.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Cemetery.

Taylor was born Feb. 16, 1906, to Marion Adella (Cunningham) and Virgil Cary Taylor. She was raised in Cowley County and graduated from Winfield High School and business college.

For 25 years she worked as a dietary aide at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. In the 1970s she returned to Winfield where she was active in the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Alta Mae Boatman and Opal McConaghy, and a brother, Alfred Taylor, all of Winfield.
