Clora Nelms

Clora M. Nelms, 68, of 1416 Manning, Winfield, died Sept. 1, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.

Cremation has been effected, and a private memorial service was held.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.

Nelms was born May 7, 1933, in Maxwell, Okla., to Edna Gladys (McGuire) and David Ruthie Jones. She was raised and educated in Stratford, Okla., and graduated from Byars High School in 1951.

In June 1951 she married Junior Walden in Oklahoma. They moved to Wichita where she graduated from Wichita State University in 1956. The couple later divorced.

In 1963 Helms received a degree as a practical nurse and operated various nursing homes in the Wichita area. She was also employed at the veterans hospital.

In 1965 she married James Adcock in Wichita. They later divorced.

She moved to the Ada and Stratford, Okla., area in 1973 and received her certified medical assistant's degree in 1976 in Wynnewood, Okla.

On Feb. 3, 1977, she married Ralph L. Nelms in Gainesville, Texas. In 1996 she moved to Winfield to be closer to family. Her husband died July 21, 1997.

Nelms was a member of Hackney Community Baptist Church.

A son, Stephen Bruce Walden, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, James Adcock II, and a daughter, Ramona Rowley, both of Winfield; a sister, Augustine Keeling, Stratford, Okla., and five grandchildren.

Rhoda Whaley

DERBY - Rhoda Rose Zella Whaley, 81, of Derby, formerly of Wellington, died Sept. 4, 2001, at Westview Manor Nursing Home.

Services will be at 2 p.m Thursday in Highland Cemetery at Winfield. The Rev. Quentin Bennett will officiate.

Friends may call at Frank Funeral Home in Wellington from 5 to 9 tonight. The family will greet visitors from 6 to 7.

A memorial has been established with the Salvation Army.

Whaley was born Nov. 11, 1919, in Winfield, to Sarah (Mabry) and Oscar Davis.

On July 4, 1947, she married John Wesley Whaley in Van Buren, Ark. He died Jan. 25, 1971.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Royal Neighbors of America.

Survivors include two sons, Joe Whaley, Haysville, and Robert Webster, Wyoming; two daughters, Sarah Hanke, Waterville, and Roberta Donlan, Luray, Va.; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Carole Grant

Carole Sue Grant, 61, lifelong resident of Winfield, died Sept. 5, 2001, at her home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery north of Arkansas City.

A registration book can be signed at the funeral home until 9 tonight.

Memorials have been established with Hackney Community Baptist Church and Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Grant was born March 26, 1940, in Winfield, to Alice Nadine (Archer) and Vernon Fred Lumbert. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1958.

On Aug. 14, 1959, she married Jack Ray Grant at the First Baptist Church.

She worked as a secretary in the business office at Southwestern College and at the Cowley County Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service office as program assistant for several years. For the past 13 years, she served as a realtor and an associate broker at Webber Land Co.

Grant was a member of Hackney Community Baptist Church, a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International and a member of the Winfield Board of Realtors.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Grant, and two sons, Mark Clinton Grant and Michael Jay Grant, all of Winfield; a daughter, Julie Lynne Reece, Lawrence; her mother, Nadine Lumbert Peck, and two brothers, Phillip "Max" Lumbert and Howard Byron Lumbert, all of Winfield; and five grandchildren.

Irl Fife

Irl Junior Fife, 84, lifetime resident of Winfield, died Sept. 5, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery west of Winfield.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Friday. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9.

A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church or contributions can be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Fife was born May 31, 1917, in Winfield, to Cecil (Rogers) and Jacob Fife. He attended Floral grade school and graduated from Winfield High School in 1935.

During World War II, Fife served four years in the United States Air Force and attained the rank of master sergeant. Stationed in England, Fife received many military honors while serving as a crew chief on a B-24 nicknamed "Ramp Rooster." He was honorably discharged Nov. 1, 1945.

During his war service in England, he met his future bride, Ruth Barbara Brown. On March 17, 1945, they married at Leighton Buzzard, England. After the war, they made their home in Winfield.

In earlier years, Fife worked as a carpenter for Roy Vaughn. Later he worked for his grandfather at Winfield Nursery and subsequently owned and operated Winfield Nurseries as the family business. Until recently he served as gardener for Drs. Chandy and Shanthi Samuel and was a landscape designer.

For 49 years Fife was a member of the First Baptist Church where he taught the Friendship Sunday School Class. He was affiliated with American Legion Post 10, the Bluetick Breeders and Coonhunters Association and the National Rifle Association.

His wife died July 24, 1982.

Survivors include a son, Richard Fife, and a daughter, Ruth Ellen Parman, both of Winfield; two brothers, Thomas J. Fife, Winfield, and Roger Fife, Wichita; and three grandchildren.

Ruth Trenary

ARKANSAS CITY - Ruth May Trenary, 59, of Arkansas City, died Sept. 3, 2001, at her residence.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Hawks Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the Poppy Puppies in care of the American Legion Auxiliary Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Trenary was born Dec. 14, 1942, in Arkansas City, to Dorothy Isabell (Barton) and Isaac "Ike" Bowman. She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1961 and took several business classes at Cowley County Community College.

On Sept. 10, 1961, she married James Henry "Jim" Trenary.

She was a member of the American Legion Post 18 Auxiliary and served as unit second vice president, poppy chairperson and chairperson of the Friday Night Kitchen Unit. She was poppy chairperson and sergeant-at-arms for American Legion District 3 Auxiliary and a member of the Arkansas City Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Trenary, three sons, Jimmie, David and Greg Trenary, and three sisters, Margaret Hughes, Ida Brown and Charlene Bowman, all of Arkansas City; two brothers, Everett Bowman, Arkansas City, and Samuel Bowman, Lawrence; and five granddaughters.

Donna Childs

Donna Jean Childs, 52, of Winfield, died Sept. 6, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 8 to 9 a.m. Monday.

A memorial has been established with Creative Community Living.

Childs was born Nov. 20, 1948, in Magnolia, Ark., to Dolly (Nance) and William Childs.

She was a resident of Winfield State Hospital and Training Center until its closing. She then moved to Creative Community Living where she was known as "the Queen Bee."

Survivors include friends Peggy Nixon, Herb Evans, Karen Snell, Susan Slothower, Barbara Anderson, Leon Richey, Justin Gober, Kim Moore, Danielle Westermann, Mary Miller, Ethel Gates and Ray Clayton.

Odra Gardner

Odra Willis Gardner, 75, of 13530 75th Road, Winfield, died Sept. 6, 2001, at his home.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Military honors will be performed in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.

A memorial has been established with Hospice SCCS of Derby. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Gardner was born Nov. 16, 1925, in Maxville, to Blanche F. (Simmons) and Christopher R. Gardner. He was raised and educated in Honeywell. As a young man, he was employed at the Wakefield Ranch and at Southwest Ice Co.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific.

On Sept. 15, 1946, he married Barbara E. Priest at Hackney Community Baptist Church. They made their home on a farm north of Winfield. He built elevators for Chalmers & Borton Co. in Hutchinson from 1946 to 1950 when he began driving trucks for Gene Brown Trucking and Wakefield Trucking. In 1958 he began working as a truck mechanic for International Harvester Co. in Wichita. He also owned and operated Gardner's Bird Farm north of Winfield from 1973 to 1985. He retired from Copeland International in 1988.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Gardner, and a son, Jimmy A. Gardner, both of Winfield; three daughters, Carolyn Foster, Udall, Marilyn Powell, Rose Hill, and Donna Tuxhorn, Belle Plaine; a brother, Albert Gardner, Winfield; 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
