Eva Farley
ARKANSAS CITY - Eva Jane Farley, 79, of Arkansas City, died Sept. 7, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hawks Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorials have been established with the Children and Youth Program and American Legion baseball in care of the American Legion Auxiliary Fund.
Farley was born Aug. 15, 1922, in Dover, Okla., to Mattie Marie (Baldman) and John Amos Martin. She attended high school in Davis, Okla.
She married Earnest Shoup, and they later divorced.
On Feb. 15, 1964, she married Earl Farley in Arkansas City. He died Aug. 3, 1999.
Farley was a member of Shelton Beaty American Legion Post 18 Ladies Auxiliary and Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Ronnie Farley, Emporia, and David Farley, Wellington; four daughters, Betty Jones, Arkansas City, Geraldine Ringgold, Blackwell, Okla., Grace Carroll, El Dorado, and Nancy Thomas, Emporia; four brothers, Billy Ray Martin and George Martin, both of Ponca City, Jack Martin, Davis, Okla., and Jerry Martin, Calumet, Okla.; two sisters, Imogene Jolly, El Paso, Texas, and Marie Tigert, Davis, Okla.; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Thomas Walters
PRATT - Thomas James Walters, 76, of Pratt, died Sept. 9, 2001, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery
at Cullison.
Friends may call at Ayres-Calbeck Mortuary in Pratt from 5 to 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorials have been established with the Parkinson's Association, the First Christian Church and the American Heart Association.
Walters was born Aug. 28, 1925, in Cullison, to Flossie L. (Miller) and Horace R. Walters.
During the Korean War, he was a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was wounded in the Battle of Heartbreak Ridge for which he received the Purple Heart.
On Feb. 3, 1952, he married Laurene Weese in Wichita.
Walters retired from the U.S. Postal Service after more than 34 years of service.
He was a member of the First Christian Church and Elks Lodge 1451. He also was part of the original Pratt Area Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include his wife, Laurene Walters, Pratt; two sons, Tom Walters, Pratt, and Steve Walters, Winfield; a daughter, Bobbi Walters, Denver; and three grandchildren.
Eugene Wade
WICHITA - Eugene E. "Gene" Wade, 74, of Wichita, died Sept. 8, 2001.
The Rosary will be said at 7 tonight at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Cedar Vale Cemetery.
Wade was a retired jig builder for Boeing.
Survivors include a sister, Marjorie Sanburn, Wichita, and a sister-in-law, LaVonne Wade, Amarillo, Texas.
Ruth Trenary
ARKANSAS CITY - Services for Ruth May Trenary were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 7, 2001, in Hawks Memorial Chapel. Pastor Eugene McCarty officiated. Burial was in Parker Cemetery.
Music included "Beulah Land" and "Three Old Rusty Nails," recorded by the late Les Parks.
Honorary casket bearers were Trenary's nieces and nephews.
Casket bearers were Elgin Wahlborg, W.L. "Buddy" Allen, Terry Stephenson, Harold Green, Willie Brown and Bill Webb.
A memorial has been established with the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Puppy Fund.
Laverne Frye
OXFORD - Laverne C. Frye, 91, formerly of Udall and Arkansas City, died Sept. 8, 2001, at Riverview Manor in Oxford.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Udall Nazarene Church. Burial will be in Udall Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the Udall Nazarene Church Steeple Fund. Contributions may be made at the church or funeral home.
Frye was born Dec. 11, 1909, in Udall, to Alta R. (Smith) and Edgar B. Cook. She was raised in Udall and graduated from high school in 1927.
On March 19, 1932, she married Albert Frye in Newkirk. They lived on a farm near Dale before moving to Winfield in 1950. The Fryes moved to Oregon in 1958 and returned to Udall in 1968. In 1978 they moved to Arkansas City. Her husband died in 1989.
She moved to Udall in 1992 to be close to family and later moved to Riverview Manor due to failing health.
Frye was a member of the Udall Nazarene Church and a charter member of the Udall Co-Operettes Extension Unit and the Dale Club.
Survivors include her nieces, Phyllis Hopkins, Barbara Seaman, Joyce Brookings, Jewel Lacy and Linda Morton, all of Udall, and Caroline Miller, Alpine, Ariz., and a nephew, Ross Rennick, Mulvane.
Odra Gardner
Services for Odra Willis Gardner were held at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 10, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Raymond Hiltzman officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery
with military honors provided by American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544.
Music included recordings of "Wings of a Dove," by Ferlin Husky, "Daddy's Hands," by Holly Dunn, "Grandpa, Tell Me 'Bout the Good Ole Days," by The Judds, and "Go Rest High on That Mountain," by Vince Gill.
Honorary casket bearers were Carl Branch, Jon Jones, Steve Rising, Carl Shultz and John Wrenn.
Casket bearers were Joe Bruce, James Burnham, Jason Cuiksa, Nate Gardner, Scott Humphrey, Dusty Kilts, Randy Powell and Tony Stephens.
A memorial has been established with Hospice, SCCS, of Derby.
Clinton Bishop
BURDEN - Clinton R. "Ralph" Bishop, 76, of Burden, died Sept. 9, 2001, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Duncan, Okla., cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service Wednesday from noon to 9 p.m.
A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Bishop was born Dec. 7, 1924, in Waurika, Okla., to Sarah Cora (Hughes) and Everett M. Bishop. He attended school in Addington and Loco, Okla.
During his junior year in high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy. He served as a radioman third class aboard the USS Chester in the Pacific Fleet, Cruiser Division Five, during World War II. On April 17, 1946, he was honorably discharged. Among the numerous awards Bishop received were the Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon and a letter of commendation from Commander Allan E. Smith for the operations in Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Hiroshima.
After the war, he returned to Oklahoma City and trained as an operator for Western Union. In 1948 he transferred with the company to Chicago. Shortly after, he moved to Velma, Okla., to live on a ranch with J.W. and Dorothy Jones.
In 1956 he went to work for Rufus J. Green and Hubert Green. In 1963 he moved to Latham and was the ranch manager for the Rufus J. Green Ranch.
On Jan. 27, 1964, he married Mary Brown Wham in Wichita Falls, Texas. They lived on the Green ranch until his retirement in 1992.
Bishop was of the Baptist faith and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1192 in Duncan, Okla.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Bishop, and a son, Kyle Wham, both of Burden; a daughter, Judy Spencer, Duncan, Okla., a brother, Doyle Bishop, Corvallis, Ore., two sisters, Dorothy Jones, Duncan, Okla., and Bonnie Jeffers, Boring, Ore.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Devine Swisher
Services for Devine Harris Allen Swisher were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 11, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Jess Fisher officiated. Vocal music included "Arms Wide Open" and "I Hope You Dance."
Burial was in Dexter Cemetery.
Lester Hope
ARKANSAS CITY - Lester Eugene Hope, 72, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 19, 2001, at his home.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Hope's remains have been donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center for research.
Memorial contributions are requested to Hospice Care of Kansas, 800 Main Place, Winfield, KS 67156.
Hope was born Oct. 4, 1928, in Meriden, to Cora Mae (Miller) and Benjamin Leo Hope. He graduated from Rock Creek High School.
Hope served in the U.S. Air Force from October 1946 to October 1949.
On March 4, 1966, he married Twilla Lucille (Mulhern) Sadler in St. Joseph, Mo. She died June 7, 1999.
Hope was a truck driver for various companies, including DeCoudres Trucking.
Survivors include two daughters, Lynda Redman and Nancy Schroff, both of Arkansas City; a son, Harold "Ben" Sadler; two sisters, Laila Welbourne, Meriden, and Faith Moffitt, San Bernardino, Calif.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
