James McCaw
A vigil and Rosary service for James P. "Phil" McCaw Sr. was held at 7 p.m. Sept. 30, 2001, and a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 1, both at Holy Name Catholic Church. The Rev. Bernard Gorges officiated.
Greate Palsmeier was the organist, and Gemma Palsmeier was the vocalist. Lectors were Nancy Doll and Lisa Mash.
Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Name Catholic Church and the American Red Cross.
Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Vernon Snook
ARKANSAS CITY - Vernon Snook, 69, of Arkansas City, former longtime resident of Winfield, died Sept. 30, 2001, at Presbyterian Manor.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Arkansas City Assembly of God Church. Cremation has taken place.
A memorial has been established with the missions program at the church. Contributions may be made through the church or Miles Funeral Service.
Snook was born July 18, 1932, in Utica, Ill., to Irene Louise (Brooker) and Clifton Harvey Snook. The family moved to Winfield in 1935. He attended Country View rural school and graduated from Winfield High School in 1949. As a young man, he worked on area farms.
A veteran of the Korean War, Snook served with the U.S. Navy as a petty officer 2nd class.
In October 1953 he married Virginia Stone in Winfield. They later divorced.
Snook served as director of Winfield Area Emergency Ambulance Services at the hospital from 1966 to 1973. In 1973 he became assistant personnel director at Winfield State Hospital & Training Center. He retired in 1992.
During the mid-1980s he moved to Arkansas City. A member of the Arkansas City Assembly of God Church, Snook was active in church missions.
Survivors include a son, Craig Alan Snook, Springfield, Mo.; a daughter, Pamela Gayle Stonehocker, Fort Worth, Texas; two sisters, Shirley Grant, Winfield, and Marilyn Sheely, Ponca City; and three grandchildren.
Rickie Glen
ARKANSAS CITY - Services for Rickie Joel Glen were held at 11 a.m. Oct. 2, 2001, in Hawks Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Jackie Vogele officiated. Inurnment was in Hope Cemetery.
Music included recordings of "Life by the Drop," by Stevie Ray Vaughn, "Holes in the Floor of Heaven," by Steve Wariner, and "God Bless the U.S.A.," by Lee Greenwood.
Casket bearers were Billy Brumley, Brett Martin, Mike Doyle, Ricky Potter, Lonnie W. Glen III, Terry Salisbury, Chris Pinion and Brent Pinion.
A memorial has been established as the Kiley Jo Glen Education Fund.
Alice Moore
Alice A. Moore, 80, formerly of rural Burden, died Sept. 30, 2001, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Union-Graham Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorials have been established with the American Diabetes Association and the Good Samaritan Village Activities Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Moore was born Sept. 7, 1921, on a farm east of Maple City, to Ida Ellen (Meyers) and Daniel Rush. When she was two, the family moved to Winfield where she was raised and educated. A 1939 graduate of Winfield High School, Moore received training in pediatric nursing at Children's Hospital in Denver in 1941 and graduated from William Newton Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1942.
On Dec. 16, 1942, she married Loel F. Moore in Orange, Calif., where he was stationed in the military.
She was employed in nursing in Orange County, Calif., Nashville, Tenn., and San Luis Obispo, Calif., before returning to Winfield in 1948. Locally Moore worked as a laboratory nurse at the N.B. Fall Clinic for several years and later served as a nurse for Dr. R.B. White.
Moore and her husband moved to the Eaton community in 1954. She returned to nursing at William Newton Hospital in 1960 and retired in 1970. Her husband died April 6, 1998.
A longtime member of Tisdale United Methodist Church, Moore was affiliated with the Disabled American Veterans, the William Newton Memorial Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association and the American Association of Retired Persons. She was a longtime leader for Tisdale 4-H Club.
Survivors include a son, William Allen Moore, Geuda Springs; a daughter, Mary Jane Hopper, Phoenix; a sister, Bertha Hallman, Winfield; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Spencer Wallace
MESA, Ariz. - Spencer Wallace, 51, of Mesa, formerly of Winfield, died Sept. 26, 2001, at his home.
A memorial service will be held Friday in Mesa.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Wallace was a son of Anna Wallace of Winfield and the late Norman Wallace. He attended Winfield High School and Southwestern College and received his bachelor's degree in social work from Arizona State University in Tempe.
In addition to his mother, Wallace is survived by his wife, Wanda Wallace, and a son, Joshua Wallace, both of Mesa; a daughter, Charlene DeLuca, Portland, Ore.; a brother, Paul Wallace, Boston; two sisters, Norma Ciskowski, Udall, and Kelly Wallace, Portland, Ore.; and three grandchildren.
Carl Buell
Carl Owen Buell, 71, of Winfield, died Sept. 25, 2001, at Winfield Rest Haven.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Wilmot Cemetery. Cremation has taken place.
A memorial has been established with the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.
Buell was born July 14, 1930, in Burden, to Mr. and Mrs. Willis E. Buell. He graduated from Morrowville High School in northern Kansas in 1949.
A longtime resident of Burden and Wilmot, Buell worked for area farmers.
Survivors include two brothers, Homer Buell, Portland, Ore., and Harold Buell, Bronco, Texas; four sisters, Dorothy Brown, Winfield, Elsie Feeler, Clinton, Iowa, Jo Ann Rahn, Los Angeles, and Beulah Barnes, Kerrville, Texas; and his guardian, Cindy Flippo, Lawrence.
Virgil Trigg
CEDAR VALE - Virgil S. Trigg, 80, of Cedar Vale, died Oct. 2, 2001, at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Cedar Vale Cemetery.
Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Trigg was born Sept. 3, 1921, in Reed Springs, Mo., to Hattie (Epley) and Samuel Trigg. He was raised and educated in the Cedar Vale area.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1941 to 1945.
On Oct. 8, 1946, he married Maxine Bridges in Bartlesville.
He worked as a police officer in Cedar Vale and Sedan and as a contract oil field pumper in Bartlesville. He had been living in Cedar Vale since 1978.
Trigg had served on the Cedar Vale City Council and was a member of the Bartlesville Veterans of Foreign Wars post.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine Trigg, Cedar Vale; two daughters, Sandy Wood, Copan, Okla., and Cheryl Graves, Ponca City; a brother, Afton Trigg, Las Vegas; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Arwin Grant
JACKSON, Wyo. - Arwin Max Grant, 65, of Jackson, formerly of Winfield, died July 10, 2001, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, of injuries received in an automobile accident.
Grant was born in Winfield on Feb. 19, 1936, to Irene and Orville Grant. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1954.
Grant graduated from Northern Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley with a master's degree in geography and economics.
From 1960 to 1963 he served in the armed forces and spent one year in Korea.
Grant then returned to Greeley to teach school. He married Jo Ann Kondo in 1965, and they moved to Jackson in 1966.
In 1983 Grant married Laurie Ungefug.
Grant taught government and economics in the Teton County school system for 32 years before retiring in 1998. He was also a fly fishing guide at the Crescent H Ranch for 35 years.
Survivors include his wife, Laurie Grant, two daughters, Jessica Paige Grant and Julie Kathleen Grant, and a son, John Christopher Grant.
Kristin Thudium
WICHITA - Kristin "Kris" Thudium, 42, of Wichita, former Whittier Elementary School teacher in Winfield, died Oct. 2, 2001.
Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday and at the service at 10:30 a.m. Friday, both at Downing & Lahey Mortuary, 10515 W. Maple.
Memorials have been established with the Sedgwick County Zoo, 5555 W. Zoo Blvd., Wichita, KS 67212, and Literary Resources, 412 S. Main, Wichita, KS 67202.
Survivors include her parents, Gary and Marcia Thudium, and a brother, Shawn Thudium, all of Wichita; three sisters, Kimberly Shank, Wichita, Renee Sweetwood, Tulsa, and Andrea Dettke, Loveland, Colo.; and her grandmother, Braden Carvutto, Bettendorf, Iowa.
