Mabel Burdette

GRENOLA - Mabel Ruby Burdette, 97, longtime resident of Grenola, died Oct. 3, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Grenola United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5 to 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the Grenola United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Burdette was born April 7, 1904, in Elk County, to Emma Esta (Underwood) and Peter David French. When she was seven years old, the family moved to a farm in Chautauqua County. She attended Shiloh Rural School. As a young girl, she helped with farm chores. In her early 20s, before she married, she helped build the family home.

On Nov. 23, 1924, she married Clarence Franklin Burdette in Grenola, and they made their home on a farm in Chautauqua County. Her husband died Dec. 10, 1981. In 1986 her home burned, so she moved to Grenola where she lived for 10 years. She then moved to Arkansas City so her daughters could care for her.

A homemaker, Burdette was a member of the Grenola United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Pleasant Valley Home Demonstration Unit.

Survivors include her daughters, Doris L. Brentlinger, Arkansas City, and DeLoris L. Groene, rural Winfield; a son, Darrell D. Burdette, Chautauqua County; a sister, Ethel L. Wilmeth, Mulvane; 10 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Floyd Horton

ATLANTA - Floyd Edward Horton, 30, of Atlanta, died Oct. 2, 2001, in Atlanta.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Atlanta Christian Church. Burial will be in Atlanta Cemetery.

Friends may call at Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc., 313 S. Market, Wichita, and Ronald McDonald House, 520 N. Rutan, Wichita.

Horton was born Sept. 9, 1971, in El Dorado, to Pat (Berner) and Tom Horton. He was raised in Atlanta, attended grade school in Cambridge and Atlanta and graduated from Central High School in 1990. He attended Cowley County Community College for a year.

Horton was a member of the Atlanta Christian Church, North American Rifle Club, North American Fishing and Hunting Club and National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his parents, Tom and Pat Horton, and a brother, Tom Horton II, all of Atlanta; and two sisters, Tammy Braden and Carol Ann Archer, both of Winfield.

Leona Davis

ROCK PORT, Mo. - Leona E. (Smith) Davis, 95, homemaker, of Rock Port, died Oct. 2, 2001, at Bergan Mercy Care Center in Omaha, Neb.

Services were at 1 p.m. Oct. 5 at First Lutheran Church in Rock Port. Pastor Bill Terry officiated. Burial was in Hunter Cemetery. Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rock Port Nutrition Center, First Lutheran Church of Rock Port and Alegent Hospice Care of Omaha.

Smith was born April 30, 1906, in Langdon, Mo., to Grace (Cooper) and Siebelt Smith. She attended Cooper Country School in Langdon and then worked on the family farm.

On Nov. 29, 1924, she married Theodore William "Ted" Davis in Rock Port. They lived and farmed in the Langdon area and in 1943 moved into Rock Port. Her husband died May 4, 1996.

A daughter, Dorthy Schomburg, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Donal Davis, Grand Island, Neb.; seven daughters, Evelyn Brusha and Esther Perry, both of Rock Port, Lois Douglass, Columbia, Mo., Eva Tupa, Lincoln, Neb., Anna Clark, Belton, Mo., Sonna Lane, Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Helen McPherson, Rock; 24 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and 14 stepgrandchildren.

Clara Bever

WAUNETA - Services for Clara May Bever were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 3, 2001, in Round Mound Cemetery at Wauneta. The Rev. Jerry Bever officiated, and the Countyline Singers provided music.

Casket bearers were David, Dennis, Tracy and Charles Bever and Loyd and Larry Kennedy.

Memorials have been established with the Wauneta United Methodist Church and Sedan hospital.

Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale was in charge of arrangements.

Alice Moore

Services for Alice A. (Rush) Moore were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 4, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. David Lemke officiated. Burial was in Union-Graham Cemetery.

Music included "Whispering Hope" and "God Will Take Care of You."

Honorary casket bearers were Leland Edgar Davison, Kenneth Hallman, Ellis Hunt, Walter Lucas, Dean Moore, Paul Parsons, Clifford Serviss and Percy Wilson.

Casket bearers were Loel Bohannon, Harry Hallman, Rick Hopper, Chad Moore, Joe Rush and Ralph Rush.

Memorials have been established with the American Diabetes Association and the Good Samaritan Village Activities Fund.

Howard Hale

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Howard I. Hale, 90, a longtime Palo Alto resident, died Oct. 1, 2001, after a brief illness.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Menlo Park Chapel of Spangler Mortuaries, 650 Live Oak Ave., Menlo Park, CA 94025.

Hale was born in 1910 in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School. In the 1930s he was an amateur boxer and an officer with the Winfield Police Department, attaining the rank of sergeant.

In 1937 he married Blanche Cleo Mills. She died in 1981.

After World War II began, Hale enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

After holding various jobs in Wyoming and Colorado, Hale and his wife moved to Palo Alto in 1951. He was employed as a security official for United Airlines until his retirement in 1972.

Hale was a life member of the National Rifle Association and the Humane Society of America. He was also a member of the Palo Alto Elks Lodge.

He leaves no survivors.

Ruby Johnson

KEMP, Texas - Ruby C. Johnson, 92, of Kemp, died Oct. 3, 2001, at a Kemp nursing center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday.

Johnson was born Sept. 4, 1909, in Cedar Vale, to Louise (Edwards) and Eugene F. Champlin. She was raised and educated in the Cedar Vale area.

She married Lawrence Johnson who died in 1974.

For many years she was co-owner of OK Tire Welders in Arkansas City.

A member of the Cedar Vale United Methodist Church, Johnson was active in the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society, the Chamber of Commerce, Republican Women and the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Zella Venn

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Mo. - Zella Phyllis Venn, 84, of Mountain View, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 3, 2001, at a nursing home in Willow Springs, Mo.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. today. The family will greet friends from 7 to 8.

Memorials have been established with the Alzheimer's Disease Research Foundation and the National Parkinson Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Venn was born Nov. 4, 1916, in Trail City, S.D., to Charlotte (Hanson) and Charles Elmer Huff. The family moved to Arkansas City when she was five years old. She was educated in Arkansas City and Rock and helped on the family farm.

On April 14, 1936, she married Harvey Noble Venn in Newkirk. They made their first home in Nash, Okla., and in 1944 moved to a farm southeast of Winfield.

In the late 1940s Venn began working at the Seymour Packing Plant. Then she worked as a cook at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center from 1949 until retiring in 1969.

Her husband died Dec. 26, 1976.

She was a member of the Millington Street Baptist Church.

Survivors include her sons, Harvey D. Venn, Dexter, Charles W. Venn, Mountain View, Mo., Curtis E. Venn, Willow Springs, Mo., Jerry N. Venn, Winfield, Dennis E. Venn, Arkansas, and Jack H. Venn, Blackwell, Okla.; two daughters, Phyllis Morris, Mountain View, Mo., and Kathy Moody, Brashear, Texas; a brother, Kenneth Huff, Winfield; 42 grandchildren, 81 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mabel Burdette

Services for Mabel Ruby Burdette were held at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 5 in the Grenola United Methodist Church. The Rev. Don Foster officiated. Burial was in Green Lawn Cemetery.

Dale Steward sang "Amazing Grace" and "Blessed Assurance."

Honorary casket bearers were Burdette's granddaughters, Paula Dill, Linda Ellis and Debbie Roths.

Casket bearers were Burdette's grandsons, Eric Brentlinger, David Burdette, Dwight Burdette, Nelson Burdette, Randy Groene, Jay Groene and Kirk Groene.

A memorial has been established with the Grenola United Methodist Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
