Vernon Snook

Services for Vernon Snook were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 5 in the First Assembly of God Church in Arkansas City. The Rev. James Newman officiated.

Jay Anderson was the music leader; Linda Haslet, the pianist, and Nancy Barnes, the organist. Music included "He Lives," "The Solid Rock" and "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name."

A memorial has been established with the missions programs of the First Assembly of God Church of Arkansas City.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Phillip Smith

GEUDA SPRINGS - Phillip Mac Smith, 54, of rural Geuda Springs, died Oct. 7, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, after being injured at work on Oct. 3, 2001.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Oxford First Baptist Church. The Revs. Curtis Fike and K.B. Murray will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at Oxford Funeral Service, LLC, on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with the Rhonda Smith Scholarship Fund. Contributions may be made at the funeral home.

Smith was born May 23, 1947, in Wellington, to Geneva (Craven) and Leonard A. Smith. He was raised in the Geuda Springs area and attended Flora Dale school until the eighth grade and Geuda Springs High School for one year. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1965 and attended Cowley College for one year following graduation.

Smith farmed southwest of Oxford and retired from GEC (now BAE) in Wellington after about 25 years of service. Since his retirement in the mid-1990s, he had been employed at the Winfield Livestock Auction.

A daughter, Rhonda Smith, died in 1987.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Smith, and a son, Mike Smith, both of rural Geuda Springs; his mother, Geneva Taylor, Winfield; a brother, Brad Smith, El Dorado; and a stepbrother, Dan Taylor, Belle Plaine.

Imo Jean Carter

SEDAN - Imo Jean Carter, 79, of Sedan, died Oct. 5, 2001.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale. Burial will be in Moline Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.

Memorials may be made to the Belknap Community Center, Route 10, Sedan, KS 67361, or Hospice Equipment, 313 S. Market, Wichita, KS 67202.

Carter was born Sept. 5, 1922, near Wauneta, to Ollie (Burdette) and James Elliott. She was educated in area schools and attended Pittsburg State College.

On Oct. 16, 1943, she married John Carter in Wichita. They lived in Wichita, Kansas City, Mo., Tulsa, Okla., and Bella Vista, Ark., before retiring to Sedan in 1981.

A homemaker, Carter was also a teacher and a real estate broker. She was a member of the Sedan Baptist Church, the Christian Women's Fellowship, the Eagle Forum, farm extension and Questors.

Survivors include her husband, John Carter, Sedan; a son, Mitchell Carter, Wichita; a daughter, Linda Heath, Kansas City, Kan.; two sisters, Charlotte Elliott, Cedar Vale, and Irene Oakes, Arcadia, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

LaVina Nichols

LaVina E. Nichols, 78, of 2 Lakepark Drive, Winfield, died Oct. 6, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to the Kansas Lung Association and the William Newton Hospital Auxiliary.

Nichols was born Oct. 19, 1922, in Medford, Okla., to Teresa (Shultz) and Edward Schneider. When she was a child, the family moved to Belle Plaine where she was raised and educated.

On Nov. 19, 1948, she married Wayward Nichols at his mother's home. Joe Riley Burns officiated.

Nichols worked for Dillons for many years and later for the K-O Warehouse. She retired in 1989.

She was a longtime member and past president of Business and Professional Women and a member of the William Newton Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Wayward Nichols, Winfield, and a sister, Leola Thomas, Hutchinson.

Lowell Totten

WICHITA - Lowell J. Totten, 83, of Wichita, died Oct. 6, 2001.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Culbertson-Smith Mortuary. Burial will be in Mulvane Cemetery.

Totten was born Nov. 9, 1917, in Oxford, to Mabel (Justus) and Glenn Totten.

During World War II, he achieved the rank of master sergeant in the U.S. Army.

A Disabled Veterans of America chaplain and Veterans Administration volunteer, he amassed 12,000 hours of volunteer service in 10 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Carlson, Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Zola Gottlob, Winfield; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Audine Vestal

LONGTON - Dorothy Audine Vestal, 77, longtime resident of Longton, died Oct. 4, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Independence.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. The Rev. Ted D. Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Longton Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Vestal was born April 3, 1924, in Independence, to Emma Belle (Revis) and Alfred Fischer. She attended school at Sycamore, north of Independence.

On Aug. 2, 1941 she married John Dee Vestal in Sedan. They made their home on a farm south of Longton for 20 years and then lived east of Longton before moving into town. A homemaker, Vestal was known as "Mother Bear" to her family and friends.

After her marriage ended on Aug. 13, 1965, she became employed as a grade-A dairy tester throughout southeastern Kansas. In the mid-1970s she became owner-operator of the Longton Liquor Store and retired from the business in the mid-1980s.

Survivors include a son, Jack Vestal, Longton; three daughters, Dorothy Jay, Burden, Joyce Edwards, Longton, and Bonnie Bijak, Houston, Texas; a brother, Wilford Fischer, Belle Plaine; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Floyd Horton

ATLANTA - Services for Floyd Edward Horton were held at 10 a.m. Oct. 6, 2001, at the Atlanta Christian Church. The Rev. Doug Dorris and Chaplain Tom Davis officiated, and Dick Holverson delivered the eulogy. Burial was in Atlanta Cemetery.

Katherine Grow was the organist and vocalist for "Peace in the Valley." "Angels Among Us," by Alabama, was also played.

Honorary casket bearers were Susan Couch, Vickie Holverson, Becky Holverson, Dawn Heady and Kristy Ball.

Casket bearers were Mike Chattam, Jason Skinner, Mark Firebaugh, Steve Mackey, Steve Knight, Daniel Shepler and Jerry "Bear" Qualls.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Inc., 313 S. Market, Wichita, KS 67202, or Ronald McDonald House, 520 N. Rutan, Wichita, KS 67208.

Dunsford Funeral Home of El Dorado was in charge of arrangements.

Zella Venn

Services for Zella Phyllis Venn were held at 11 a.m. Oct. 6, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. K.B. Murray officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Lynn Merritt, accompanied by Kay Perdaris, sang "The Great Speckled Bird," "Amazing Grace" and "In the Garden."

Honorary casket bearers were Alvin, Buckie and Kerry Corter, Bobby and Sam Moody, and Chris, Ed, Harvey, Mike, Nick and Wayne Venn.

Casket bearers were Venn's grandsons, Andrew, Charlie, James, Jasen, Jeffrey and Todd Venn.

Memorials have been established with the Alzheimer's Disease Research Foundation and the National Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

Imo Jean Carter

CEDAR VALE - Services for Imo Jean Carter were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 9, 2001, at Wheeler Funeral Home. The Rev. Dois Nix officiated. Burial was in Moline Cemetery.

Mary Allison and Lowell Harp were the vocalists, and Shirley Brown was the organist.

Honorary casket bearers were Delbert McCallister and Alfred Burdett.

Casket bearers were Mitchell Carter, Craig Pritchard, Jack and Andrew Heath, and Howard and Bert Hawkins.

LeRoy Woods

Carl LeRoy Woods, 57, of 707 E. Eighth, Winfield, died Oct. 18, 2001, following an extended illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.

A memorial has been established with Winfield Isle of Lights. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Woods was born June 19, 1944, in Modesto, Calif., to Ruth L. (Allen) and Loyd Woods. In 1950 the family moved to Winfield. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1962.

As a young man he was employed at Albertson's Grocery Store and later at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita.

On June 5, 1964, he married Connie Bunch at the First Baptist Church. They built their home on East Eighth in the 1960s, and Wood began working for the City of Winfield in 1969. He served as power plant operator, as boiler fireman and in plant maintenance at the Winfield Electric Plant for 30 years until retiring in June 1999.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Woods, a daughter, Christina Pingry, a son, Greg Woods, and his mother, Ruth Woods, all of Winfield; and three grandchildren.
