Mary Gillis

Mary Dolores Gillis, 79, homemaker, of Winfield, died Oct. 18, 2001, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Gillis was born Nov. 17, 1921, in Hutchinson. Her father was Darrell Lytle. When she was a child, the family moved to Winfield where she attended schools, including Winfield High School.

On Oct. 30, 1940, she married Harold Gillis in Wellington. He died Jan. 10, 1970.

Survivors include four daughters, Helen Jordan and Debbie McKinley, both of Winfield, Ann Lawrence, Oxford, and Betty Miller, Jasper, Texas; a son, John Gillis, Arkansas City; a sister, Maurine Spalinger, Sylmar, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Ada Wilt

Services for Ada C. Wilt were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 19 in the Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Burial was in Dexter Cemetery.

The Rev. Norman and Diana Reeves sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "In the Garden." Pat Muntz was the accompanist.

Casket bearers were Jason Beehler, Brad Crow, Aaron Killingsworth, Stacey Lewis, Andy Mackey, Wayne Marcy, Roger Muse and Alan Perry.

Memorials have been established with the American Diabetes association and the American Heart Association.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Cloy Brazle

CEDAR VALE - Cloy William Brazle, 98, of Cedar Vale, died Oct. 20, 2001, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Cedar Vale Church of Christ. Burial will be in Round Mound Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Brazle was born Dec. 23, 1902, at Shell Knob, Mo., to Delvy (Epperly) and William Brazle. He grew up near Shell Knob.

After teaching at Rock Creek School from 1922 to 1923, he married Retha Margaret Cottrell on June 10, 1923. They spent a short time at Webb City, Okla., where Brazle worked in the oil fields, then moved to a farm south of Niotaze. Brazle worked for several farmers near Otto, then in 1936 bought a farm 11 miles northeast of Cedar Vale in the Round Mound community.

In 1948 they moved to Cedar Vale where Brazle sold insurance and real estate until 1982. During those years, he also operated a service station and later a grocery store and frequently served as an auctioneer.

Brazle was a member of the Cedar Vale Church of Christ and served on Chautauqua County's draft board for 20 years. For many years, Brazle was the Cedar Vale correspondent for the Winfield Daily Courier. "Ol' Cloy," a compilation of Brazle's memories and stories and memories of him written by family members, was published by his granddaughter, Marilyn Muller, in 1992.

Brazle's wife died in 1978. A son, Robert Waldo Brazle, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, William Clinton Brazle, Bozeman, Mont.; a brother, Clarence Brazle, Winfield; a sister, Dorothy McIntire, St. John; six grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Ethel Evinger

ARKANSAS CITY- Ethel Mae Evinger, 83, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 20, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Springside Cemetery.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established with Camp Horizon. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Evinger was born June 5, 1918, in Pratt, to Fanny Mabel (Correll) and Roy Dodd Bales. She was raised and educated in Pratt, Winfield and Wichita and graduated from Wichita East High School in 1939.

On March 3, 1939, she married Floyd Raymond Evinger in Kay County, Okla., and they made their home in Arkansas City. He died in 1978.

Evinger worked as a clerk at the F.W. Woolworth store for several years. She later graduated from beauty college and owned and operated the DeLite Beauty Shop from 1957 to 1995.

Evinger was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church and was active in United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Kansas State Board of Cosmetology. She was in the Arkansas City Women's Bowling Association and served as secretary and president. She also worked with the Organ Donor Program of Cowley County, attending fairs and workshops to promote organ donations.

A son, Bob Evinger, died in 1991.

Survivors include a son, Don R. Evinger, Arkansas City; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Rosannabelle Pappin

SEDAN - Rosannabelle Pappin, 101, died Oct. 20, 2001, at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Greenlawn Cemetery at Sedan.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Pappin was born Aug. 24, 1900, near Chandler, Okla., to Myrtle (Sutton) and Jonathan Parker.

On July 2, 1923, she married Jules Pappin in Oklahoma. He died in 1976.

Pappin had lived the past 40 years around Elgin and before that in Copan, Okla. She worked as a rural school teacher, then completed a business school degree and worked several years as comptroller for Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville, Okla.

Pappin was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Elgin United Methodist Church.

Survivors include four nephews, George Root, Wilson, John Root, Elgin, Terry Parker, Bartlesville, and Curtis Parker, Peru; and three nieces, Wanda Kincaid, Aberdeen, S.D., Trudy Seybert, Copan, and Christie Jarboe, Corpus Christi, Texas.

Char Harvey

Services for Charlotte "Char" Harvey were held at 10 a.m. Oct. 24, 2001, at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield and at 4 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in McPherson. Bishop Fritz Mutti and the Revs. Terry Turner, Allen Polen and Michael Marion officiated. Burial was in McPherson City Cemetery.

Laurabelle Haines was the organist in Winfield, and Ty Kaufman played the bagpipe in McPherson. Hymns included "For All the Saints," "Hymn of Promise" and "Because He Lives."

Casket bearers were Charles Rupp, Don Harvey, Jason Regier, Mark Dotzour, Jim Godbey and Jim Akins.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Marcia Booth

WICHITA - Marcia B. Booth, 98, of Wichita, former Winfield resident, died Oct. 22, 2001, at Homestead Health Care in Wichita.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Prairie Homestead Chapel in Wichita. Burial will be in the Lakeview Mausoleum. Lakeview Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Booth was born Oct. 22, 1903, in Colwich, to Hattie B. (Rogers) and Ernest Barnett.

A homemaker, Booth was a member of the Methodist Church. She was the widow of Charles O. Booth.

Survivors include a sister, Susie Johnston, Orange, Calif., nephews and nieces.

Gary Hizar

DODGE CITY - Gary Lee Hizar, 55, of Dodge City, died Oct. 25, 2001, at Trinity Manor in Dodge City.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Highland Cemetery at Winfield. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 8 to 9 prior to the funeral.

A memorial has been established with Trinity Manor in Dodge City. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Hizar was born Aug. 18, 1946, in Wichita, to Amelia (Schoenecker) and Charles Hizar. He was raised and educated in Wichita.

On April 27, 1979, he married Bonita Duckett in Wichita. They had made their home in Dodge City for the past 22 years.

Hizar had been employed as a rendering supervisor at National Beef for 16 years, worked at Excel for six years, and for the last few weeks had worked at the Right Co-op, all of Dodge City.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Boot Hill Ringers and a bowling league.

Survivors include his wife, Bonita Hizar, Dodge City; a son, Randy Hizar, Emporia; a daughter, Holly French, Reading; two stepsons, David Duckett, Wichita, and Patrick Duckett, Dodge City; his mother and stepfather, Amelia and Jack Boucher, Burden; a sister, Kay Pruitt, Wichita; three half-brothers, Dale Boucher and Jon Boucher, both of Burden, and Jack Boucher, Wichita; a half-sister, Kathy VanZelden, Wichita; and nine grandchildren.

Everett Crismas

HOWARD - Everett Harold Crismas, 94, of Howard, died Oct. 26, 2001, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. Scott Hawley will officiate, and Crismas's grandchildren will give the eulogies. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard.

Memorials have been established with the Howard Church of Christ and the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Crismas was born Jan. 22, 1907, on a farm northeast of Howard in Elk County to Ciphfronia Elnora (Myers) and Clinton Everett Crismas. He attended rural Elk County schools and graduated from Howard High School on May 21, 1926.

On Feb. 16, 1928, he married Lydia Lucille Richards in Fredonia. They lived northeast of Howard for many years before moving to a farm east of Severy. Crismas was employed at the locker plant and grocery stores in Severy for several years. He was also employed in the construction of the Fall River dam in the early 1950s.

Crismas and his wife owned and operated Midway Grocery Store in Severy and farmed in the Severy area during that time. In 1954 they moved to Erie where they owned and operated the Crismas Grocery Store for 32 years. They retired in 1986.

They had lived in Howard since October 1987 and marked their 73rd wedding anniversary in February 2001. His wife died on March 8, 2001.

Crismas attended the Howard Church of Christ. He was known for growing cane and producing sorghum from his cane crop.

A son, Robert Crismas, died on Feb. 13, 2001.

Survivors include a son, Richard Crismas, Springfield, Mo.; three daughters, Shirley Wunderlich, Piedmont, and Melba George and Linda Crismas, both of Wichita; a sister, Sylvia Carson, El Paso, Texas; 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
