Mary Duncan

Mary J. Miller Duncan, 79, of the Kansas Veterans Home at Winfield, died Oct. 30, 2001, in Wichita.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services and burial will be held at a later time in Grand Prairie, Texas. Baker Funeral Home of Valley Center is in charge of arrangements.

Duncan was born June 17, 1922, in Ringling, Okla., to Cleora (Dees) and Euwell Miller.

A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, she served 1944-1945.

She married Ray Duncan who preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Franchot Duncan, Derby; a daughter, Retha Barrientos, Dallas, Texas; two brothers, Coy Miller, Liberal, and Bill Miller, Edmond, Okla.; a sister, Betty Schneider, Petaluma, Calif.; five grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Marguerite Klingenberg

Marguerite Klingenberg, 82, of Good Samaritan Village, Winfield, died Oct. 28, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Arkansas City.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 8 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church.

Klingenberg was born Dec. 25, 1918, in Long Island, to Esther (Mosley) and Homer W. Mousley. She graduated from LeRoy High School and took business courses at a school in Manhattan.

On Aug. 24, 1941, she married Elmo M. Klingenberg in LeRoy. He died on April 23, 1991.

A homemaker, she also worked as executive secretary for the Cowley County Farm Bureau for 21 years before retiring in 1981.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Order of Eastern Star, the Ruth Circle and Rosseta Circle.

Survivors include a son, Gary Klingenberg, Fort Myers, Fla.; two daughters, Norma Klingenberg and Terry Rhodes, both of Winfield; and five grandchildren.

Miriam Hudson

Miriam A. Hudson, 79, longtime Winfield resident, formerly of Grenola, died Oct. 31, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

A Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Miles Funeral Service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Military honors will be in Grenola Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials have been established with Holy Name Catholic Church and St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Hudson was born June 6, 1922, in Pawtucket, R.I., to Edith Mary (O'Donnell) and Charles Horley Dawson. She was raised in Providence, R.I., where she attended Tyler Parochial School. As a young woman, she worked as a hostess and cashier in restaurants and hotels.

During World War II, she served in the Women's Army Corps. as an intelligence liaison assistant and was discharged as a corporal.

She met her future husband at Mariana Army Air Field near Tucson, Ariz. On Feb. 26, 1945, she married William H. Hudson at Camp Howze in Gainesville, Texas, and they made their first home in Grenola.

Following her husband's death, Hudson resided in Topeka and Wichita where she worked as a hotel receptionist and later for Twin Lakes Bank. After moving to Tulsa, she was employed as a reservationist for the Gaslight Dinner Theatre in Broken Arrow.

When she returned to Winfield, Hudson worked as a salesperson at Study's Ladies Wear and later served as checkout supervisor at Winfield Wal-Mart until retiring in 1986. For 10 years she had been employed as hostess and receptionist at Miles Funeral Service.

A member of Holy Name Catholic Church, she was also a member of American Legion Post 10 for over 20 years. She held offices as post chaplain and first vice commander before serving as the post's first woman commander from 1985 to 1986.

Survivors include a son, William R. Hudson, Holt, Mo.; a brother, Malcolm T. Brown, Jamestown, R.I.; two sisters, Edith M. Church and Margaret Lombardi, both of Johnston, R.I.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Lloyd Hankins

GROVE, Okla. - Lloyd B. "Hank" Hankins, 93, of Grove, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 31, 2001, at Betty Ann Nursing Center.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ellis Family Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be later in Highland Cemetery at Winfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Betty Ann Nursing Center Activity Department, P.O. Box 450547, Grove, OK 74345.

Hankins was born July 9, 1908, in Boynton, Okla., to Belle and Riley Hankins. When he was two, the family moved to Winfield. After graduating from high school, he worked for the City of Winfield for 42 years.

On March 23, 1933, he married LaVerna Hinkley in Wellington. She died in 1989.

Hankins had been a member of the Lions Club, the First Presbyterian Church, Happy Sam's Camping Club and several other camping clubs in the Winfield area.

Survivors include a son, Lee B. Hankins, Hattiesburg, Miss.; three grandsons and three great-grandchildren.

Marguerite Klingenberg

Services for Marguerite E. Klingenberg were held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 1, 2001, at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. James M. McIntosh Jr. officiated. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery near Arkansas City.

Marilyn Buffum was the organist. Music included "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art."

Honorary casket bearers were David R. and Bret Klingenberg, Troy Rhodes, Lawrence Miller and Ernie Harris.

Casket bearers were Gary Holloway and Kenneth Husted.

A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Tilda Sawyer

Tilda V. Sawyer, 100, of Winfield, died Oct. 31, 2001, at Cumbernauld Village.

Memorial services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. Inurnment will take place later in Floral Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church.

Sawyer was born March 5, 1901, in Floral, to Rose Ella (Yarbrough) and Robert Hart. She attended local schools and graduated from Winfield High School.

In 1921 she married Roy Sawyer. He died June 1, 1959.

Sawyer was a bookkeeper and office manager for Colorado Engraving Co. in Pueblo, Colo. She returned to the Winfield area in 1990.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Mehl, Bradenton, Fla.; a sister, Ada Dicken, Chapman; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Walter Askins

Services for George Walter Askins were held at 2 p.m. Nov. 2, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Tom Davis officiated.

Music included recordings of "Go Rest High on That Mountain," by Vince Gill, "Amazing Grace," by LeAnn Rimes, "Wind Beneath My Wings," by Bette Midler, and "Daddy's Hands," by Holly Dunn.

Private inurnment services will be held later in Cambridge Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. of Wichita.

Peggy Fridley

ARKANSAS CITY - Services for Margaret J. "Peggy" Fridley were held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 2, 2001, in Hawks Memorial Chapel. Brother Jesse Kindred officiated. Burial was in Parker Cemetery.

Music included recordings of "How Great Thou Art" and "Shall We Gather at the River," sung by Tennessee Ernie Ford.

Casket bearers were Bill Munley, Bob Uden, Mel Zemen, Duane Stone, Darrell Roland and Clyde Hatcher.

Memorials have been established with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the United Service Organizations.

Viola Graham

ROSE HILL - Viola T. Graham, 91, longtime Cowley County resident, died Nov. 2, 2001, at Lakepoint Nursing Center in Rose Hill.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Monday. The family will greet friends from 7 to 9.

A memorial has been established with Maude Carpenter Children's Home and the In Search of the Lord's Way program of the Church of Christ. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Graham was born Nov. 18, 1909, in rural Atlanta, to Tilda Clemens (Tinsley) and John Calvin Dwyer. She was raised and educated in Cowley County.

On Jan. 18, 1931, she married Lonnie I. Knowles in Winfield. They made their home in the Winfield area. She was employed at Southwestern College, Good Samaritan Village and Winfield Rest Haven as a housekeeper until her retirement. Her husband died June 4, 1975.

On Oct. 15, 1977, she married Walter Graham. They made their home in Winfield. He died Aug. 10, 1978.

She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Two sons preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Lola M. Longley, McLoud, Okla., and Rose Marie Kennedy, Atlanta; a son, Donald W. Knowles, Rose Hill; a stepson, Delbert Graham, Winfield; three stepdaughters, Alene Miller, Winfield, and Carolene Newlin and Irene Coby, both of Texas; a brother, Emery H. Dwyer, La Puente, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, 17 stepgrandchildren, 36 stepgreat-grandchildren and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
