Marcella Roberts

WICHITA - Marcella Stewart Roberts, 76, of Wichita, homemaker and commercial real estate appraiser, died Nov. 1, 2001.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel, 6555 E. Central. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Oxford Cemetery.

Roberts was born Oct. 19, 1925, in Winfield, to Jessie (Reece) and Ray Montgomery Stewart. She graduated from Winfield High School. At the University of Kansas she studied journalism and served as managing editor of The Daily Kansan, the university newspaper, her senior year. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa when she graduated.

Her first job was in New York with Conde Naste Publications as assistant to the travel editor of Glamour magazine. She returned to Kansas to an editorial position on the Beech Log.

After marrying John Melton Roberts on June 4, 1950, she taught English and journalism at Southwestern College and English at Mount Carmel in Wichita.

She earned a master's degree in urban affairs from Wichita State University. For many years, she was associated with The Martens Companies as a commercial real estate appraiser.

Roberts was a member of Chapter FY of P.E.O., the Martha Loving Ferrell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and American Penwomen.

Survivors include her husband, John Roberts, Wichita; two sons, J. Stewart Roberts, Carlisle, Mass., and Richard M. Roberts, Wichita; a sister, Virginia M. Stewart, Wichita; and three grandchildren.

Bessie Hughes

HOWARD - Bessie Faye Hughes, 93, formerly of Fall River, died Nov. 1, 2001, at Howard Twilight Manor.

Services were at 2 p.m. today at Fall River Christian Church. Pastor Bruce Ernt officiated. Burial was in Mount Zion Cemetery west of Fall River.

Memorials have been established with the Fall River Christian Church and Hospice Inc. of Wichita. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Hughes was born Feb. 18, 1908, in Alhambra, Ill., to Ella (Oluie) and William Wall. After graduating from high school in Edwardsville, Ill., she completed normal training and taught school in Illinois for 10 years.

On May 2, 1936, she married George Wesley "G.W." Hughes in Walshville, Ill. A homemaker, she worked with her husband operating the family farm near Fall River. They retired from farming in 1976 and moved to Howard Twilight Manor in 1994. Her husband died Dec. 11, 1994.

Hughes was a longtime member of the Fall River Christian Church and the Christian Women's Fellowship. She was a 50-year member of Chapter 173 Order of Eastern Star in Toronto and had also been a member of an Extension Homemaker Unit.

Survivors include five sons, Lee Hughes, Chandler, Texas, Paul Hughes and Dennis Hughes, both of Fall River, Lynn Hughes, Charlotte, N.C., and Kenneth Hughes, Howard; eight grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, 11-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Tilda Sawyer

Services for Tilda V. Sawyer were held at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 3, 2001, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Dennis Cochran officiated. Music included "Victory in Jesus" and "He Touched Me."

Burial will be later in Floral Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church.

Lela Moore

ARKANSAS CITY - Lela Mildred Moore, 95, formerly of Sedan, died Nov. 3, 2001, at Presbyterian Manor in Arkansas City.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Grand Prairie Cemetery north of Burden.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with Presbyterian Manor. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Moore was born July 31, 1906, on a farm near Burden, to Nellie (Boyd) and James W. Gardner. She was raised and educated in Burden.

On Aug. 14, 1924, she married Marion S. Moore in Winfield. They made their home on a farm near Burden until 1943, then moved to a farm near Eureka. There she worked in a restaurant. In 1962 they moved to Sedan where she worked as a hospital cook. Her husband died May 28, 1994.

Moore was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sedan.

Survivors include a son, Glen Moore, Dodge City; a daughter, Juanita Lazelle, Arkansas City; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Frank Miller

Walter Francis "Frank" Miller, 88, of Winfield, died Nov. 4, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Tisdale Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 this evening. The family will greet friends from 7 to 9.

Memorials have been established with Tisdale United Methodist Church and Lifeline at William Newton Hospital. Contribution may be made through the church or funeral home.

Miller was born Nov. 15, 1912, at Tisdale, to Walter Francis and Mabel Eleanor (Bevins) Miller. He attended Winfield schools. As a young man, he operated the family farm.

On Dec. 26, 1940, he married Kathryn Sandborn in Winfield.

Miller farmed for most of his life. He was also employed at Smith & Moon and then General Electric before retiring in the early 1970s. After retirement, the couple traveled to 48 states, Canada and Mexico.

Miller was a member of Tisdale United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Winfield; his daughters, Patricia Jo Born, Wichita, Nancy Horst, Winfield, F. Kathleen Allan, Crestwood, Ill., and Martha Allan, Seminole, Fla.; his sister, Ada Sontag, Latham; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Orville Coppenbarger

ARKANSAS CITY - Orville Camdon Coppenbarger, 94, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 4, 2001, at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Rev. Buddy Cook will officiate. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Kansas Veterans Home and the Church of the Nazarene in Arkansas City.

Coppenbarger was born Jan. 27, 1907, in Geuda Springs, to Charles and Agnus (Seanor) Coppenbarger. He attended school at Geuda Springs, Bresee Nazarene School in Hutchinson, Kansas State University, Cowley County Community College and Philippine University in Manila.

On June 1, 1935, he married Roberta M. Ford in Arkansas City. They later divorced.

On July 3, 1969, he married Helen McBurnett in Wichita.

Coppenbarger worked for Stearmen, Travel Air Co. and Beech Aircraft. He served in the Army Air Corps in China and the Philippine Islands. He received his private pilot's license in 1929 and during World War II was commander of the Beech Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol.

He was employed as a welder at Beech Aircraft for 37 years before his retirement in 1973.

Coppenbarger was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, the board of directors of Beech Credit Union and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local No. 733.

Orville was preceded in death by his wife.

Survivors include his daughters, Jeannette Reeves, Summerville, S.C., and Karen J. Pappan, Winfield; two stepsons, Mike McBurnett, Hanover, Ind., and Randy McBurnett, Houston; five grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Miriam Hudson

Services for Miriam Ann Hudson were held at 10 a.m. Nov. 5, 2001, at Holy Name Catholic Church. The Rev. Bernard Gorges officiated.

"Ave Maria" and "The Lord's Prayer" were performed by Shirley Walker, and Grete Palsmeier was the organist.

Casket bearers were Larry Gann, Jim Hahn, Robert Kent and Eric, Michael, Kevin and David Parsons.

Committal ceremonies were conducted in Greenlawn Cemetery at Grenola by American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544, both of Winfield.

Memorials have been established with St. Jude Children's Hospital and Holy Name Catholic Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Doris Klingman

GALESBURG, Ill. - Doris L. Klingman, 86, of Galesburg, died Oct. 31, 2001.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery under the direction of Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.

Memorials have been established with the First Presbyterian Church and the Knox College History Department.

Klingman was born June 29, 1915, in Mulvane, to Eva (Kincaid) and George Bloomenshine. She graduated from Mulvane High School in 1933, attended Friends University and graduated from Knox College in 1970.

On April 18, 1939, she married Creston S. Klingman in Wichita. They moved to Galesburg in 1952. She was a homemaker and earlier taught in country schools in Kansas.

Klingman was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, AN Chapter of P.E.O. and Galesburg Study Group.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Barry Klingman, Waco, Texas; a sister, Viola Teubner, Winfield; and three grandchildren.
