Edith Morton

Edith M. Morton, 89, of Cumbernauld Village, Winfield, died Nov. 10, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 7 this evening.

A memorial has been established with the First Presbyterian Church.

Morton was born June 21, 1912, in Moline to Earnest and Ella Horn. She was raised and educated in the Moline area.

On Feb. 21, 1941, she married Ellis Morton in Winfield. They moved to Winfield in the 1940s. He died July 27, 1998.

Morton had been a waitress.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a brother, Frank Horn, Ames, Iowa, nieces and nephews.

Mitchell Musson

ARKANSAS CITY - Mitchell D. Musson, 46, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 10, 2001, of injuries received in a motor vehicle accident.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home with the Rev. Lance Carrithers officiating. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Humane Society.

Musson was born May 17, 1955, in Arkansas City, to Justin "Jim" and Maxine (Copeland) Musson. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1973.

He and his wife, Rita, were married Nov. 25, 1987, in Arkansas City. They lived in Arkansas City.

Musson was an inspector for General Electric for 15 years.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Musson, Arkansas City; two daughters, Jamie Musson, Norman, Okla., and Marcy Kendrick, Arkansas City; his father, Jim Musson, Arkansas City; five brothers, Gary Musson, Wichita, and Jimmie, Jeff, Steve and Mike Musson, all of Arkansas City; and three grandchildren.

Wilbur Thornton

LAKESIDE, Calif. - Wilbur Lee "Willie" Thornton, 82, of Lakeside, formerly of Winfield, died Nov. 5, 2001.

No service is planned as he dedicated his remains to research.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Joe Thornton Youth Scholarship Fund, the American Heart Association or any charity.

Thornton was born Oct. 19, 1919, in Gordon, to William Bert and Carrie (Anderson) Thornton. Thornton was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1937. He attended Southwestern College before moving to San Diego in 1941.

On May 14, 1945, he married Marjorie Nichols, and they resided in San Diego.

Thornton was employed as a technical writer for CONVAIR Corp. during World War II. Through the 1950s he was involved in real estate development in the San Diego area. In 1960 he began working for the California Transportation Department and was a real estate right-of-way agent. He retired after working for Cal Trans for 22 years.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Thornton, and a son, Dana Thornton, both of Lakeside; a daughter, Terry Gleim, Santee, Calif.; a sister, Marilyn Johnson, and a brother, Bill Thornton, both of Winfield; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Dorcas Lunceford

ARKANSAS CITY - Dorcas Elsie Lunceford, 81, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 11, 2001, at Medicalodge East.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Newkirk City Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Medicalodge East.

Lunceford was born Aug. 21, 1920, in Uncas, Okla., to George Edmon and Martha Alice (Simpson) Bain.

On July 4, 1944, she married James W. Lunceford in Newkirk. The couple lived in Georgia before settling in Arkansas City.

Lunceford was a homemaker and member of Shelton Beaty Post 18 of the American Legion.

Survivors include a son, Edward Franklin Judd, Wichita; two daughters, Sharon Olmstead, Winfield, and Debra Paton, Arkansas City; a sister, Ethyl Carlyle, Bolivar, Mo.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Chansanouk Sengchan

LAWRENCE - Chansanouk Sengchan, 20, formerly of Winfield, died Nov. 9, 2001, in Lawrence of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Buddhist ceremonies will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Christian services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Miles, with Buddhist interment rites to follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from noon to 9 p.m.

A memorial has been established with the Winfield High School Athletic Department. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Sengchan was born April 13, 1981, in Vientiane, Laos, to Sawat and Nang (Inthivong) Sengchan. At age three, he moved with his family to the United States and settled in Wichita.

In 1985, the family moved to Winfield where Sengchan was raised and graduated from Winfield High School in 1999. He was active in the WHS soccer program.

Sengchan was currently a second-year student at the University of Kansas.

Survivors include his parents, Winfield; two brothers, Somsanit Sengchan and Souksalat Sengchan, both of Lawrence; a sister, Manath Xaysavat, Winfield; and his grandparents, Baokong and Nang Nod Inthivong, Laos.

Susie Vargas

Susanna Loraine "Susie" Vargas, 75, a lifelong Winfield resident, died Nov. 11, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

A rosary service will be at 7 this evening at Miles Funeral Service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 7 this evening.

A memorial has been established with the Multiple Sclerosis Association's Kansas chapter.

Vargas was born April 22, 1926, in Winfield to Francisco and Margarita (Barron) Acosta. She attended Winfield schools and was employed in local restaurants and by Winfield Laundry.

In 1947, she married Cruz Vargas in Winfield. They later divorced.

Vargas was a longtime employee of Winfield State Hospital and Training Center until retiring in 1986.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include five sons, Paul and Richard Vargas, both of Wellington, Tommy and Mike Vargas, both of Winfield, and Carlos Vargas, Arkansas City; two daughters, Mary Green and Nina Smith, both of Winfield; her mother, Margarita Tapia, Winfield; seven brothers, David Martinez, Lawrence Acosta and Tony, Johnny, Jimmy, Alfred and Edward Tapia; six sisters, Lupe Underkoffer, Berniece Tapia, Mary Chavez, Elisha DeLozier, Lucille Reyes and Ruby Rios; 24 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Stella Pickens

WESLACO, Texas - Stella L. Pickens, 94, of Weslaco, formerly of Burden, died Nov. 10, 2001, at Knapp Hospital in Weslaco.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Burden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Wheeler Funeral Home, Burden.

Memorial contributions can be made to any charity.

Pickens was born July 21, 1907, in Baja, Puerto Rico, to Frederick and Maria (Sestro) Libby. She was raised in Melrose, Mass., where she graduated from high school before attending Boston University.

On Aug. 11, 1956, she married Charles Pickens in Lubbock, Texas.

Pickens was employed by Puerto Rico's education department from 1930 to 1942. She later lived in locations around the world as her husband was a pipefitter for a major oil company. They retired and settled in Weslaco about 25 years ago.

Pickens was a former member of the Burden Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband; a brother, Henry C. Libby, Midland, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Wilbur Stone

RAYMORE, Mo. - Wilbur Lee Stone, 89, of Raymore, formerly of Douglass, died Oct. 26, 2001, at Foxwood Springs Living Center in Raymore.

He bequeathed his body to the University of Kansas for medical research and teaching.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Foxwood Springs Living Center.

The family suggests contributions to the Fellowship of John at Foxwood Springs Living Center.

Stone was born Oct. 29, 1912, near Douglass to Harry and Fern Stone. He graduated from Douglass High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Pittsburg State University and a master's degree in education administration from the University of Minnesota.

Stone taught elementary, secondary and junior college classes in El Dorado and Des Moines, Iowa. During World War II he was a regional ground school supervisor with the Civilian Pilot Training Program of the Civil Aeronautics Administration.

Stone was retired from Trans World Airlines where for 30 years he had held industrial relations positions.

He had been a member of the Douglass Christian Church, Country Club Christian Church, Kansas City, Mo., and Raymore Christian Church.

In recent years Stone served as an alderman and mayor for the city of Raymore. He also served on the board of the Research Belton Hospital Foundation and was a member of the Raymore Lions Club and the Raymore Chamber of Commerce.

On June 1, 1935, he married Gladys Lucille Jamison in Parsons. She and their son, Dr. Duane Stone, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his sister, Gida E. Perisho, Raymore, and his friend, Mary L. Barton, both of Raymore; nieces and nephews.
