Hazel Mitchell

ARKANSAS CITY - Hazel Laverne Mitchell, 88, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 15, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Cremation has been effected. Private services will be held. Oxford Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mitchell was born March 13, 1913, in Arkansas City, to Tessie Belle (Nelson) and George Grover Bacastow. She was raised in East Bolton Township and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1931.

Shortly after graduating, she moved to Wichita and worked for J.C. Penney. She later transferred to California where she continued to work for J.C. Penney. She lived in San Bernardino, Calif., for 40 years and was a longtime clerk at Sage Grocery.

She returned to Arkansas City in 1994.

Her husband, Whitey Mitchell, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her brother, Albert Bacastow Sr., Arkansas City; nieces and nephews.

Naomi Shively

BURDEN - Services for Naomi Ruth Shively were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 14, 2001, in Burden Cemetery. The Rev. Curtis Fike officiated.

Honorary casket bearers were Chanea, Chris, Colton, Jacob, Patrick, Sam and Stan Sawyer and Francis Jowers.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Care of Kansas and the Angel Tree Children's Fund in Winfield.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Kerry Knapp

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Kerry Knapp, 57, of Fairbanks, formerly of Oxford, died Dec 7, 2001, at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital following a stroke .

A memorial service was held Dec. 13 in the Chapel of Chimes in Fairbanks. The Rev. Jim Hayes officiated.

Donations to help defray medical expenses may be sent to Jeanne Marks, P.O. Box 74124, Fairbanks, AK 99707, or contributions may be sent to a charity of the donor's choice.

Knapp was born Oct. 3, 1944, in Oxford, to Julia Irene (Kemp) and Kenneth Corey Knapp. After graduating from Winfield High School in 1962, he worked as a roughneck in the oil fields.

During the Vietnam War, Knapp worked as a civilian in Vietnam for Lockheed. Over the years, he co-owned a commercial painting company, built travel trailers, tended bar and worked as a purchasing agent for a steel manufacturing business and as a general manager for several used car businesses and a tire business.

He later leased mining claims in Alaska and moved there from Colorado in 1988.

In November 1990 he married Jeanne Marks. In their business, Knapp-Ko of Alaska, in Fox, Alaska, they bought and sold heavy industrial, oil field and mining equipment.

Knapp was a member of the Fairbanks Racing Lions.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Marks, Fairbanks; two daughters, JoLea Coon, Winfield, and Carol Marks, Fairbanks; three sons, Michael Knapp, Fairbanks, Sean Knapp, Bartlesville, and Denim Jentzen, Derby; a brother, Donald Wayne Knapp, Tucson, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.

Carl Burnett

ARKANSAS CITY - Services for Carl Odell Burnett were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 17, 2001, in Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City. Richard Coldwell officiated.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family to help with expenses.

Hawks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Angela Biddle

Services for Angela Marie Biddle were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 17, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Bob Massey officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Music included recordings of "Lullaby," performed by Creed, "Angel," by Sarah McLachlan, "You Light Up My Life," by LeAnn Rimes, and "How Great Thou Art."

Honorary casket bearers were Derek and Josh Biddle, Dave Hurlbut, Darryl Johnson, John Rawson and Delbert and Tony Wacker.

Casket bearers were Brian, Chris, Jeremy and Tyson Biddle, Dan Defore and Todd Massey.

A memorial has been established as an education trust fund for Biddle's children.

Dori Cooper

LITTLETON, Colo. - Dorothy Jane "Dori" Cooper, 50, homemaker and certified public accountant, of Littleton, formerly of Caldwell, died Nov. 27, 2001, at Swedish Hospital in Denver.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Corbin United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be in Corzine Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Corbin United Methodist Church, c/o the Rev. Jan McDaniel, 100 W. Central, Caldwell, KS 67022; and the Littleton United Methodist Church, Dori Cooper Memorial Fund, 5894 S. Datura, Littleton, CO 80120.

Cooper was born Dec. 22, 1950, in Caldwell, to Verna (Hess) and Beryl J. Evans. She attended Corbin Grade School and graduated from Caldwell High School in 1968. In 1972 she graduated from Southwestern College with honors with a degree in elementary education.

On May 29, 1971, she married Wilt Cooper at Corbin. In 1973 they moved to New Jersey where she earned her Master of Business Administration degree from Rutgers University. She then worked for Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co.

In 1978 she and her husband moved to Littleton where she became controller for Circle T Drilling Co. in Denver.

After the birth of their children, she was a homemaker and kept books for various companies from her home. She also taught accounting at Arapahoe Community College for several years.

Cooper was a member of Littleton United Methodist Church where she was the treasurer for many years and a member of the choir, bell choir and Sunday school. She was also a member of the Main Street Players, Littleton Chorale, American Sewing Guild and Ridge Runners Square Dance Club. She was active in Girl Scouts and involved with the Collegiate Academy Charter School.

Survivors include her husband, Wilt Cooper, and daughters, Carissa Cooper and Darcy Cooper, all of Littleton; her mother, Verna Evans, Cumbernauld Village, Winfield; and two sisters, Mary Lou Holcomb, Lawrence, and Elaine Clark, Wellington.

Everett King

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Everett James King, 97, of Colorado Springs, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 14, 2001.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Dec. 17 at Central Church of the Nazarene in Colorado Springs.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Central Church of the Nazarene, 2550 E. San Miguel, or the American Cancer Society, 1445 N. Union Boulevard, B100, Colorado Springs, CO 80909.

King was born Sept. 26, 1904, in Winfield, to Elsie (Wright) and J. Erbie King.

On May 1, 1923, he married Helen J. Simpson. She preceded him in death.

King was a photographer in Colorado Springs for 53 years before he retired.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Hall and Wilnetta "Billie" Jarvis; two sisters, Alice Jones and Olive Hegebush; a brother, Lawrence King; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Junior Bratton

EUREKA - Donald James Bratton Jr., 73, longtime resident of Eureka, died Dec. 13, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services were at 2 p.m. Dec. 17 at Christ Lutheran Church. The Rev. Jeff Ungs officiated. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2712 provided military honors.

Casket bearers were Jeff and Tim Bratton, Dan, Doug and Sam Milner and Alan Pitkin.

A memorial was established with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Kansas, P.O. Box 3116, Wichita, KS 67201. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Bratton was born March 6, 1928, in Harrison, Ark., to Ethel Beulah (Dees) and Donald James Bratton. He was raised in Eureka and graduated from Eureka High School in 1947.

During the Korean War he served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army. He then worked for Phillips Petroleum before becoming a business advisor for Firestone Tire Co. He operated the Lincoln-Mercury dealership in Eureka for a few years and later operated a restaurant.

On Oct. 1, 1955, he married Carol LaVonne Brown in Eureka. The marriage later ended.

In 1959 he opened the Bi-Rite Variety Store which he owned and operated for more than 30 years. He also owned and operated the Rite-Bi Variety Store in Yates Center. In 1992 he retired.

Bratton was a past president of the Eureka Chamber of Commerce and served on the Eureka City Commission. He also served on the board of directors and was a past president of Variety Distributors. He was a member of Eureka Country Club and attended Christ Lutheran Church.

Survivors include a son, Andrew Bratton, Eureka; a daughter, Lisa Middleton, Miami, Fla.; his mother, Ethel Bratton, Eureka; three brothers, Phillip Bratton and Ronald Bratton, both of Eureka, and David Bratton, Canada; three sisters, Mickey Marshall, Yates Center, Phyllis Milner, Eureka, and Linda Pitkin, Midland, Texas; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jane Jarvis

Jane Jarvis, lifelong resident of Winfield, died Dec. 14, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be private. Friends may sign a register from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

The family has requested memorial contributions to the First Presbyterian Church, 1101 Millington, Winfield, KS 67156, and William Newton Hospital, 1305 E. Fifth, Winfield, KS 67156.

Jarvis was born in Winfield to Lola Belle (Staley) and Willard Richardson.

On Sept. 2, 1934, she married Richard L. Jarvis in Kansas City, Mo. He died April 13, 1998.

Jarvis was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Sarah Johnston, Prairie Village, and Barbara Dunn, Kansas City, Mo.; two grandchildren and one stepgrandchild.
