Robert Gordon

COPELAND - Robert Spencer Gordon Sr., 81, of Copeland, died Dec. 19, 2001, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 21 at the Copeland United Methodist Church. Burial was in Copeland Cemetery. Montezuma Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Gordon was born Sept. 17, 1920, in Atlanta, to Etta Isophene (Hindman) and Clyde Marion Gordon. He was educated in Cedar Vale schools.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as an ambulance driver in Italy.

On Oct. 20, 1946, he married Ellen Fay Hensley in Yates Center.

After farming for 19 years in eastern Kansas, Gordon and his family moved to Copeland where he was employed at Sublette Feeders feedlot until his retirement. He had lived at Bethel Home in Montezuma since 1991 after suffering a stroke in 1990.

Gordon was a member of the Copeland United Methodist Church,Veterans of Foreign Wars in Dodge City and American Legion in Copeland.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Fay Gordon, Copeland; two sons, Robert Spencer Gordon Jr., Copeland, and Daniel Ray Gordon, Howard; two daughters, Crystal Ellen Spanier, Howard, Colo., and Cherisse Elaine Jantz, Copeland; a brother, E.C. "Bill" Gordon, Owasso, Okla.; two sisters, Iola Pettigrew, Dexter, and Gladys Kerr, Winfield; two stepsisters, Marion Langius, Dallas, and Carolyn Marietta, Quechee, Vt.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Steven Rose

NEW YORK - Steven Kent Rose, 51, of New York City, formerly of Winfield and Wichita, died Dec. 25, 2001, at his father's home in Iola.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Iola. The Rev. John C. Thompson will officiate. Cremation has taken place. Burial will be private. Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established as a scholarship at Southwestern College.

Rose was born Aug. 31, 1950, in Liberal, to Lois J. (Means) and the Rev. Dean Rose. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1968 and from Southwestern College in 1972.

He taught math for a year at Oxford High School before continuing his education at Wichita State University. There he received a degree in computer science and accounting. He also attended the University of Missouri at Rolla.

For over 23 years Rose worked for Metropolitan Life in Wichita. For the past 17 years, he had worked at Metropolitan's home office in New York.

He was active in New York's John Street United Methodist Church. At the time of his death, he was church treasurer, on the pastor-parish committee and the board of trustees and was the church's delegate to the New York Annual Conference.

Survivors include his father, the Rev. Dean Rose, Iola; a brother, Fred Rose, Lihue, Hawaii; and a sister, Sheryl Berg, Iola.

Tommy Bowlby

DODGE CITY - Tommy E. Bowlby, 54, former longtime resident of Winfield, died Dec. 25, 2001, at Western Plains Medical Center in Dodge City.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 tonight.

Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association and the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Bowlby was born Sept. 2, 1947, in Winfield, to Mabel Lorene (Wilson) and Jack O. Bowlby. He was raised and educated in Winfield. As a young man, he worked in a local furniture store.

On Feb. 14, 1970, he married Jackie Jolene Shaffer in Winfield where they made their home. Bowlby worked as a custodian at Southwestern College for about 10 years, as a custodian at Lowell Elementary School and as a maintenance man at William Newton Hospital. For about three years he worked at Skyline Corp. in Arkansas City. At the time of his death, he was a receiving clerk at Gibson's Discount Stores.

He was a member of the Millington Street Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jackie Bowlby, Dodge City; a son, Jeremy Todd Bowlby, Winfield; his parents, Jack and Mabel Bowlby, Winfield; a brother, Jack L. Bowlby, Belle Plaine; a sister, Velma L. Howell, Nampa, Idaho; and one grandchild.

Wilma Wood

Wilma J. Wood, 85, of 716 N. Tweed, Winfield, died Dec. 26, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Christian Church. Cremation has taken place.

A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church. Contributions may be made at the church or Miles Funeral Service.

Wood was born Aug. 16, 1916, in Winfield, to Vera E. (Sandstrum) and William James Darst. She was raised in Dexter and graduated from Dexter High School in 1934.

In 1938 she graduated from Emporia State Teachers College and taught school in the Mankato area until 1948.

In 1948 she married Dwain E. Wood. They resided in Sandwich, Ill., Abilene and Brownsville, Tenn., before divorcing. She returned to Dexter in 1979.

A homemaker, she was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include two sons, David W. Wood, Spring, Texas, and Michael D. Wood, Oak Hill, Va.; a daughter, Susan Wood Parker, Valley Center; and five grandchildren.

Martin Boss

Martin Carl Boss, 69, of Winfield, died Dec. 23, 2001, at his home.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Powhattan Cemetery. The Rev. Stanley Widman will officiate.

Memorials have been established with the Oxford Friendship Center and the Oxford First Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through Oxford Funeral Service, LLC.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. The family will receive callers from 7 to 8.

Boss was born Aug. 10, 1932, in Baker, to Edna Maude (Clouse) and Ernest Carl Boss. He attended schools in Baker. Boss farmed with his father until his death in 1969, then moved to Winfield with his mother.

A member of the First Baptist Church in Oxford, Boss worked in the warehouse at Grief Brothers Corp. until retiring in 1994.

Survivors include his sister, Donna Jean Sauzek, Oxford, a niece and three nephews.

Pauline Smith

HOWARD - Pauline Smith, 86, longtime resident of Howard, died Dec. 26, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. Pastor Robin Haines will officiate. Private burial will be in Cresco Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Howard Church of Christ. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Smith was born Jan. 16, 1915, near Howard, to Nannie Bell (Baird) and Benjamin Corbin. She attended Mary Belle rural school and graduated from Howard High School in 1935.

On Feb. 26, 1938, she married Kenneth Owen Smith in Moline.

A homemaker, she also was the Howard correspondent for The Flint Hills Express for many years. Her husband died Jan. 6, 1994.

She was a member of the Cowgirls singing group and a longtime member of the Howard Church of Christ.

Survivors include a daughter, Paula Lanning, Howard; two sons, Ron Smith, Haysville, and Donald Smith, Wichita; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Tommy Bowlby

Services for Tommy E. Bowlby were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 28, 2001, at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. K.B. Murray officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Music was "Down by the River" "I'll Fly Away" and "The Sunny Side of Life."

Casket bearers were Eric Earls, Kim Howell, Michael Miller, Robert Potter, Troy Puller, Roger Sutton and Junior Wilson.

Dori Cooper

CORBIN - Memorial services for Dorothy J. "Dori" Evans Cooper were held Dec. 22, 2001, at the Corbin United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jan McDaniel officiated. Inurnment was in Corzine Cemetery.

Vocal music included "Jesus Loves Me" performed by Devin Clark, "How Can I Keep from Singing?" by Becky Clark, "Wind Beneath My Wings" by Jim and Virginia Vanek, and "The Anchor Holds" by Troy Clark.

The Corbin Bell Choir played "Silent Night" and "The Lord's Prayer." Peggy Ginn was the pianist.

Shirley Reed

CEDAR VALE - Shirley J. Reed, 35, of Cedar Vale, died Dec. 24, 2001.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wheeler Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with National Parents of Murdered Children, 100 E. Eighth, B-41, Cincinnati, OH 45202.

Reed was born July 11, 1966, in Boulder, Colo., to Bettie (Hull) and James Smith. She was raised in Cedar Vale and graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1984. She attended Independence Community College and became a registered nurse.

She was employed in the cardiac intensive care unit at Jane Phillips Hospital in Bartlesville.

Reed was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Independence.

Survivors include three daughters, Rachel D. Reed, Caitlyn A. Reed and Rikki Jo Reed, all of Cedar Vale; her father, James Smith, Moorhead, Minn.; her mother, Bettie Wright, Cedar Vale; two sisters, Aline Kaye Boyer, Wahpeton, N.D., and Patricia Anne Danes, Arkansas City; and a brother, James W. Smith, Winterhaven, Fla.

Wilma Wood

Memorial services for Wilma J. (Darst) Wood were held at 10 a.m. Dec. 28, 2001, at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated. "Amazing Grace" was presented by Mollie, Shelley and Spencer Wood.

A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
