Jack Hendrickson

Jack C. Hendrickson, 92, longtime resident of Cowley County, died Jan. 13, 2002, at the Kansas Veterans Home at Winfield.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with the Winfield Church of Christ. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Hendrickson was born Jan. 11, 1910, on a farm south of Cambridge, to Maude (Hedrick) and George H. Hendrickson. The family moved to western Kansas and then to Winfield when he was seven. He attended Winfield schools and worked in farming as a young man. He worked as a delivery man and clerk and eventually owned and operated Hendrickson Grocery Store on 11th.

During World War II, he served with the United States Army in the European Theater.

Hendrickson worked as a salesman for Sunshine Biscuit Co. in south-central Kansas from 1953 until retiring in 1973.

On May 7, 1966, he married DeDe M. Hoss in Independence, and they made their home in Winfield. She died Dec. 11, 1991.

Hendrickson was a member of the Church of Christ. He was also affiliated with Lodge 110 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 and American Legion Post 10, all of Winfield.

Survivors include an adopted son, John Hendrickson; a stepdaughter, Lynn Kittleson, Princeton, Texas; two stepgrandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

Edwin Pray

WICHITA - Edwin Wayne Pray, 83, of Wichita, died Jan. 13, 2002.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hillside Christian Church. Burial will be in Wichita Park Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Hillside Christian Church, 8330 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67206, and the Wichita State University Foundation Ed Pray Scholarship, P.O. Box 2, Wichita, KS 67260-0002.

Pray was born Aug. 14, 1918, in Wichita, to Goldie (Banghart) and Walter Pray.

He was retired from Pray Brothers Plumbing & Heating Contractors.

Pray was a past president of the Wichita and Kansas plumbing, heating and cooling contractors associations and a member of the Downtown Lions Club, Wichita Scottish Rite Body and Midian Shrine.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Marie Pray, Wichita; a son, Ron Pray, Winfield; three daughters, Marilyn Ratay, Lake Zurich, Ill., Trish Bittle, Richardson, Texas, and Janis Heinz, Overland Park; and 10 grandchildren.

Thongsa Srimoungchanh

Services for Thongsa Srimoungchanh were held at 10 a.m. Jan. 14, 2002, at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Music included "How Great Thou Art" and "In the Garden."

Casket bearers were Ricky Bennett, Dai Hoang, Wilfredo Rios and Keokousonh, Kongseng and Koulamanee Srimoungchanh.

Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church and the American Cancer Society.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Helen Gann

Services for Helen Jean Gann were held at 3 p.m. Jan. 12, 2002, in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Kathy Gann officiated.

Memorials have been established with the Memorial Forest at Winfield City Lake and the Arthritis Foundation of Kansas.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Luther Ferguson

UDALL - Services for Luther B. Ferguson were held at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 15, 2002, at the Udall Congregational Church. Pastor Steve Ward officiated. Burial was in Udall Cemetery.

Julie Burley performed "Because He Lives" and "Daddy's Hands." Carrie Middleton was the organist.

Honorary casket bearers were Kimberly Bevan, Diana Klein, Sue Miller, Rita Morton, Janet Schanbacher, Kay Sutphin, Micki Wilson and Vickie Jo Woolbright.

Casket bearers were Gary and Johnny Brookings, Michael Lacey, Britt Miller, Bobby Morgan, Don, Mark and Thomas Morton, and Ken and Terry Seaman.

Memorials have been established with the Udall Congregational Church and the Udall First Responders.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Rosie Lundquist

Services for A. Rosalind "Rosie" Lundquist were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 15, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Burial was in Lakeview Gardens in Wichita.

Music included "In the Garden" and "Amazing Grace."

A memorial has been established with the Winfield Gardenaires.

Jack Heffner

Jack K. Heffner, 84, of 702 E. Fifth, Winfield, lifelong Cowley County resident, died Jan. 15, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight. The family will greet visitors from 6 to 8.

A memorial has been established with Hackney Community Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Heffner was born July 31, 1917, on the Fred Clark ranch in Cowley County, to Cora (Pickett) and John Richard Heffner. He graduated from Udall High School in 1935.

On April 10, 1940, he married Dorothy Ann Shade in Winfield. She died May 13, 1970.

On Dec. 10, 1971, he married Madlyne E. Kelly in Miami, Okla.

From July 1945 to January 1946 Heffner was stationed with the United States Army at Camp Fannin in Texas.

As a young man, Heffner had worked in oil fields. In 1948 he began working for Weidemann Oil Co. as a contract pumper. He then worked for Blair Oil Co. from 1973 until his death.

Survivors include his wife, Madlyne Heffner, Winfield; two sons, Richard Heffner, Kechi, and Martin Heffner, Wichita; a stepson, Bud Widner, Clyde; two sisters, Ruth Shiflett, Iowa, and Mary Shiflett, Winfield; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Hall

Dorothy Mildred Underwood Hall, 76, of 1514 E. Ninth, Winfield, died Jan. 15, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.

Memorials have been established with the Kansas Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America and Meals on Wheels. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Hall was born Jan. 26, 1925, on a farm near Tisdale, to Viola Mae (Miller) and Albert Earle Benjamin. She attended grade school at Tisdale and graduated from Winfield High School in 1943.

On May 7, 1943, she married Dwain R. Underwood, and they made their home in Winfield. He died Aug. 23, 1973.

Hall was employed at St. Mary's Hospital and later as a clerk at Anthony's, the Wonder Bread store and various other places. She worked in production at Binney & Smith from 1965 until retiring in 1987.

On Dec. 15, 1984, she married James C. Hall, and they made their home in Winfield. He died Dec. 7, 1995.

Hall was a member of the First Christian Church and was also involved with Meals on Wheels. She was known as the "Ninth Avenue Duck Lady" because of the costumes she made and displayed on cement ducks on her porch.

Survivors include two daughters, Montra Liermann, Winfield, and Martha Butler, Neosho, Mo.; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Homer Bishop

ATLANTA - Homer Kenneth "Chief" Bishop, 79, of Atlanta, died Jan. 15, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Winfield.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the Atlanta Fire Department First Responders. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Bishop was born Jan. 23, 1922, in Tuskahoma, Okla., to Florence "Peg" (Lawyer) and Berry F. Bishop. He attended grade schools in Oklahoma and Kansas and graduated from Franklin High School in Rockford, Ill., in 1939.

He enlisted in the United States Army Air Force in 1940 and served during World War II.

On Aug. 6, 1941, he married Margaret Eileen Martin. They made their home in many places and later divorced.

After the war, Bishop worked as a ranch hand on the Wakefield Ranch in Cowley County and the Blair Ranch in Butler County. He later worked at Cessna and Beech Aircraft in Wichita and Loadcraft in Augusta, then owned and operated the Mobil station in Atlanta in the 1950s.

From the 1960s through the 1980s, Bishop worked in construction, traveled and became an artist. He attended classes at the University of Oklahoma and the Black Hawk Seminar in Rockford, Ill.

On Dec. 1, 1976, he married Betty Jean (Myrick) Strauhs in Poteau, Okla. They made their home in Garden City and then in Atlanta. Because of failing health, Bishop retired in 1980.

He was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church of Garden City and affiliated with the National Rifle Association, the Choctaw Nation and American Legion Post 10 in Winfield.

A daughter, Kate, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Bishop, Atlanta; four daughters, Julia "Judy" Smalley, Atlanta, Margo Dennett, Enid, Okla., Lori Zoglemann, Conway Springs, and Tammy Rice, Winfield; a son, Homer Kenneth Bishop Jr., Drummond, Okla.; a stepson, Lonnie Strauhs, Wichita; a sister, Leatrice "Lea" Joy Carter, Spiro, Okla.; 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
