Faye Johnson

VALLEY CENTER -- Faye Lavauun Johnson, 80, of Valley Center, died Jan. 26, 2002, at her home.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Baker Funeral Home. Pastors Rob Rotola and Wes Wolken will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery at Arkansas City.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association for Stroke Victims.

Johnson was born July 12, 1921, in Mountain View, Mo., to Martha Cerena (Weaver) and Walcie Leander Helms.

On April 23, 1944, she married Joe S. Johnson in Wichita. She worked as secretary-bookkeeper for Joe S. Johnson Inc. Painting Contractor, the business she and her husband owned.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Johnson, Valley Center; three daughters, Scharon Johnson, Colorado, Debbie Miller, Burden, and Brenda Salas, Sedgwick; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Wilford Smith

ANTHONY -- Wilford Lee "Smitty" Smith, 69, of Anthony, died Jan. 25, 2002, in Anthony.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Williams Funeral Home. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in Byron-Amorita Cemetery, Byron, Okla.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Anthony Library, Harper County Emergency Medical Service or Anthony Congregational Church.

Smith was born Sept. 16, 1932, in Amorita, Okla., to Florence (Clutter) and Arthur H. Smith.

On Jan. 26, 1954, he married Saundra Lee in Amorita.

A retired pharmacist, Smith was a member of Masonic Lodge 105, Alva, Okla., and the Christian Church, Burlington, Okla.

Survivors include his wife, Saundra Smith, Anthony; a son, Michael Smith, Danville; a daughter, Stephanie Nulik, Winfield; two brothers, Wes Smith, Alva, Okla., and Larry Smith, McPherson; and four grandchildren.

Frances Patterson

DEXTER -- Frances L. Patterson, 87, of Dexter, formerly of Winfield, died Jan. 28, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday. The Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established with Holy Name Catholic Church.

Patterson was born Jan. 14, 1915, in Moline, to Mary (McBride) and Wilson Turner. She was raised in the Moline area and graduated from Moline High School.

On April 15, 1933, she married Jay Frank "J.F." Patterson. He died Sept. 29, 1979. A son, Donnie Lee Patterson, also preceded her in death.

Patterson worked at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for many years, clerked at Graves Drug Store and owned Pat's Antiques.

She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, the Altar Society and the Cub Scout program there.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald Patterson, Winfield, and Gary Patterson, Dexter; a daughter, Marlyn Thomas, Woodward, Okla.; nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Rosie Widner

OXFORD -- Rosie B. Widner, 81, of Oxford, died Jan. 27, 2002, at Riverview Manor.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Oxford Funeral Service, 104 N. Summer. The Rev. Curtis Fike will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 5 p.m. today.

A memorial has been established with Riverview Manor. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Widner was born Sept. 16, 1920, in Gypsum, to Bessie (Barker) and Major Porter.

She had been a resident of Riverview Manor since 1968, moving there from Wellington.

Survivors include a brother, Clevie Porter, and a sister, Minnie, addresses unknown.

Christabel Dean

MANHATTAN -- Christabel L. Dean, 93, of Manhattan, died Jan. 28, 2002, at Stoneybrook Retirement Community.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan. The Rev. Devin Wendt will officiate.

Friends may call at Brockmeier Funeral Chapel, 112 S. Broadway, Herington, from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church of Herington.

Dean was born March 28, 1908, in Parkerville, to Bertha A. (Victor) and Albert B. Stone.

Her first husband, Haskel H. Hickey, died in 1960. Her second husband, Lester B. Dean, and two daughters, Jean Johnson and Joan Ruppel, also preceded her in death.

A homemaker, Dean was a member of the First Christian Church of Herington.

Survivors include a son, Howard Hickey, Winfield; four daughters, Delores Vaught and Marilyn Traskowsky, both of Kansas City, Mo., and Margaret Vaughn and Kay Smith, both of Manhattan; a half-sister, Juanita Leslie, San Diego; 17 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

Alice Goodnight

HOWARD -- Alice Elizabeth Goodnight, 90, longtime resident of Howard, died Jan. 27, 2002, at Westview Manor Nursing Center in Derby.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. The Revs. Kibum Kim and Gary Parsons will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Howard United Methodist Church. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Goodnight was born Sept. 13, 1911, at Bridgeport, Ill., to Gertie Mae (Schaeffer) and Ira Delmar Jones.

On Nov. 18, 1930, she married John Edgar "Ed" Goodnight in Wichita. In 1941 they bought a farm north of Howard which they operated for many years. In 1985 they retired and moved into Howard.

Her son, Jack Goodnight, died Dec. 22, 1990, and her husband died Nov. 16, 1991.

Goodnight was a member of the Kansas Farm Bureau and an Extension Homemakers Unit and was a 4-H leader for several years. She was a member of the Howard United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

Survivors include three daughters, Betty Goodnight and Joyce Giesy, both of Houston, and Darline Dameron, Haysville; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Carl Edwards

NOBLE, Okla. -- Carl Raymond Edwards, 42, died unexpectedly Jan. 14, 2002, at his home near Noble.

Services were held Jan. 17 at the McMahans Chapel. Jerry Jackson officiated.

Edwards was born Sept. 30, 1959, in Fairfax, Okla., to Coene (Smock) and Don Edwards. The family later moved to Noble, Okla., where he graduated from high school in 1977.

He worked in the family heating and cooling business and then for CPT Security Co.

Survivors include his parents, Don and Coene Edwards, and a sister, Mary Bowman, all of Noble.
