Zona Dowler

WICHITA -- Zona W. Dowler, 86, formerly of Winfield, died Jan. 25, 2002, in Wichita.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Riverlawn Christian Church. Pastor Roger London will officiate. The Rev. Charles Greer will perform the committal service at Mission Chapel Mausoleum. Burial will follow in Old Mission Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Riverlawn Christian Church, 4243 N. Meridian, Wichita, KS 67204, or the American Heart Association, 2100 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67214.

Hillside Funeral Home West is in charge of arrangements.

Dowler was born April 15, 1915, in Wann, Okla., to Susan Emma (Watt) and William Oliver McDonald. She graduated from Sedan High School and from Wichita Vocational Technical College as a licensed practical nurse.

On Sept. 10, 1938, she married Fred J. Dowler in Tulsa.

She was a former member of the Bentonville, Ark., Baptist Church and worked with the youth group there. She was a lifetime member of the Good Sams Club and past assistant state director for northwest Arkansas.

She was an active member of Riverlawn Christian Church and instrumental in organizing a prayer group and RSVP group at Westpark Tower Apartments. She was active in Senior Services and promoted new ministries for seniors in her church.

Survivors include her husband, Fred Dowler, Wichita; two sons, David J. Dowler, Phoenix, and Freddie C. Dowler, San Diego; two daughters, Katherine C. Jones and Karen S. Kelly, both of Wichita; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Catherine Edwards

Services for Catherine Sue Edwards were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 29, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Norman Reeves officiated, and Amy Helsel was the speaker. Burial was in Dexter Cemetery.

Music included recordings of "The Rose" by Bette Midler, "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan, "Only Time" by Enya, and "Be Still and Know" by Steven Curtis Chapman.

Honorary casket bearers were Jack and Harry Drake.

Casket bearers were Richard Artherton, Jason and Matt Drake, Joe McDaniel, Mark Nelson and Jeremy Vaden.

A fund has been established to help the family with funeral expenses.

Walter Howell

Walter Halice Howell, 85, of 717 E. Sixth, Winfield, died Jan. 26, 2002, at Good Samaritan Village.

Cremation has taken place.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Assembly of God.

A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.

Howell was born Jan. 27, 1916, in Stephenville, Ala., to Paralee (Culver) and Ralph Howell. He attended school in Beggs, Okla.

On May 26, 1939, he married Ethel Pinard in Okmulgee, Okla. They made their home in Okmulgee where he had various jobs.

In 1946 they moved to Dexter. He was employed by Missouri Pacific Railroad for 10 years.

In 1956 he moved to Winfield and worked at Winfield Consolidated Flour Mill until it closed in about 1964. Then he worked at the Winfield Co-op until retiring in 1980.

Howell was a member of the First Assembly of God Church for over 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel Howell, Winfield; two sons, Leon Howell, Winfield, and Don Howell, Boise, Idaho; a daughter, Shirley Heater, Salina; two sisters, Inez Weaver, California, and Martha Graves, Tahlequah, Okla.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Theresa Musgrove

ARKANSAS CITY -- Theresa Ann Musgrove, 53, of Arkansas City, died Jan. 28, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

The Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday, and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, both at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Cremation has been effected.

Contributions may be made to a scholarship fund for USD 470 through Hawks Funeral Home.

Musgrove was born Dec. 28, 1948, in Arkansas City, to Betty (Kettle) and Jerald Shaw. She graduated from Gridley High School and attended Emporia State University.

On Nov. 24, 1972, she married Clyde E. Musgrove in Maize. The family lived in Salina several years before moving to Arkansas City.

Musgrove was a paraprofessional for the Arkansas City school district. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Clyde Musgrove, and three sons, Joseph, Christopher and Michael Musgrove, all of Arkansas City; three daughters, Daytha Wison, Jacksonville, N.C., and Dacinda Musgrove and Damanda Musgrove, both of Arkansas City; three brothers, Tom, Robert and Michael Shaw, all of Arkansas City; and one grandson.

Ruth Smalley

JETMORE -- Ruth E. Smalley, 87, of Jetmore, died Jan. 28, 2002, at Hodgeman County Long Term Care Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Jetmore United Methodist Church. The Rev. Mitch Reece will officiate. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery.

Friends may call at Beckwith Funeral Home until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jetmore United Methodist Church or Hodgeman County Long Term Care Center through the funeral home, Box 663, Jetmore, KS 67854.

Smalley was born April 18, 1914, in rural Hodgeman County, to Rebecca (Duncan) and Oscar Smalley.

A longtime area resident, she was a bookkeeper for W.W. Virtue Mercantile Co., Coca-Cola Bottling Co. and the Dodge City Globe. She was also a teacher in Hodgeman, Sumner and Cowley counties.

Smalley was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women of Jetmore and Dodge City, and Business and Professional Women. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Survivors include two sisters, Grace Watt, Winfield, and Mary Wilson, Jetmore.

Maxine Vaught

Maxine H. Vaught, 87, of Winfield, died Jan. 29 at William Newton Hospital.

Vaught recently moved to Winfield from Wichita and had resided at Good Samaritan Village for three months.

Downing & Lahey Mortuary in Wichita is in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence Miller

Lawrence H. Miller, 81, of 21364 51st Road, Winfield, died Jan. 28, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Tannehill Cemetery south of Winfield.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Miller was born July 11, 1920, in Beaver Township in Cowley County, to Emma (Johnson) and John D. Miller. He attended the Tannehill school and graduated from Winfield High School in 1938.

Miller worked on the family farm until entering the U.S. Army in 1942. He led a crew that worked on development of top secret anti-aircraft radar; served in the 42nd Rainbow Division that liberated Dachau concentration camp during World War II; and took part in the Army occupation of Austria. After being discharged in 1946, he returned to Cowley County.

On Jan. 12, 1947, he married Patricia Irene Roush at the First Baptist Church. They made their home on a farm in Pleasant Valley until moving to Beaver Township in 1958.

Miller was a farmer for many years. After his retirement in 1985, he restored antique farm equipment and was an active member of the Kansas and Oklahoma Steam and Gas Engine Association.

A member of the First Baptist Church, Miller served as a trustee for many years. He also served on the Hackney Co-op board, was clerk of the Tannehill school district for many years and was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 10.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Miller, Winfield; two sons, Larry Miller, Jasper, Texas, and Randy Miller, Wichita; a daughter, Marlene Finney, Winfield; two sisters, Glorrine Brinigar, Winfield, and Jeanette Kittrell, Las Cruces, N.M.; and four grandchildren.
