Leonard Stoddard

Leonard Earl Stoddard, 83, of Winfield, died Jan. 30, 2002, at his residence.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Parker Cemetery at Arkansas City. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Stoddard was born Nov. 18, 1918, in Iola, Okla., to Della May (Morgan) and Lloyd Earl Stoddard. He was raised and educated in Arkansas City.

During World War II he served in the 37th Division of the 148th Combat Infantry of the United States Army. He was stationed in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

On Nov. 18, 1939, he married Doris Mae Green in Arkansas City. They lived in Arkansas City before moving to Winfield. Stoddard was a logger for the Four State Walnut Logging Co.

His wife died in 1989. A son, David Earl Stoddard, and a daughter, Geraldine L. Stoddard, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth L. Stoddard, and a daughter, Debra Wilson, both of Winfield; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

James Smith

James Franklin Smith, 62, of 2802 W. Seventh, lifelong resident of Winfield, died Jan. 31, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The family requests memorial contributions to the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Association. They may be made through the funeral home.

Smith was born Oct. 12, 1939, in Winfield, to Beulah Mae (Brooks) and Charles F. Smith. He was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1957. Shortly after graduation he began employment at Smith & Moon Manufacturing as a welder and worked there until 1980.

On Dec. 12, 1965, he married Linda Graber in Belmont. They made their home in Winfield.

Smith was a well-known poultry and wildlife propagator in this area. In 1988 he started his own business, Smith Fire Extinguisher Service, from which he retired in October 2001.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Smith, Winfield; four sons, James M. Garnand, Peoria, Ill., Thomas F. Stubbs, Perkins, Okla., Andrew J. Smith, Winfield, and Brian Keith Smith, Mesquite, Nev.; two daughters, Kathy Stubbs, Colorado, and Nira Dawn Condon, Winfield; four brothers, Wayne, Dean and John Smith, all of Winfield, and Gale Smith, Pearce, Ariz.; a sister, Marjorie Dawson, Brooksville, Fla.; and 15 grandchildren.

Walter Howell

Services for Walter Halice Howell were held at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 1, 2002, at the First Assembly of God Church in Winfield. The Rev. Ken Davidson officiated.

Nedra Musgrove was the organist. The congregation sang "Blessed Assurance."

A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Humane Society.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence Miller

Services for Lawrence H. Miller were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 1, 2002, at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. James McIntosh officiated.

Burial was in Tannehill Cemetery. American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 performed military rites.

Music included "Until Then," performed by McIntosh, and congregation singing of "There's a Land That Is Fairer Than Day." Marilyn Buffum was the organist.

Honorary casket bearers were Harold Berrie, Bob Jennings, Leonard Kukuk, Derrel Pearce, Bob Seley and Ray "Pete" Shields.

Casket bearers were Johnny Brinigar, Matthew Finney, Ivan Gottlob and Eric, Russell and Phillip Miller.

A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Paul Reeves

OVERLAND PARK - Paul W. Reeves, 88, retired Beech Aircraft engineer, of Overland Park, died Jan. 30, 2002.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hillside Funeral Home East.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The family will greet visitors from 2 to 4.

Memorials have been established with the National Kidney Foundation and the Kansas Association for the Blind.

Survivors include a son, Dan Reeves, Overland Park; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Eldearia Smith

Eldearia Smith, 85, of Winfield, former longtime resident of Cambridge, died Feb. 3, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. John Paulin will officiate. Burial will be in Cambridge Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.

Memorials have been established with the Cambridge Presbyterian Church and Winfield Rest Haven. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Smith was born Sept. 20, 1916, in Sumner County, to Alice (Nugen) and Albert James Rymph. She received her earliest education in Sumner County and later attended schools in Conway Springs, Caldwell and Geuda Springs. She received her associate's degree in education from Arkansas City Junior College in 1935 and began teaching in Sumner County that year.

On Feb. 18, 1939, she married Clay J. Smith in Miami, Okla. They lived and worked on a ranch near Cambridge most of their married lives.

Smith received her bachelor's degree in education from Southwestern College in 1959. She taught school in Udall, Cambridge, Latham, Arkansas City and Grenola during her 43-year career. She retired in 1978.

For the past two years, the couple at resided at Winfield Rest Haven.

Smith was a longtime member of the Cambridge Presbyterian Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was also affiliated with the Order of Eastern Star at Burden and a member of the Cowley County CowBelles and the Kansas and national teachers associations. She was a youth and 4-H leader for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Clay Smith, Winfield; two sons, Floyd Smith, Cambridge, and Alan Smith, Era, Texas; a daughter, Kay Hull, Cambridge; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Jerry Taylor

BURDEN – Jerry V. Taylor, 51, of Burden, died Feb. 3, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Cambridge Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home of Burden from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Taylor was born Aug. 7, 1950, in Winfield, to Mary (Hendrickson) and Theo Taylor. He was raised in the Burden area and graduated from Central of Burden High School in 1968. After high school, he joined the Army and served in the Vietnam War before his discharge in 1973.

On Aug. 25, 1972, he married Roxanne Dennett. They divorced in 1992.

Taylor worked in the construction industry as both a carpenter and heavy equipment operator.

Survivors include two daughters, Jamie Suttles, Winfield, and Mary Jean Brock, Ness City; three sisters, Jean Wallace, Borger, Texas, Anita Bassinger, Oklahoma City, and Betty Launchbaugh, Manhattan; five grandchildren and two special friends, Lori Jordan, whom he considered one of his daughters, and her daughter.

James Smith

Services for James Franklin Smith were held at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 4, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ken Davidson officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Music included “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace” and “The Three Bells.”

Honorary casket bearers were Carl Branch, Gary Dyke, Troy Malone and Melvin Ruggles.

Casket bearers were Danny Brown, Jimmy Gardner, Bob Gates, Richard Kearns, Jim Ozbun, Brian K. Smith, David Smith, John Smith Jr. and Thomas F. Stubbs.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Kansas Wildlife & Parks Association.

Edith Barkley

AUGUSTA – Edith May Barkley, 91, of Augusta, formerly of Howard, died Feb. 6, 2002, at Lakepoint Nursing Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Fawn Creek Cemetery near Tyro.

A memorial has been established with the Howard United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Barkley was born Dec. 4, 1910, in Udall, to Ada Belle (Reder) and Frank Albert Brewer. She grew up in the Wichita area and graduated from Mulvane High School.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
