Loretta Riggs

EUSTIS, Fla. – Loretta Pearl Riggs, 76, of Eustis, formerly of Howard, died Feb. 1, 2002, at Tampa General Hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. Scott Hawley will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Riggs was born Feb. 12, 1925, in Fall River, to Flora Edith (Reynolds) and James Elmer Taylor. She grew up in Elk and Greenwood counties and attended Pleasant Plain and Fiat rural schools.

On Oct. 26, 1940, she married Delbert Monroe Riggs in Fiat. They made their home in Washington for many years. They later lived in Howard and Wichita and had recently moved to Eustis to be near their daughter.

A homemaker, Riggs had also been employed as a nurse's aide in home health care.

Survivors include her husband, Delbert Riggs, Eustis, Fla.; three daughters, Theresa Smith, Puyallup, Wash., Anettia Nephew, Eustis, Fla.; and Tena Beaushaw, Tacoma, Wash.; two brothers, Louis Taylor, Elma, Wash., and Jimmie Taylor, Winnemucca, Nev.; two sisters, Pauline Turley, Wichita, and Wretha Jackson, Howard; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Lee Gee

BENTON – Curtis Lee Gee, 39, of Benton, died Feb. 2, 2002.

Services were at 10 a.m. Feb. 8 at Plymouth Congregational Church in Wichita. Burial was in Iuka Cemetery. Downing & Lahey Mortuary in Wichita was in charge of arrangements.

Contributions may be sent to the Lee Gee Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Bank of Oklahoma, 3037 S. Garnett, Tulsa, OK 74129.

Gee was born Feb. 20, 1962, at St. John, to Ramona Lee (Mayo) and James Louis Gee. He received a bachelor's degree in agronomy from Fort Hays State University.

On March 26, 1992, he married Janet Leanora Biggs, formerly of Winfield, in Wichita.

Gee was president and chief executive officer of Westar Energy Corporation & Lawn Agronomist Inc. He was also a farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Gee, and a daughter, Mckenzie Lee Allene Gee, both of Benton; a stepson, Brendon Wheelock, Medicine Lodge, a stepdaughter, Eryn Leanora Guy, Wichita; his mother, Ramona Gee, Bristow, Okla.; two brothers, J.L. Gee, Bristow, and Lonnie Gee, Iuka; a sister, Sharon Allene Gee, Bristow; and a granddaughter.

Regina Baughman

MOLINE – Mary Regina Baughman, 80, longtime resident of Moline, died Feb. 6, 2002, at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville.

A Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, both at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. Edward J. Steinberger will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, south of Moline.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be left at Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Baughman was born Sept. 6, 1921, in Moline, to Rita Elizabeth (Welch) and Elby Eugene Palmer. She attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated from Moline High School. During the early and mid-1940s, she lived in Wichita.

On May 19, 1947, she married Donald Phillip Baughman in Moline where they made their home. Her husband died Sept. 12, 1999.

A homemaker, Baughman was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was active in the church's altar society.

Survivors include a son, Pat Baughman, Tampa, Fla.; two daughters, Linda Mellen, Caney, and Annette Baughman, Moline; a brother, Paul Palmer, Austin, Texas; a sister, Phyllis Ives, Phoenix; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Jerry Taylor

CAMBRIDGE – Services for Jerry V. “Froggy” Taylor were held at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 7, 2002, in Cambridge Cemetery. The Rev. Jerre Nolte officiated.

A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Judy Stiles

Jewell “Judy” Stiles, 86, of Winfield, died Feb. 4, 2002, at her home.

She had bequeathed her body to the University of Kansas Medical School for research.

Stiles was born April 30, 1914, near Burden, to Etta (Able) and Charles J. Gulick. She graduated from Burden High School in 1933.

On Oct. 21, 1933, she married Merle D. Neubecker, and they made their home in Grenola. They later divorced.

On March 20, 1940, she married Ralph T. Stiles, and they lived in Grenola for two years. Then they moved to Hawthorne, Nev., and worked there during World War II. They also lived in Reno, Nev., Washington, Odessa, Texas, and other cities. Stiles worked at the post office in Odessa for three years. They moved to Arkansas before moving to Winfield in 1954. For about 10 years, she worked at Ruppelius Fine Jewelers.

Her husband died Oct. 7, 1997.

Stiles was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include a brother, Jess R. Gulick, Titusville, Fla., nieces and nephews.

Maude Grant

CEDAR VALE – Maude Loverne Grant, 90, homemaker, of Cedar Vale, died Feb. 7, 2002, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Friends may sign a register at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to noon Monday.

Memorial contributions may be made to any charity.

Grant was born July 30, 1911, on a farm near Wauneta, to Bertha O. (Scott) and Frank Hill. She attended the Bunn Gardner School in the Wauneta-Hewins area.

In 1954 she married Max Grant. He died in 1970.

Survivors include a sister, Goldy Wemmer, Sedan.

Lorene Duncan

Lorene Hazel Duncan, 86, of Winfield, died Feb. 7, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-Riverside Health Systems in Wichita.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Wilmot Cemetery north of Winfield.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday.

Duncan was born Dec. 9, 1915, in Atlanta, to Ruth (Hefken) and William Otis Wadsack. After high school, she attended Pittsburg State Teachers College and received her teaching certificate in 1938. She taught in Chanute for a time.

On Nov. 24, 1945, she married Wayne W. Duncan, and they made their home in Wichita. She taught at Amelia Earhart Elementary School, Arkansas Ave. Elementary School and many others before she retired from Pleasant Valley Elementary School in 1981. She received an award for her 15 years of service as a teacher in the Wichita school system.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne W. Duncan, Winfield; two sons, Michael W. Duncan, West Virginia, and Darrell W. Duncan, Derby; a daughter, Sharon L. Jordan, the Marshall Islands; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mary Jo Wrampe

Mary Jo Wrampe, 82, formerly of Atlanta, died Feb. 9, 2002, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Atlanta Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials have been established with the Douglass Christian Church and Atlanta Fire Department First Responders. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Wrampe was born Jan. 25, 1920, in Elk City, to Nellie Elizabeth (Wilson) and Sam B. Davidson. She was raised in Elk City where she graduated from high school in 1938.

In 1941 she graduated from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Winfield and became a registered nurse. She was first employed at the hospital in Independence.

On April 21, 1946, she married Francis Melvin Wrampe in Independence. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Topeka where she worked for the Security Benefit Association Hospital.

The Wrampes then returned to Winfield where she worked for St. Mary's Hospital, for William Newton Hospital for a year and again at St. Mary's Hospital until its closing. Wrampe then worked at Winfield State Hospital & Training Center from 1960 until retiring in 1983.

Wrampe was a life member of the American Nursing Association, Kansas State Nursing Association and St. Mary's Alumni Association. She was active in the Atlanta Garden Club, the Progress Club and an extension homemakers unit. She was a former 4-H leader and had led the Endeavor youth group at Cambridge Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Melvin Wrampe, Winfield; a son, Ron Wrampe, Leon; a daughter, Edell Holt, Atlanta; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Orville Strohl

Services for the Rev. C. Orville Strohl were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 9, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Allen Polen, Dick Merriman, Fred Houston, David Nichols and Jerre Nolte officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Laura Belle Haines was the organist, and Robbie Banks was the pianist. Music included “Just a Closer Walk With Thee,” played by J.J. Banks on the clarinet; “Amazing Grace,” sung by Martin Rude; “Beautiful Savior” and “Alma Mater,” performed by members of the Southwestern College A Cappella Choir; and “Hymn of Promise,” sung by the congregation.

Casket bearers were Strohl's grandchildren, Stephanie Bollinger, Cyndy Bull, Kim Clark, Elizabeth and Kirk Darfler, Carolyn Gillis and Brian, Chad and Todd Strohl.

Memorials have been established with Southwestern College, Camp Horizon and Iliff School of Theology.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Lynnie Samms

JUNCTION CITY – Lynnie Ray Samms, 78, of Junction City, died Feb. 9, 2002, at Salina Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Johnson Funeral Chapel. Nate Butler will officiate. Burial will be in Fort Riley Cemetery with full military honors.

Friends may call at Johnson Funeral Chapel, 203 N. Washington, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
