Opal Robinson

Opal A. Robinson, 94, of Winfield, died Feb. 22, 2002, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Robinson was born Oct. 27, 1907, in Kaw City, Okla., to Minnie (Graham) and Benjamin Stiner. She was raised in the Cambridge and Winfield areas.

She lived in Udall, Oklahoma and eastern Kansas before settling in Wichita. Through the years she worked at Boeing and was a seamstress along with doing various other jobs before retiring in the late 1970s. She moved to Winfield in the 1970s and for several years worked at a laundry.

Robiinson was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

A son, Carl Robinson Jr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include her grandchildren, Susan Salmans, Mulvane, and Howard Robinson, Shawnee; and four great-grandchildren, Rachel and Nathan Salmans, Latisha Robinson and Michelle Witt.

Kenneth Huff

UDALL – Services for Kenneth E. Huff were held at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 25, 2002, in Ninnescah Cemetery at Udall. Pastor Ted Brown officiated.

Personnel from the Winfield Fire Department served as casket bearers and presented a flag to the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cherilyn Huff Scholarship Fund in care of The State Bank or the Cystic Fibrosis Fund.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Aaron Page

Services for Sgt. Aaron Allen Page were held at 10 a.m. Feb. 25, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Captain John Manuel officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

A military honor guard was provided by the U.S. Army Co. C, 1st/23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.

John Lindsay played “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipe. Other music was “All Apologies,” performed by Nirvana, “The Dance,” performed by Garth Brooks, “Angel,” performed by Sarah McLachlan, and “Please Remember Me,” performed by Tim McGraw.

An education fund has been established for Ethan Allen Page. Contributions may be made through CornerBank, Winfield.

Alma Cochran

WICHITA – Services for Alma O. Cochran were held at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 25, 2002, in Wichita Park Cemetery. The Rev. Rick Hathaway officiated.

A memorial has been established with Trinity Lutheran Church.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lucille Davis

Lucille Berneice Davis, 91, of 1330 Wheat Road, Winfield, died Feb. 26, 2002, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church and the Good Samaritan Village Activities Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Davis was born May 18, 1910, on a farm near New Salem, to Adelia and Daniel Hindman. When she was a child, the family moved to Winfield where she graduated from Winfield High School in 1928.

In January 1929 she married Hillary Davis in Winfield. He died in March 1943.

Davis worked at Seymour Packing Co. in Winfield and then sold insurance for Prudential Insurance Co. In 1946 she started working in the Cowley County clerk's office and was employed there for 28 years. She retired in 1974.

Davis was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include a son, Bill Davis, Winfield; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Greely Elliott

Greely R. Elliott, 79, of Winfield, died Feb. 22, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 5 p.m. Friday.

Elliott was born Jan. 27, 1923, in Keystone, Ala., to Alma (McKnight) and LeRoy Elliott. He was raised and educated in Keystone. When he was 17, he entered the U.S. Navy and served for four years during World War II. He became disabled during the war and was honorably discharged.

In 1944 he married Gladys White in Helena, Ala., and they made their first home in Alabaster, Ala. In 1954 they moved to Winfield where he held various part-time jobs.

Elliott attended Second Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Elliott, Winfield.

Mildred Davis

Mildred Una Davis, 92, of Winfield, died Feb. 26, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday. The family will greet visitors from 7 to 8.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Davis was born July 7, 1909, in Augusta, to Una Mary (Cloud) and Winfield Scott Crowley. The family moved to a farm near Atlanta, and she attended Atlanta and Burden schools. She received a teacher's certificate from Pittsburg State Teachers College and taught school in Cowley County for seven years.

On Sept. 1, 1936, she married Gilbert F. Davis in Douglass. They farmed near Rock and Cambridge before moving to a farm west of Burden in the 1940s. In 1968 the couple moved to Winfield. Her husband died July 16, 1988.

Davis was formerly affiliated with the Burden United Methodist Church and later a member of the Winfield Free Methodist Church where she held various offices. She was also a member of the Tisdale Women's Temperance Union.

Survivors include three daughters, Marolyn Lytle, Smith Center, Carolyn Daniels, Abilene, and Kathlyn Lady, Independence, Mo.; a sister, Velma Parish, Cambridge; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Terri Browning, Winfield.

Barbara Buck

DEXTER – Barbara Lee Buck, 76, of Grouse Valley Manor, Dexter, died Feb. 25, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Dexter Cemetery. The Rev. Norman Reeves will officiate.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 7 tonight.

Buck was born July 4, 1925, in Lavern, Okla., to Leah (Sutton) and Joe R. Knoble. The family moved to Turlock, Calif., in 1938. On Nov. 11, 1964, she married Robert Buck in California. In 1967 they moved to Grove, Okla., and managed a resort until moving to Dexter in 1990.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Buck, Dexter.

Norman Albright

Norman M. Albright, 70, lifelong resident of Winfield, died Feb. 25, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be private. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established for Winfield Youth Swimming, c/o Legacy Foundation, Norman Albright Memorial, 311 E. 10th, Winfield, KS 67156.

Albright was born Dec. 19, 1931, in Winfield, to Louise and James Albright. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1949 and from Beloit College in Beloit, Wis., in 1953 with bachelor‘s degrees in mathematics and geology. At Beloit he was a member of the football, cross country and swim teams.

On Dec. 31, 1953, he married Marilyn Pereue.

After college he served two years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before returning to Winfield to work at Albright Investment Co. in 1955. At Albright Investment he worked in real estate, insurance and appraising and as a mortgage loan underwriter. He retired as president in 1995.

Albright had served as president of the Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce, the Winfield Board of Realtors, the Wichita Area Society of Real Estate Appraisers and the Kansas Chapter of Real Estate Appraisers. He was also a member of the American Legion.

Albright played French horn with the Winfield City Band and one season with the Wichita Symphony. He had been involved in Winfield Community Theater and was a founder and longtime coach of the Winfield Swim Club.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Albright, a son, Jeffrey Albright, and a daughter, Julia Thompson, all of Winfield; a brother, Philip Albright, Lake Placid, N.Y.; a sister, Eleanor Lockhart, Lawrence; and six grandchildren.

Roy Dowler

ARKANSAS CITY – Roy C. Dowler, 87, of Arkansas City, died Feb. 24, 2002, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Springside Cemetery at Arkansas City. Pastor Ken Scott will officiate.

Memorials have been established with Grandview United Methodist Church and Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Dowler was born Feb. 28, 1914, in Winfield, to Addie (Chambers) and Warren W. Dowler. He was raised in Winfield and attended South Vernon School.

In July 1944 he married Juanita May Scott in Newkirk. They made their home in rural Newkirk and later moved to rural Arkansas City. His wife preceded him in death.

A farmer, Dowler was a member of Grandview United Methodist Church and of the Milk Producers Association.

Survivors include four sons, Roy Wayne Dowler Sr. and Richard O. Dowler, both of Arkansas City, and Warren Dale Dowler and Jim Dowler, both of Newkirk; four daughters, Alvena Ruth Dowler, Oklahoma City, and Joyce Harjo, Lois Jennings and Mary Jane Dowler, all of Arkansas City; a brother, Fred Dowler, Wichita; 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
