Clay Smith

Clay J. Smith, 87, formerly of Cambridge, died March 5, 2002, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Cambridge Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.

Memorials have been established with the Cambridge Presbyterian Church and Winfield Rest Haven. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Smith was born Sept. 11, 1914, in Cambridge, to Christina (Wilson) and Clay Smith. He was raised and educated in Cambridge and graduated from Southwestern College in 1935. While in college he was a baseball player, wrestler and track athlete.

After college he played baseball in the minor leagues. Two years later he moved to the major leagues and played for the Cleveland Indians and later the Detroit Tigers. During the 1940 World Series, he pitched for the Tigers against the Cincinnati Reds. He was the second graduate of the National Baseball Conference in Wichita to play for the majors.

On Feb. 18, 1939, he married Ena Eldearia Rymph in Miami, Okla. They made their home on a farm north of Cambridge where Smith farmed and ranched. He was also a rural letter carrier for many years. In 1985 he retired from farming.

In January 2000 he was inducted into the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Southwestern College Athletic Hall of Fame.

Smith was a member of the Cambridge Presbyterian Church, Burden Masonic Lodge, Rural Letter Carriers Association and Major League Baseball Players Alumni.

His wife died Feb. 3, 2002.

Survivors include two sons, Floyd Smith, Cambridge, and Alan Smith, Era, Texas; a daughter, Kay Hull, Cambridge; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mary Lofton

UDALL – Mary Lofton, 89, of Udall, died March 4, 2002, at her home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Udall United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Udall Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 8 p.m. Friday.

A memorial has been established with the Udall United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Lofton was born July 31, 1912, in Douglass County, Mo., to Rosetta (Mason) and Oliver Hicks. When she was a young girl, the family moved to the Stillwater, Okla., area.

On Dec. 13, 1930, she married Everett Vern Lofton of Carney, Okla., and they made their first home in Perkins, Okla. They moved to a farm near Mulvane in 1942, to the Udall area in 1944 and to Udall in 1959.

Lofton was a member of the Udall United Methodist Church and Udall Senior Citizens.

Survivors include a son, Max Lofton, Towanda; three daughters, Maxine Howell, Oceanside, Calif., Mary Ruth Booth, Independence, Mo., and Margaret Mantz, Newkirk, Okla.; four sisters, Lydia Sile, Inis Sigle, Amanda Sadler and Ida Hopkins, all of Oklahoma; 19 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband, a son, Glendle L. Lofton, and a daughter, Lodean Klein, preceded her in death.

Hazel Sanborn

MOUNT VERNON, Texas – Hazel Bertha Sanborn, 86, formerly of Cedar Vale and Sedan, died March 1, 2002, in Mount Vernon.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Sedan, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. David W. Barnes Funeral Home, Sedan, is in charge of arrangements.

Friends may call at Ackarman Chapel until 9 this evening and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the First Baptist Church through the funeral home.

Sanborn was born Jan. 2, 1916, at Paragould, Ark., to David E. and Bertha (Elliott) Wilcoxon. When she was a child, the family moved to Chautauqua County.

On Jan. 26, 1934, she married Kyle Sanborn in Winfield. They lived in rural Chautauqua County, Caney, Cedar Vale and Sedan. She was employed at Hays Hospital in Cedar Vale for 17 years.

Her husband died in September 1985.

Sanborn moved from Sedan to Mount Vernon three years ago.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sedan.

Survivors include a daughter, Gloria McConaghy, Mount Vernon; a son, Larry Sanborn, Enid, Okla.; a sister, Oretha McGlasson, Arkansas City; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A son, Darrel Boyd Sanborn, preceded her in death.

Dennie Irvin

ARKANSAS CITY – Dennie Lee Irvin, 44, of Arkansas City, died March 7, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel.

A memorial has been established with Heredity-Hemochromatosis Research, c/o Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.

Irvin was born June 27, 1957, in Oklahoma to Charlie W. and Colleen (Clark) Irvin.

On April 27, 2001, he married JoAnn Burgstrand in Newkirk.

Irvin had been employed in sheet metal work for both Cessna and Boeing.

He was a member of the Apostolic Church of Winfield.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Irvin, Arkansas City; his mother, Colleen Irvin, and a sister, Linda Kerr, both of Winfield; and four brothers, Ronnie Irvin, Rose Hill, Charles and Donnie Irvin, both of Winfield, and Larry Irvin, Fort Smith, Ark.

Disie Ramsey

SEDAN – Disie L. Ramsey, 90, formerly of Cedar Vale, died March 7, 2002, at Pleasant Valley Manor, Sedan.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Wheeler Funeral Home, Cedar Vale, with burial in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday

Memorial contributions may be made to any charity.

Ramsey was born Jan. 21, 1912, in Madison County, Okla., to John Wesley and Mary Jane (Ellis) Peer. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, John Thompson, in Freeport.

While attending business school in Wichita, she met and later married Raymond Ramsey on Dec. 24, 1931. They lived in Wichita before moving to Cedar Vale in 1942. He preceded her in death in 1985.

Ramsey was a member of the Cedar Vale United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star and several clubs.

Survivors include a son, Dale Ramsey, Cedar Vale, and a sister, LaRue Thiel, Amarillo, Texas.

Noma Curtis

UDALL – Noma M. Curtis, 94, of Udall, died March 5, 2002, at her home.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Udall Congregational Church. Burial will be in Eden Cemetery at Milton.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service, Winfield, from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials have been established with the Udall Congregational Church and Udall First Responders. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Curtis was born Aug. 27, 1907, in Anness, to Herbert Seymour and Elsie Isabel (Deck) Gable. When she was nine, the family moved to Wichita where she attended school.

In 1926 she married Edgar Phillips in Los Angeles. She worked in Los Angeles restaurants and was employed by B.F. Goodrich there during World War II. In 1943 they moved to Wichita, and she worked at Beech Aircraft. Her husband died in 1951.

She then worked at Cudahay Meat Packers and later at Boeing Aircraft.

In 1953 she married William “Bill” Curtis in Arkansas. They farmed near Udall and later spent several winters in Texas and Arizona. He died in 1989.

Curtis was a member of the Udall Congregational Church and Udall Senior Citizens.

Survivors include a stepson, Harry Curtis, Bellflower, Calif.; and a niece, Darlene Nelson, Udall.

Margaret Woolley

LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. – Margaret Carolyn Woolley, 92, formerly of Winfield and Oxford, died Feb. 20, 2002, at John Knox Care Center in Lee's Summit.

Services will be at 10 a.m. March 19 in Mount Vernon Cemetery near Winfield. Cremation has taken place.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Oxford United Methodist Church.

Woolley was born Dec. 9, 1909, in Terre Haute, Ind., to John and Louise Stout. In 1918 she moved to Winfield.

On Oct. 15, 1932, she married Howard Woolley, and they lived in the Winfield and Oxford areas. He died in 1976.

Woolley had worked as a bookkeeper and secretary at the State Bank in Winfield, Oxford Bank, Oxford United Methodist Church and Oxford school district.

In 1982 she moved to Missouri to be closer to her daughter and her family.

Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Kirby, Fayette, Mo.; a sister, Kathryn Overstreet, Oceanside, Calif.; and two granddaughters.

Dorothy Hopkins

Dorothy M. Hopkins, 79, of Winfield, died March 5, 2002, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 8 to 9 a.m. Monday.

A memorial has been established with Queen City Chapter 138, Order of the Eastern Star.

Hopkins was born March 26, 1922, at Fall River, to William J. and Odessa D. (Taggert) Garriott. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from high school here in 1940.

On Dec. 4, 1943, she married James H. Hopkins in Newkirk. She was a clerk and typist at Binney & Smith for 17 years before retiring in 1984. Her husband died July 2, 1990.

Hopkins was a member of the First Christian Church, Order of the Eastern Star and White Shrine of Jerusalem in Arkansas City.

Survivors include a son, William H. Hopkins, Mira Loma, Calif., and two grandchildren.
