Margie Caldwell
EL DORADO – Margie L. Caldwell, 89, of El Dorado, died March 7, 2002, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Atlanta Christian Church with burial in Atlanta Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the American Diabetes Association and the Atlanta Christian Church. Contributions can be made through Carlson Funeral Home.
Caldwell was born Dec. 19, 1912, at Caddo, Okla., to A.A. and Minnie (Plimons) Simpson.
On Nov. 16, 1929, she married William Claude Caldwell and was a homemaker. After living in Oklahoma and Texas, the Caldwells moved to Atlanta in 1968. Her husband died Jan. 7, 1991.
She moved to El Dorado in June 2000.
Caldwell was a member of the Atlanta Christian Church.
Survivors include a son, William Alfred Caldwell, Blackwell; two daughters, Naomi Wright, Borger, Texas, and Ramona Campbell, El Dorado; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
Mae Woods
Mae L. Woods, 93, of Winfield, died March 9, 2002, at Winfield Rest Haven.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery
in Arkansas City.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 5.
A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church.
Woods was born May 6, 1908, northeast of Arkansas City, to Altha E. (Kirkpatrick) and Charles Wright. She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1927, from Arkansas City Junior College in 1929 and from Pittsburg State Teachers College in 1931.
She taught school in rural Cowley County for four years and in other Kansas rural schools for nine years.
On May 29, 1938, she married Leonard L. Woods in Fairplay, Mo. He died Sept. 16, 1978.
Woods was a member of the Kansas Retired Teachers of Arkansas City, the TGIF Club and the Mizpah Class and Grace Raymond Circle of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Robert Woods, Indiana, Pa.; a daughter, Dorothy Foran, Wilson; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Betty Blake
PONCA CITY – Services for Betty Jeanne Blake were held at 11 a.m. March 7, 2002, in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery
in Ponca City. Pastor Gale Rider officiated.
Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City, was in charge of arrangements.
Erma Keely
Erma May Keely, 86, of Winfield, died March 10, 2002, at Winfield Rest Haven.
A celebration of life and remembrances for her family and friends will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the senior center at Baden Square. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Winfield Municipal Band, Winfield Friendship Meals or any charity.
Keely was born May 5, 1915, to Mary (Quier) and Elmore Rae James and spent her early childhood and school years in the Burden-New Salem area.
On Nov. 24, 1932, she married Lester Holt. He died Jan. 6, 1933.
She married Paul E. Keely on Feb. 3, 1934, and they were married almost 57 years before his death Dec. 20, 1990.
During the first 15 years of their marriage, the couple traveled throughout the United States because of his work with oil companies. They returned to farm in the Rock area in 1949 and moved to Udall in 1962. They retired and moved to Winfield in the early 1980s.
A homemaker, Keely also worked part time as a sales clerk at J.C. Penney.
Survivors include a son, Jim Keely, Covington, Ga.; two daughters, JoAnn Kemp, Topeka, and Sarah Setzkorn, Rock; two brothers, Walter James, Battleground, Wash., and Cecil James, Medford, Ore.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Wilma Thompson
ROCK – Wilma Arlene Thompson, 75, of Rock, died March 9, 2002, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.
Services will be at 2 p.m Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Cambridge Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 tonight. The family will greet visitors from 7 to 8.
A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church youth group in Burden. Contributions may be made at the church or funeral home.
Thompson was born July 9, 1926, in Eureka, to Ruth (Wiggins) and James A. Cannon. She was raised and educated in Greenwood County and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1944. She later attended Emporia Beauty College and received a certificate.
On Oct. 12, 1946, she married Edgar R. “Jack” Thompson in Wichita. They lived in Wichita for a short time before moving to Borger, Texas, in 1947. In 1962 they returned to Wichita and moved to a farm in Rock in 1966. A homemaker, Thompson lived on the farm until recently.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Burden where she was active with the youth groups. She was also a member of the Progress Club, garden club and senior citizens, all of Atlanta.
A son, Joel L. Thompson, died in 1975.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Thompson, Rock; a son, Barry Thompson, Winfield; a daughter, Janell Haddock, Shawnee, Okla.; a brother, John Cannon, Pawhuska, Okla.; four grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Clay Smith
Services for Clay J. Smith were held at 1 p.m. March 8, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. John Paulin officiated. Burial was in Cambridge Cemetery.
Charmaine Paulin sang “Amazing Grace” and was also the organist.
Honorary casket bearers were Herb Brunton, Armand Hillier, Charles Kielhorn, John Kielhorn, Barney Lundy, Bob Lundy, Neil Watt and Randall Watt.
Casket bearers were Smith's grandsons, David Hull, Neil Hull, Sam Ives, Aaron Smith, Alan Smith Jr. and Warren Smith.
Memorials have been established with the Cambridge Presbyterian Church and Winfield Rest Haven.
Mary Lofton
UDALL – Services for Mary Lofton were held at 10:30 a.m. March 9, 2002, at the Udall United Methodist Church. The Rev. Cathy Holley officiated. Burial was in Udall Cemetery.
Cora Mettling was the pianist. Music included “In the Garden” and “The Church in the Wildwood,” performed by Sandy Klein and Cory Klaker.
Casket bearers were Lofton's grandsons, Jerry Klein, David Lofton and Bryan, Jeffrey, Kevin and Wesley Mantz.
A memorial has been established with the church.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Roberta VanFleet
Roberta Clarice VanFleet, 74, homemaker, of 2420 Vietnam War Memorial Drive, Winfield, died March 7, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Wilmot Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight. The family will greet visitors from 6 to 8.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas Veterans Home Alzheimer's Unit. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
VanFleet was born March 12, 1927, in Wellington, to Wilma J. (Smith) and John Worden. She was raised in Wellington and as a teenager moved with her family to Wilmot. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1945. Following graduation, she was employed at Seymour Packing Co. in Winfield.
On Nov. 29, 1947, she married Donald E. VanFleet in Winfield. They resided in Winfield throughout their marriage except for living in El Dorado from 1955 to 1957.
Survivors include her husband, Donald E. VanFleet, two sons, Robert VanFleet and Roger VanFleet, and a daughter, Susan Humbert, all of Winfield; a sister, Ada Hinson, Bertrand, Neb.; five grandchildren; and two friends, Missy Hansen and Sherry Spielman.
Dorothy Hopkins
Services for Dorothy M. Hopkins were held at 10 a.m. March 11, 2002, in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Music included “Beyond the Sunset” and “Wind Beneath My Wings.”
A memorial has been established with Queen City Chapter 138 Order of Eastern Star.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Disie Ramsey
CEDAR VALE – Services for Disie L. Ramsey were held at 11 a.m. March 11, 2002, at Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale. The Rev. Don Harper officiated. Burial was in Cedar Vale Cemetery.
Shirley Brown was the organist, and Mark Johnson was the vocalist.
Casket bearers were Bill Wall, Ronnie Rogers, Bob Bailey, Mickey Myers, J.D. Sanders and Donnie Coe.
Memorial contributions may be made to any charity.
