Dennie Irvin

Services for Dennie Lee Irvin were held at 11 a.m. March 11, 2002, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Revs. Mark McCarville and Robert Downey officiated.

Music performed by Larry Irvin included “Memories of Home,” “You Can't Run a Tab with the Man Upstairs” and “Eternity's Forever and Forever's a Long Time.”

Linda G. Kerr recited a poem, “Dennie.”

Honorary casket bearers were Ronnie, Donnie, Charles and Larry Irvin.

Casket bearers were Bradley, Mark, Carey and Jeffrey Irvin, Howard Clark and Kent Archer.

Memorials are requested to Heredity-Hemochromotosis Research, c/o the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.

Beatrice DeVore

ARKANSAS CITY – Beatrice Darlene “Bea” DeVore, 70, of Arkansas City, died March 8, 2002, at her home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church.

Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Walnut Valley Quilt Guild, Cowley County Historical Society's special fund or the First United Methodist Church Stained Glass Fund.

DeVore was born April 27, 1931, in Isabel, to Gladys (Isenhart) and Melvin C. Roessler. She lived in Norwich, Kingman and Winfield during her early years and graduated from Winfield High School in 1949.

On May 6, 1951, she married Jasper DeVore and lived on a farm east of Arkansas City. An active partner in the success of the DeVore Hog Farm, she was also employed by L.G. Construction Co. and the Gordon-Piatt Energy Group.

DeVore was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was also involved in Cameron 4-H Club, the Kansas State University Extension Service, the Pork Producer Council's Women's Auxiliary, the Republican Party, the Red Cross and the Walnut Valley Quilt Guild.

She and her husband were part of the initial Farm Bureau Japanese Farm Trainee Program in Kansas and hosted over 20 farming students from 1968 to 1979.

In retirement DeVore studied the history of Cowley County. She volunteered and later worked for the Cherokee Strip Living History Museum. She recently developed a customized presentation that incorporated the personal histories of those in the audience based on her study of Cowley County families. She was also spearheading a project to record the stories of people in the local farming and ranching community.

Her husband, Jasper DeVore, and a son, John Martin DeVore, preceded her in death.

Survivors include four daughters, Carol Black, Arkansas City, Nancy DeVore, Arlington, Va., Sara Prothe, Overland Park, and Marjorie Miller, Cambridge; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Eulalia Greer

Eulalia Greer, 79, of Winfield, died March 9, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center, Arkansas City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Second Baptist Church.

Greer was born July 8, 1922, in Caldwell, Texas, to Lula (Lawrence) and Ben Wallace. In 1936 the family moved to Winfield.

In 1942 she married Raleigh Greer, and they made their home in Winfield. A homemaker, Greer was a member of the Second Baptist Church and active in the choir and missionary society.

Survivors include her husband, Raleigh Greer, Topeka veterans hospital; three sons, Gary Greer and Ronald Greer, both of Winfield, and Richard Greer, East St. Louis, Ill.; two daughters, Joan Baptista, Junction City, and Kimberly Duru, Winfield; four sisters, Jewel Wallace, Vera King Harris and Marjorie Cochran, all of Winfield, and Madge Austin, East St. Louis, Ill.; two brothers, Eugene Wallace, Kansas City, Mo., and Cecil Wallace, Leavenworth; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

William Stough

DEXTER – William Carl Stough, 77, of Dexter, died March 10, 2002, at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Dexter Christian Church. The Rev. Norman Reeves will officiate. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Dexter Christian Church. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral home.

Stough was born Oct. 28, 1924, in Potwin, to Catherine M. (Thornbrugh) and Peter W. Stough. He was raised and educated near Branson, Mo.

During World War II, he served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific.

On March 18, 1996, Stough married his longtime companion, Laura B. Tousley-Roberts, in Winfield. They made their home in Dexter.

An electrician for Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita for 33 years, Stough was a member of the Dexter Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Stough, Dexter; two sons, Gordon Stough, Alpena, Ark., and Michael Stough, Nixa, Mo.; four daughters, Kathy Clayton, Cordele, Ga., Sherry Wilson, Mariam, Ark., Michelle Atkinson, Nixa, Mo., and Suzanne Ioegel, Wichita; two stepdaughters, Debbie Minor and Darla Patton, both of Dexter; a brother, Robert St. Clair, Ephrata, Wash.; a sister, Marie Yaeger; 30 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Noma Curtis

UDALL – Services for Noma M. Curtis were held at 1 p.m. March 11, 2002, at the Udall Congregational Church. Pastor Tony Caffalette officiated. Burial was in Milton Cemetery.

Cora Mettling was the organist. Ellen Floyd performed “He Was Thinking of Me,” and the congregation sang “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.”

Honorary casket bearers were Ron Nelson, James Williams and Bill and Denny Willis.

Casket bearers were Aaron, Allen and Sonny Cooper and Rocky, Rodney and Roger Gregory.

Memorials have been established with the Udall Congregational Church and the Udall First Responders.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Wilma Thompson

Services for Wilma Arlene Thompson were held at 2 p.m. March 12, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Revs. Ryan Carpenter and Art Hays officiated. Burial was in Cambridge Cemetery.

Music was “Thank You” and “Amazing Grace,” performed by Rex Beeney.

Honorary casket bearers were Carrol Harris and Don Meyer.

Casket bearers were Jerry Bryan, Steve Cannon, Rick Fraley, James and Lewis Haddock, Dwain Lauppe and Richard Mackey.

A memorial has been established with the Burden First Baptist Church Youth Group.

Roberta Van Fleet

Services for Roberta Clarice Van Fleet were held at 10:30 a.m. March 12, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Suzanne Layne officiated. Burial was in Wilmot Cemetery.

Music included “Amazing Grace” performed by Leanne Rimes, “Wind Beneath My Wings” performed by Bette Midler, and “I'm Movin' On” performed by Rascal Flatts.

Honorary casket bearers were Jerry Crow, Ashton Humbert and Jason, Kassie and Ryan Van Fleet.

Casket bearers were John Crow, Brett and Dennis Hinson, Steve Klein and Allan, Cory, Gary and Toby Nation.

A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Unit at the Kansas Veterans Home.

Beatrice DeVore

ARKANSAS CITY – Services for Beatrice D. “Bea” DeVore were held at 10 a.m. March 14, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Lance Carrithers officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery at Winfield.

Music included “Amazing Grace” by Gail DeVore, violin; Judy Ramsey, organ; and Jim Lindsay, bagpipe.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Cowley County Historical Society Special Fund, First United Methodist Church Stained Glass Fund or Walnut Valley Quilt Guild.

Survivors include her daughters, Carol Black, Arkansas City, Gail DeVore, Denver, Nancy DeVore, Arlington, Va., and Sara Prothe, Overland Park; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Hawks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mae Woods

Services for Mae L. Woods were held at at 10:30 a.m. March 13, 2002, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Fred Houston officiated. Burial was in Parker Cemetery, Arkansas City.

Martin Rude was the vocalist, and Laurabelle Haines was the organist.

Casket bearers were Roger Lungren, Merlin Reeves, Larry Schuster, Jim Redington, Richard Tredway and Randall Watt.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church.

Harold Gibson

STILLWATER – Harold L. Gibson, 79, of Stillwater, died March 11, 2002, at his home.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. March 14 at the First Christian Church. The Revs. Bill Inglish and Rick Hendricks officiated. Burial was in Atlanta Cemetery. Casket bearers were grandsons Matt, Jeremy, Scott and Jim Gibson, along with family friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or the First Christian Church through Strode Funeral Home, P.O. Box 487, Stillwater, OK 74076.

Gibson was born April 30, 1922, near Douglass, to Mary Elizabeth (Markley) and Harold Alva Gibson. Her mother died when he was an infant, so he spent his early years with his aunt and uncle, Josie and Mayhew Markley.

Gibson graduated from Atlanta High School. There he met Marilyn Wilson, whom he married June 25, 1944, while on military leave.

During World War II Gibson served with the 106th Infantry Division as an officer. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner.

In 1947 Gibson graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in civil engineering. He was county engineer for Cowley County and city engineer for Wellington, Winfield and Enid, Okla. He was also co-owner of Hangen-Gibson Lumber Co. and Gibson Readi-Mix Concrete Co. At the time of his retirement, Gibson was director of operations for the City of Stillwater.

He was active in professional engineering societies in Kansas and Oklahoma and a longtime member of the First Christian Church, Lions Club, American Legion, American Ex-POWs and Cowboy Country Sams Travel Club. He held offices in many of the organizations and also served as school board president in Wellington.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Gibson, Stillwater; four sons, Mike Gibson, Paola, John Gibson, Jacksonville, Fla., Tom Gibson, Tulsa, Okla., and Bill Gibson, Los Alamos, N.M.; his stepmother, Lucy Gibson; and four grandchildren.
