Victor Hidde

HUTCHINSON – Victor O. Hidde, 79, of Hutchinson, formerly of Winfield, died March 12, 2002, at Hutchinson Hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Southern Baptist Church. The Rev. Ray E. Kempel will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery at Great Bend. An honor guard from Fort Riley will provide military rites.

Friends may call at Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, until 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the First Southern Baptist Church Building Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Hidde was born April 20, 1922, in New London, Wis., to Myrtle (Learman) and Oscar William Hidde.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

On Nov. 10, 1943, he married Ione Cain in Coffeyville.

Hidde was a transporter and purchaser for Permian Oil Corp. He retired in 1988 and moved to Hutchinson from Winfield in 1989. There he worked as a deliveryman for Don's Custom Floral.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Ione Hidde, Hutchinson; two sons, Jerry Hidde, Hutchinson, and Rocky Hidde, Winfield; two daughters, Susan Scheck, Casper, Wyo., and Donna William, Bunker Hill; four brothers, Glen, Harold, Alfred and Mel Hidde, all of New London, Wis.; three sisters, Dorothy Raper, Powderly, Texas, Alice Jonley, Weyauwega, Wis., and Hilda Fronczak, New London, Wis.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Sigmund Smith

SAN DIEGO – Sigmund L. Smith, 89, of San Diego, died March 6, 2002, at Evergreen Hospital in San Diego.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Floral Cemetery, northeast of Winfield.

A register can be signed until 5 today at Miles Funeral Service.

Smith was born Nov. 1, 1912, in Denver, to Rowena C. and William F. Brusseau. He was raised and educated in Denver and attended the University of Colorado for a year. In 1939 he received a bachelor‘s degree in metallurgy engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in Golden.

On April 18, 1942, he married Zelda Ilene Sturm of Winfield.

After receiving a master's degree in 1947, he worked in the mining industry and established smelters for about two years. He then taught at the Colorado School of Mines and coached the ice hockey team for 11 years.

Smith taught at the College of Mines and the University of Arizona in Tucson for 23 years. During his career, he wrote and published handbooks and articles such as the “Handbook for Engineers,” “Ore Microscopy” and “Angstro Structures.” He held the title of professor emeritus at the University of Arizona.

After his retirement, he did consulting work and volunteered with the public schools and taught classes for the blind.

Smith was involved in Sigma Nu, the honorary Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi, and the alumni association of the Colorado School of Mines and the Mining Institute of America.

Survivors include his wife, Zelda Smith, San Diego, and the Sturm families of the Winfield area.

John Cummings

MCPHERSON – John Marshall Cummings, 89, of McPherson, formerly of Severy, died March 13, 2002, at The Cedars nursing center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Severy Church of the Nazarene. Pastor Terry Buchanan will officiate. Burial will be in South Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Cummings was born May 31, 1912, in Helena, Okla., to Millie Belle (Wright) and John Edward Cummings. He attended White Hall Rural School and graduated from Fall River High School.

On Oct. 15, 1941, he married Doris Permelia Templer in Eureka. She died Nov. 8, 2000.

A lifetime resident of Elk and Greenwood counties, Cummings was a longtime farmer.

He was a member of the Farm Bureau Board of Directors and served as Farm Bureau president for three years. He served on the school boards in Elk and Greenwood counties and was a member of the senior citizens board in Severy. He was also a longtime member of the Severy Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Cummings, McPherson, Don Cummings, Emporia, and Allen Cummings, Howard; two daughters, Carolyn Hughes, California, Mo., and Rita Nienstedt, Fort Scott; a brother, Bill Cummings, Eureka; a sister, Mary Thompson, Wichita; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Medrith Whitney

DOUGLASS – Medrith E. Whitney, 72, retired Wesley Medical Center registered nurse, died March 14, 2002.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Douglass United Methodist Church.

Friends may call at Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home until 8 this evening and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

A memorial has been established with the Douglass United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Kutz, Douglass, and Beth Strothman, Wellington; five grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Marilyn Richardson

BELLE PLAINE – Marilyn Jean Richardson, 62, of Belle Plaine, died March 13, 2002, at her daughter's home in Newton.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Belle Plaine United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Belle Plaine Cemetery. Hatfield-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Belle Plaine schools.

Richardson was born Sept. 16, 1939, in Wichita, to Dorothy A. (Scott) and Merle F. Richardson.

On June 23, 1956, she married Bobby Dean Richardson in Belle Plaine.

A cook in the Belle Plaine school system for 20 years, she retired in 2001.

Survivors include her husband, Bob Richardson, Belle Plaine; a son, Bobby Richardson Jr., Wellington; three daughters, Jackie Richardson and Jeanne Richardson, both of Belle Plaine, and Becky Mavity, Newton; her father, Merle Russell, and a brother, Kenneth Russell, both of Dexter; four sisters, Jeanette Russell, Grass Valley, Calif., Annette Rutherford, North San Juan, Calif., Carol Williamson, Gilmer, Texas, and Lettye Johnston, Belle Plaine; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Helen Baker

Helen B. Baker, 89, of Winfield, passed away Friday at Cumbernauld Village.

Graveside services are set for 3 p.m. Monday at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Home from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

A memorial has been established with Grouse Valley manor in Dexter.

Baker was born April 8, 1912 on a farm northwest of Winfield. She was the daughter of Ray M. and Leora J. (Waite) Berry. She was raised north of Akron in the Walnut Valley and attended grade school at Valley Center School. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1931.

On Jan. 12, 1941, she was married to Roy F. Baker. The couple farmed for a time and ran three grocery stores in New Salem, Burden and Moline. She was head bookkeeper at the Cowley County Courthouse.

She and her husband had many rental properties and also took care of elderly people in the community. Mr. Baker preceded her in death on Dec. 20, 1985.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Her hobbies included crafts and gardening.

Survivors include a son, Ronald Baker, Winfield; two sisters, Leona Snyder, Burden, Janie Snell, Winfield; and two granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant children and her twin brothers, Raymond and Robert Berry.

Eulalia Greer

Services for Eulalia Greer were held at 10:30 a.m. March 15 in the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Earnest McClure officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

The Rev. Lacy Johnson gave the eulogy. Patricia Crawford gave the resolution.

Marcia Redmon was the vocalist.

Honorary casket bearers were Shadrach Shankton, Luke Loud, Wendell Smith and Isaac Austin Sr.

Casket bearers were Le Baptista II, Jeremy Baptista, Tyson Reynolds, Christopher Gardenhire, Steve Cochran and Larry McPherson.

A memorial has been established with the Second Baptist Church.

Karen Hayzlett

ELKHART – Karen D. Hayzlett, 61, of Elkhart, died March 16, 2002, at Morton County Hospital.

Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Rolla United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Richfield Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Harrell Funeral Home in Elkhart.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Hayzlett was born Sept. 4, 1940, in Eureka, to Martha Ione (Morgan) and Sherman Wayne Lewis. She graduated from Hamilton High School in 1958 and attended Wichita Business College.

On Dec. 2, 1977, she married Julius “Dean” Hayzlett in Syracuse. They had lived in Elkhart for the past three years.

A homemaker, Hayzlett worked at the Hamilton County Rest Home for several years.

She was a member of the Syracuse United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Julius “Dean” Hayzlett, Elkhart; two sons, Bill McManess, Dodge City, and John McManess, Syracuse; four daughters, Christy Kemp, Dexter, Kim Schmidt, Syracuse, Carla Beasley, Ingalls, and Tish Nielsen, Denver, Colo.; two stepsons, Kenny Hayzlett, Wichita, and Rodney Hayzlett, Joplin, Mo., three stepdaughters, Debbie Blair, Liberal, Lora Schiffelbein, Topeka, and Judy Nielsen, Syracuse; five brothers, Keith Lewis, Rolla, Kenneth Lewis, Toronto, Jack Lewis, Wichita, Jerry Lewis, Enid, Okla., and Larry Lewis, Alva, Okla.; three sisters, Katherine Condee, Suffolk, Va., Sylvia Billings, Wilber, Neb., and Rachael Stewart, Friend; 27 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Francis Hunt

Francis M. Hunt, 86, of Winfield, died March 16, 2002, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church. A private inurnment service will be held in Memorial Gardens.

Memorials are requested to the First United Methodist Church, Winfield Rest Haven, William Newton Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit or the charity of the donor's choice.

Hunt was born July 17, 1915, in Richmond, Mo., to Myrtle (Park) and Melvin Hunt. He graduated from Richmond High School in 1933.

On Oct. 1, 1938, he married Emily Bryant of Richmond, Mo.

In 1936 Hunt opened his first jewelry store in Hamilton, Mo. In 1950 he moved to Winfield and for 22 years owned and operated Hunt's Jewelry Store.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Emily Hunt, Winfield; a son, Terry Hunt, Lexington, Ky.; a sister, Ila See, Winfield; and a grandson.
