Ralph Kimzey

LONGTON – Ralph Andrew Kimzey, 94, longtime resident of rural Longton, died March 18, 2002, at Mercy Hospital, Independence.

Services were at 2 p.m. March 20 at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Ted Davis officiated. Burial was in Longton Cemetery.

Joan Baughman was the pianist. Beth Green, Sandra Wimbish and Greg Kimzey sang “When I've Gone the Last Mile of the Way” and “In the Garden,” accompanied by Gail Kimzey. The congregation sang “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.”

Casket bearers were Marland Cox, Charlie Hadlock, Kirk Hayden, Greg Kimzey, Joe Kimzey, Perry Russell, Curtis Strasburg and David Strasburg.

Memorials were established with the First Baptist Church and Longton Senior Center. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard.

Kimzey was born Aug. 7, 1907, south of Longton, to Ada Mae (Berry) and Lum D. Kimzey. He attended the Pleasant Hill school and earned his General Equivalency Degree later in life.

On April 25, 1934, he married Vada Pearl Towery in Bolton. They farmed and ranched in the Cove community south of Longton throughout their marriage.

Kimzey served 28 years as Elk County director for the Federal Land Bank. A longtime member of the Elk County Farm Bureau, he served as director at various times. He served 20 years on the Longton school board and earlier on the Cove school board.

He was a member of the Longton Free Fair Board, an agricultural representative to the Elk County Extension Council, a 4-H community leader and a member of the Soil Conservation Board.

Kimzey was instrumental in establishing the Longton Senior Center and was a member of the Longton Co-op. He also served as a director on the rural water board.

An ordained deacon of the First Baptist Church, Kimzey was also a member of the Gideons. He served many years as Sunday school superintendent at the Baptist church and the Cove Community Sunday School.

His wife, Vada Kimzey, and a son, David Kimzey, preceded him in death.

Survivors include five daughters, Ruth Murphy, Austin, Colo., Faith Huddle and Maradean Phinney, both of Independence, Marguerite Rasmussen, Pratt, and Janet Hadlock, Longton; a son, Kevin Kimzey, Elk City; a foster sister, Ada Banning, Fredonia; 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Norman Thompson

GREAT BEND – Norman Lewis Thompson, 85, of Great Bend, died March 18, 2002, at Integrated Health Services, Great Bend.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Hal Staats will officiate. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery.

Friends may call at Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Road, until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, the American Heart Association or the First Presbyterian Church.

Thompson was born Nov. 11, 1916, at Chockie, Okla., to Minnie (Shipman) and Mack Thompson.

On March 26, 1938, he married Lelia Adele Turner in Kiowa, Okla.

Thompson was an oil field rig driller and tool pusher for Garvey Drilling and Pickrell Drilling Co. After retirement, he worked as a courier for Bank of America.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Lelia Thompson, Great Bend; two sons, Curtis Thompson, Sterling, and David Thompson, Louisville, Ky.; two daughters, Betty Anderson, Winfield, and Karen Barefield, Minneapolis, Kan.; a brother, James Thompson, and three sisters, Magdaline Kiedaisch, Nora O'Toole and Ruth Newberry, all of Oklahoma; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

G.D. McSpadden

Services for G.D. McSpadden were held at 2 p.m. March 19, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church. Diane Massey officiated, and June Vasey was the organist. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Honorary casket bearers were Fred and Helen Padden, Dick and Jean Warren, B.A. Nickel, Carl Calvert, Ray Parsons, Jim Rogers, Marty King, Helen Storbeck and Emily Hunt.

Casket bearers were Dean, Tom, Steve, Brian and Michael McSpadden and Jeff Fawcett.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Jane Deatrick

HERINGTON – Mary Jane Deatrick, 101, of Herington, died March 19, 2002, at the Lutheran home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Marion Cemetery. The Rev. Edward J. Thompson will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at Donahue Funeral Home, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, KS 67449-3038.

Memorials have been established with the Herington United Methodist and First Presbyterian churches. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Deatrick was born Sept. 19, 1900, in Glasgow, Scotland, to Mary Ann (McQuilkin) and James Blackim. The family came to the United States on March 10, 1911, and made their home in Marion. She graduated from Marion High School in 1921, taught school in Marion County for four years, then worked in the Marion County Courthouse as deputy to the county superintendent of schools for five years.

On Aug. 25, 1935, she married Vern L. Deatrick in Salina. He died Jan. 1, 1987.

A resident of Herington since 1935, Deatrick was a homemaker. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, its women's circle and United Methodist Women.

She was a charter member and past president of Chapter FC of P.E.O. and the Herington Women's Club and a 50-year member of the Esther Chapter 96 Order of Eastern Star. She had worked with Rainbow for Girls, and she and her husband were honored with the Grand Cross of Colors by the state Rainbow for Girls.

A son, David Blackim Deatrick, died in infancy.

Survivors include four nephews, including Allen Hein, Winfield.

Mabel Duncan

CEDAR VALE – Mabel Irene Duncan, 91, of Cedar Vale, died March 19, 2002, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.

Services were at 2 p.m. March 21 in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Cedar Vale Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, P.O. Box 7, Sedan, KS 67361.

Duncan was born Aug. 20, 1910, in Chanute, to Christine (Decker) and Robert A. Howell. The family moved to Cedar Vale where she attended school.

On Aug. 29, 1929, she married John Wesley Duncan in Cedar Vale where they resided. He died June 8, 1988.

Duncan worked in the medical field for many years, starting at Hayes Hospital in Cedar Vale, then at Meek and Stinses Clinic in Arkansas City, Arkansas City Memorial Hospital and later for Dr. Morton.

She was a member of the Cedar Vale Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Cecil Duncan, Cedar Vale; three daughters, Christine Wilmeth, Wichita, Nina Archer, Arkansas City, and Nellie McGathy, Cedar Vale; 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

Francis Hunt

Memorial services for Francis M. Hunt were held March 20, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Allen Pollen and the Rev. Fred Houston officiated. Inurnment was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Arkansas City.

Kent Miller, accompanied by Laura Belle Haines, sang “The Lord's Prayer” and “Hymn of Promise.”

Honorary casket bearers were John Adams, Larry Cunningham and members of his bridge club.

Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church, William Newton Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit and Winfield Rest Haven.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Beulah Whelchel

Services for Beulah “Bee” Whelchel were held at 10 a.m. March 20, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Warren Traynor officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Music included a recording of Tennessee Ernie Ford singing “Whispering Hope.”

Ray Barbour

GEUDA SPRINGS – Ray Barbour, 64, of Geuda Springs, died March 20, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center, Arkansas City.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City. The Rev. David Lemke will officiate. Burial will be in Geuda Springs Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Geuda Springs Community Church and the Geuda Springs Community Building. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Barbour was born May 17, 1937, in Wellington, to Sybil Mae (Bland) and Lawrence Leo Barbour. He was raised in the Sumner County area and graduated from Geuda Springs High School in 1956. Following high school, he worked in construction and in the oil fields.

On Jan. 11, 1957, he married Liona Sue Casement in Wellington. They lived in Attica for three years, and he worked as a welder. In 1960 they moved to Geuda Springs. Barbour worked at Mauer Neuer, Wonderlich Gas Co. and Boeing Aircraft Co. before starting his own business, Barbour Backhoe and Ditching Service, in 1969.

Barbour served on the school board and city council and was instrumental in getting a new water system, sewer system, community building and, most recently, a new firehouse for Geuda Springs.

Survivors include his wife, Liona Barbour, Geuda Springs; two sons, Casey Barbour and Kirby Barbour, both of Arkansas City; two daughters, Kay Ann Willson, Udall, and Connie Byers, Arkansas City; his mother, Sybil Kuttler, a brother, Raymond Barbour, and a sister, JoAnne Caldwell, all of Pueblo, Colo.; his stepmother, Violet Barbour, South Haven; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Gale Bunner

A vigil and Rosary service for Gale J. Bunner was held at 7 p.m. March 20, 2002, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. March 21 at Holy Name Catholic Church. The Rev. Bernard Gorges officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Randolph, Mass.

Gretta Palsmeier was the organist, and Gemma Palsmeier was the vocalist.

Casket bearers were Gene and Derryl Rising, Gaillard Thompson, Frederick Satterthwaite, Ted Biby, Werner Grunwald, Bruce Carlson and Henry Boucher.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Winfield, 800 Main Place, Winfield, KS 67156.

Emily Frazier

Services for Doris Emily Frazier were held at 10 a.m. March 21, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Pastor Diane Massey and the Rev. Bill Soule officiated. Burial was in Union-Graham Cemetery.

Carrol Wray Campbell and Chuck Wright offered remembrances.

Jackie Hauer was the organist. Deborah Baxter sang “O Rest in the Lord,” Brian Stranghoner sang “The Lord's Prayer” and “If With All Your Heart,” and the congregation sang “Crossing the Bar.” Other music included “Waldesnacht.”

Honorary casket bearers were David Andersen, Don Andersen, Harley Day, John Dicken, Barry Flinchbaugh, Bonnie Hittle, Loyd Hittle, Helen McCall, Bill Medley, Julie Owens, John Rold, Phyllis Rold, Guy Stamps, Rebecca Stamps and Chuck Wright.

Casket bearers were Stephen Kendal, Warren Farley, John Eric, Graham Phillip and Jeremy Lee Frazier.

Memorial contributions may be made for the Winfield Middle School library.
