Helen Lewis

Helen B. (Olds) Lewis, 88, of 716 Tweed, Winfield, died March 21, 2002, at Cumbernauld Village.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 5.

A memorial has been established with Cumbernauld Village. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Lewis was born Aug. 10, 1913, on a farm near Leon, to Amy (Thompson) and Ralph Wilcox. Her mother died when she was eight years old, and she and her three sisters were raised by their aunt, Edna Lucas. She was educated in the Leon and Kingley area.

On Aug. 2, 1935, she married Rex Olds. They made their first home in Atlanta, later lived in Arkansas City and moved to Winfield in 1951. Mr. Olds died in 1966.

Following his death, she became a manager at the Peter Pan Ice Cream Store in Winfield and worked there until 1970.

On Oct. 17, 1970, she married Al Lewis in Newkirk, Okla. They moved to Newkirk where she was a homemaker. Mr. Lewis died in 1985.

A resident of Cumbernauld Village since July 2001, Lewis was a member of the First Christian Church and the Sweetwater Club, both of Newkirk.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Olds, Tampa, Fla., and Larry Olds, Anthony; a daughter, Sherry Miller, Winfield; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Steven McCord

Steven Ray McCord, 43, of Winfield, died March 21, 2002, at his home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

The family will greet visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

An educational fund for McCord's daughters has been established as a memorial. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service, P.O. Box 720, Winfield, KS 67156.

McCord was born Nov. 19, 1958, in Arkansas city, to Janice M. (Neal) and Floid Ray McCord. He was raised in Arkansas City and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1976. During high school, he was a member of Future Farmers of America and was active in football and wrestling. He also competed in rodeos, trained horses and rode motorcycles. As a young man he was employed in farming by Merle Peters.

Following graduation with a 4.0 grade point average from Cowley County Community College, he worked for Miller Tire Co. in Arkansas City.

He then moved to Gillette, Wyo., where he worked for Gaine Production Co.

On Dec. 23, 1983, he married Joni Watts in Arkansas City.

From 1979 to 1994, he worked as a tool and die maker for Mobile Caballo Roho Mine in Gillette. He returned to Arkansas City in 1994 when he began working with his father at McCord Enterprises.

McCord was formerly affiliated with the First United Methodist Church in Arkansas City.

Survivors include three daughters, Paige McCord, Hali McCord and Piper McCord, all of Arkansas City; his parents, Floid Ray and Veleda McCord, Winfield, and Jan and Jerry Bobek, Arkansas City; a brother, Col. Rick Weaver, Topeka; two sisters, Pam Bryant, Arkansas City, and Wanee McCord, Gillette, Wyo.; two stepbrothers and five stepsisters; and his grandmother, Fern Bishop, Arkansas City.

Ray Martin

DEXTER – William “Ray” Martin, 67, of Dexter, died March 21, 2002, at his home.

Cremation has taken place. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Friends may sign a register book on Monday.

The family suggests memorials to the American Lung Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Martin was born on March 8, 1935, on a farm near Dexter, to Marie M. (Eastman) and William Raymond Martin. He was raised in rural Dexter and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1952. He then went to work for the Arkansas City Flour Mill. He also worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation before entering the military.

He entered the Kansas National Guard in 1953 and enlisted in the U.S. Army on Dec. 17, 1954. A high speed radio operator, he was stationed in Oakland, Calif., until his discharge on Nov. 18, 1957.

In 1958 Martin attended Midwest Business College and completed a Morse Code course. He moved to Chanute and began working as a telegrapher for the Santa Fe Railroad.

On July 9, 1960, he married Bonnie J. Stanley in Chanute. In 1961 they moved to Wichita where he was employed as a salesman with Guaranteed Foods.

Martin transferred to Kansas City, Kan., in 1962, to Omaha, Neb., in 1968, and later to Grand Island, Neb. There he formed MAR-BOL Distributions, a food distribution company. After that company was dissolved, he formed Nebraska Meat Processors of Osmond, Neb.

In 1989 the Martins moved to Winfield where he continued working in food sales. In 1993 he began working at Rubbermaid Home Products in production and later was promoted to the quality assurance department.

In 1996 the Martins moved to Dexter, and he retired from Rubbermaid in 1997.

Martin was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Winfield and the Knights of Columbus chapter of Grand Island. He was also a member of American Legion Post 10 of Winfield.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Martin, Dexter; two sons, Mike Martin, North Sioux City, S.D., and Jason Martin, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; two daughters, Heather Whalen, Lincoln, Neb., and Holly Love, Fort Worth, Texas; three brothers, Bert Martin and Bruce Martin, both of Dexter, and Hal Martin, Oklahoma City; two sisters, Freda Hite, Fulton, Texas, and Cleota Sherwood, Silverdale; and four grandchildren.

Helen Lauppe

Helen Lauppe, 71, of Winfield, died March 21, 2002, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Memorials have been established with Winfield Rest Haven and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Lauppe was born Jan. 18, 1931, in Atlanta, to Lola (Gray) and Christopher Cunningham. She was raised and educated in Atlanta and Winfield. After high school, she worked at the dime store in Winfield.

On July 1, 1956, she married Lacel L. Lauppe, and they made their home in Winfield. She was employed as a cook at Winfield High School while her children were in school. In May 1984 she went to work as a cook at William Newton Hospital until her retirement in August 2000.

A son, Carl Lauppe, died in August 1970, and her husband died in April 1973.

Survivors include two sons, Raymon Lauppe and Henery Lauppe, and two daughters, Esther Lauppe and Reta Lauppe, all of Winfield; a brother, Larance Cunningham, Winfield; and four grandchildren.

Helen Lewis

Services for Helen B. (Olds) Lewis were held at 2:30 p.m. March 25, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Marilyn Buffum was the organist. Larry Olds Jr. sang “In the Garden” and “How Great Thou Art.”

Honorary casket bearers were Gary Dean Miller, Richard Miller and Curtis Olds.

Casket bearers were Mark Knott, Harley Linnabary, Jabin Olds, Jerry Olds Jr., Kent Olds and Larry Dean Olds Jr.

A memorial has been established with Cumbernauld Village.

Steven McCord

Services for Steven Ray McCord were held at 10:30 a.m. March 25, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Pastor Lance Carrithers officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Music included “Wind Beneath My Wings” sung by Bette Midler, “Daddy Let Me Drive” sung by Alan Jackson, and “Commutin' and Ridin'” from “The Bared and the Balladeer” starring Waddie Mitchell and Don Edwards.

Honorary casket bearers were Danny Beard, Dr. Gary Benton, Kelly Fisk, Wayne Gaither, Jim Miller, Phil Osborn, Merle Peters, Johnie Stone, Danny Uden and Galen Webb.

Casket bearers were Clint, Keith and Ken Bryant, Derek and Rick Larimore and Col. Rick Weaver.

An education fund for McCord's daughters has been established in his memory.

Fred Elliott

WICHITA – Fred L. Elliott, 90, of Wichita, died March 25, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Olive Christian Church. The Rev. Roger Beason will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Elliott was born Dec. 29, 1911, in Douglass, to Ollie (Briggs) and Fred J. Elliott. He was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School.

He married Lorraine G. Williams, who preceded him in death.

Elliott was employed by Cities Service Oil before his retirement. He was affiliated with the Christian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Brady, Derby; a son, Fredric Elliott, Long Beach, Calif.; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Helen Lauppe

Services for Helen Marie Lauppe were held at 10 a.m. March 26, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Fred Darkow officiated. Burial was in Burden Cemetery.

Music included “Amazing Grace,” “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Wind Beneath My Wings,” presented by pianist Rick Schiff.

Honorary casket bearers were Clayton, Henry, Jonathan, Justin and Raymond Lauppe, Chris, Laurence, Eric and Tyler Cunningham and Vernon Westenfield.

Casket bearers were Tommy Forbeck, Jim Gardner, Tom Nigh, Ronnie Richard, Jim Tapia and Jim Webster.

Memorials have been established with Winfield Rest Haven and Henry Hines Memorial Hospice Inc.

Jimmie Kelly

FORT WORTH, Texas – Jimmie L. Kelly, 70, of Fort Worth, died March 24, 2002, of cancer at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Dallas.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in New Salem Cemetery north of Winfield.

Memorials have been established with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and United Way. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.

Kelly was born Oct. 29, 1931, in Winfield, to Pansy (Tanner) and Vernon Kelly. He was raised and educated in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1950.

After high school, he served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in France. Then he moved to Fort Worth with his bride, Carol Hann Kelly. He retired from Cummins Sales and Service in Arlington, Texas, as director of customer service.

Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1977, Kelly served on the Tarrant County Multiple Sclerosis Board of Directors and was active in the United Way.

Survivors include his wife, Carol L. Kelly, a son, Rick Kelly, a daughter, Janice L. Fritchen, a brother, Richard Kelly, and a granddaughter, all of Fort Worth.
