Ruth Lundy
ENID, Okla. – Ruth Mary Lundy, 92, of Enid, formerly of Winfield and Arkansas City, died March 26, 2002, in Enid.
Services will be at 3 p.m Friday at Riverview Cemetery
in Arkansas City.
Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home from 1 to 5 Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Enid Hospice-Circle of Love, 529 N. Grand, Enid, OK 73701, or through the funeral home, 906 W. Kansas, Arkansas City, KS 67005.
Lundy was born Dec. 29, 1909, in Hardy, Okla., to Alma Jane (Howland) and Frank B. Rogers. Her family moved to Arkansas City where she graduated from high school in 1929.
She and Claude Henry Lundy were married March 8, 1929, in Tulsa and lived in Arkansas City. They later moved to Moline. During World War II they moved to Parsons where they were employed at the ordnance plant. They also has a grocery store before operating a drive-in restaurant for over 15 years.
The Lundys returned to Arkansas City in 1970. Mr. Lundy died Aug. 14, 1981. She lived at Walnut Towers and Good Samaritan Village in Winfield before moving to Enid in 1997.
Lundy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Arkansas City.
Survivors include a son, Richard Lundy, Enid; a daughter, Claudette Reed, Otto, N.C.; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Russell Dippel
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Russell K. Dippel, 72, of South Lake Tahoe, formerly of Winfield, died March 17, 2002.
A celebration of life was held March 22 at American Legion Post 795 in South Lake Tahoe.
Dippel was born Sept. 16, 1929, in Canton, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of colonel before his discharge in 1951.
Dippel was an accountant for 50 years, many at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center.
A resident of South Lake Tahoe since 1977, he worked as a security guard at Caesar's Tahoe.
He was a member of American Legion Post 795, South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge and the Knights of Columbus.
His wife of 31 years, Barbara Dippel, died in 1981.
Survivors include a son, Gordon Dippel, Winfield; two daughters, Elaine Hughes, Wichita, and Robin Toste, Pollock Pines, Calif.; a brother, Bruce Dippel, California; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Joe Atkinson
UDALL – William Joseph “Joe” Atkinson, 88, of Udall, died March 27, 2002, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Udall United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Udall Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight. The family will greet visitors from 7 to 8.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Udall United Methodist Church and the American Heart Association through the funeral home.
Atkinson was born Feb. 16, 1914, in rural Udall, to Murriel (Hoop) and Jule Atkinson. He was raised on a farm near Udall and graduated from Udall High School in 1932.
On Aug. 19, 1934, he married Eleanor Craig in Wichita. He farmed for over 30 years west of Udall. After he retired in 1965, he and his wife spent their winters in Aransas Pass, Texas, and Yuma, Ariz.
Atkinson was a member of the Udall United Methodist Church where he served on the board for a number of years. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge in Belle Plaine. He served on the boards of the Udall school district, Udall Co-op and community building and was active in the Udall 4-H Club and the Cowley County Fair board.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Atkinson, Udall; a son, Larry Atkinson, Winfield; two daughters, Barbara Depenbusch, Columbus, and Nancy Slusher, Stillwater, Okla.; and nine grandchildren.
Tom Dimit
John Thomas “Tom” Dimit, 73, of Winfield, died March 26, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday.
Memorials have been established with the Boy Scouts and First United Methodist Men.
Dimit was born Jan. 19, 1929, in El Dorado, to Lois (Kelly) and Paul Dimit. He moved to Winfield as a child and graduated from Winfield High School in 1947.
Dimit served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1949 and was called back to serve during the Korean War from 1951 to 1952.
On Oct. 21, 1950, he married Dorothy Nickels in Winfield.
From 1961 to 1982 Dimit worked at Rodeo Meats in Arkansas City. After retiring he worked for the Winfield school district from 1982 to 1995.
For 43 years Dimit served in many capacities in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in Winfield, including scout master of Troop 316 of the First United Methodist Church.
Dimit was a member of First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Dimit, Winfield; three sons, John Dimit Jr., Wichita, David Dimit, Winfield, and Scott Dimit, Big Piney, Wyo.; two sisters, Peggy Bean, Aurora, Colo., and Kay Russell, Winfield; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Butch Edwards
DOUGLASS – Dennis B. “Butch” Edwards, 54, a retired Boeing maintenance employee, of Douglass, died March 28, 2002, in Wichita.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Douglass Church of Christ. Burial will be in Douglass Cemetery. Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.
Edwards was born March 23, 1948, in El Dorado, to Ilo Marie (Timbrell) and Raymond Edwards.
On Jan. 21, 2000, he married Martha Berge in El Dorado.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Edwards, Douglass; two sons, Montgomery Edwards, Austin, Texas, and Larry Edwards, Canton, Ohio; three brothers, Armond Edwards, Fort Worth, Texas, Odell Edwards, Nickerson, and David Edwards, Bonita Springs, Fla.; four sisters, Rometa Seal, Nellie Edwards and Gail McKay, all of Douglass, and Lori Metheny, Greenwich; and two grandchildren.
Jimmie Kelly
Services for Jimmie L. Kelly were held at 2 p.m. March 28, 2002, in New Salem Cemetery. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated.
Arlan and Wilma Anglemyer sang “In the Garden,” “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.”
Casket bearers were Scott Frichen, Rick Kelly and Lloyd Pappan.
Memorials have been established with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the United Way.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Bobbie Helton
WICHITA – Bobbie D. Helton, 60, of Wichita, died March 28, 2002, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service, Winfield. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Wichita.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to service time Monday.
A memorial has been established with the Memorial Forest at Winfield City Lake. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Helton was born July 18, 1941, in Conway County, Ark., to Velma (Branham) and Charley McClure. She was raised and educated in Morrillton, Ark. As a young girl, she worked in the cotton fields with her family and at the local drugstore's soda fountain. She later worked as a seamstress at a garment factory in Morrillton.
On Sept. 17, 1960, she married John A. Helton in Morrillton. In 1965 they moved to Wichita.
Helton worked at Morgan Bullough as a line supervisor and seamstress until retiring in 1977. In 1999 she began working as a park ranger at the Winfield City Lake. She and her husband had spent their summers at the lake for the past 30 years.
Survivors include her husband, John Helton, and a daughter, Rhonda Helton, both of Wichita; three brothers, Darrel McClure, Springdale, Ark., D.J. McClure, Latham, and Roy McClure, Plummerville, Ark.; and two sisters, Dorothy Moore, Adona, Ark., and Charlene Dugan, Arkansas.

ARKANSAS CITY – Services for Ruth M. Rogers Lundy were held at 3 p.m. March 29, 2002, in Riverview Cemetery. The Rev. Danny Daniel officiated.

Peggy Burns
Peggy L. Burns, 48, of 600 E. 13th, Winfield, died March 29, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 tonight. The family will greet visitors from 6 to 7.
Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society and the Kansas Veterans Home. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Burns was born Jan. 7, 1954, in Winfield, to Ethel (Brooks) and Ralph Prouty. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1972. She received a certificate of social work from Southwestern College and was employed at both Good Samaritan Village and Walnut Hill Nursing Center.
On Oct. 19, 1991, she married Patrick C. Burns in Winfield.
She was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Post 10 and the 8 and 40. She also worked at the American Legion's bingo canteen.
A volunteer at the Kansas Veterans Home, Burns received a state award for volunteer work from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Patrick Burns, and her mother, Ethel Prouty, both of Winfield; and two brothers, Ed Prouty, Arkansas City, and Mark Prouty, Winfield.
Joe Atkinson
UDALL Services for William Joseph "Joe" Atkinson were held at 2 p.m. March 29, 2002, at the Udall United Methodist Church. The Rev. Cathy Holley officiated.
Burial was in Udall Cemetery. The Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Belle Plaine conducted graveside rites.
Cora Mettling was the organist, and Carla Dill performed "How Great Thou Art" and "Precious Memories."
Honorary casket bearers were Homer Clark, Frank Craig, Joe Hoop, Jack Horner, Duane Mortimer, Bill Pittman, Kelly Preston and Jimmy Williams.
Casket bearers were Bob Atkinson, Rick Godwin, Randy Hoffman, Dick Rutter, Jim Timmis and Paul Tschopp.
Memorials have been established with the Udall United Methodist Church and the American Heart Association.
