Joe Gilkison

Joseph U. “Joe” Gilkison, 82, of Winfield, died April 6, 2002, at the Kansas Veterans Home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 tonight.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas Veterans Home Alzheimer's Unit or any Hospice organization through the funeral home.

Gilkison was born Aug. 16, 1919, in Toddville, Iowa, to Edith (Hawkins) and Sampson L. Gilkison. The family moved many times during his youth because his father was a minister. When he was a teenager, Gilkison worked on an Iowa dairy farm. He also worked briefly with his father, who was a barber as well as a minister. In the 1930s the family moved to McPherson where Gilkison attended high school.

In 1938 he married and moved to Wichita where he began working for Beech Aircraft Co.

A World War II veteran, Gilkison enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in the tank destroyer division in Germany. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to Wichita. He and his wife divorced at that time.

In 1947 he began his career in floor covering as an installer. He also started a Shetland pony ride for children at the Consoliver Brothers Kiddyland Amusement Park in Wichita.

On May 5, 1948, he married June Avery, and they made their home in Wichita.

After Gilkison sold his pony ride in 1950, the couple moved to Emporia where he continued floor covering installation as a freelancer. In 1952 he was hired as a wholesale representative for General Distributors of Wichita, and a few years later he started traveling for the W.C. Tingle Co. of Kansas City, Mo., and worked as their sales representative until 1971. Then the family moved to Winfield and established Joe's Carpet and Interiors. They retired in 1985.

Gilkison was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and also belonged to American Legion Post 10.

An infant daughter, Mary Gilkison, and a son, Larry Gilkison, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, June Gilkison, Winfield; two sons, Greg Gilkison, Winfield, and Garold Gilkison, Burlington; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Glenn DeMeritt

UDALL – Glenn Keith DeMeritt, 63, of Udall, died April 7, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Udall High School. Burial will be in Cambridge Cemetery.

Friends may sign a book at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 8 tonight.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association and Udall High School.

DeMeritt was born Jan. 19, 1939, in Greensburg, to Mabel Maxine (Penninger) and Glen Keith DeMeritt. He was raised in Greensburg and graduated from high school in 1957. He attended Wichita State University.

On Dec. 14, 1975, he married Regina Stafford in Derby.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, DeMeritt was a licensed pilot and flight instructor. He worked for Cessna Aircraft for nine and a half years and had been employed at Raytheon Aircraft since 1983.

DeMeritt was a member of the Quite Birdmen pilots club, the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Greenburg, the York Rite of Pratt, the National Rifle Association and the Udall Baptist Church. He was a volunteer in the Udall schools.

Survivors include his wife, Regina DeMeritt, Udall; a son, Glenn Keith DeMeritt Jr., Atchison; two daughters, Sarah Rebecca DeMeritt, Lubbock, Texas, and Megan Maxine DeMeritt, Udall; a sister, Sherry McMichael, Hooker, Okla.; and three grandchildren.

Sarah Savage

Services for Sarah Irene Savage were held at 10:30 a.m. April 8, 2002, in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Rick Hathaway officiated.

Casket bearers were Eric, Mark, Keith and Gregg Atkinson and Michael Nixon.

A memorial has been established with Springview Manor in Conway Springs.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ellen Firebaugh

BURDEN – Services for Ellen Firebaugh were held at 2 p.m. April 9, 2002, in Burden Cemetery. The Rev. Ronnie Carpenter officiated.

Music was “The Old Rugged Cross,” “Beyond the Sunset” and “Amazing Grace.”

Honorary casket bearers were Gary Schwartz, Neil Watt, Delbert Peters, Ginger Davis and Marcy Beckman.

Casket bearers were Shannon Davis, Roger Firebaugh, Mark Firebaugh, Rob Beckman, Ronnie Samms and Larry Samms.

A memorial has been established with Friendship Meals, 700 Gary, Winfield, KS 67156.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mary King

Mary Marie (Deal) King, 76, longtime resident of the Winfield area, died April 6, 2002, at her home north of Winfield.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery north of Arkansas City.

Friends may call at the funeral home tonight from 5 to 9.

Memorials have been established with the Grandview and Grenola United Methodist churches. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

King was born Feb. 24, 1925, in Winfield, to Althea (Combs) and Edgar Deal. She was raised and educated in Winfield.

On Dec. 17, 1941, she married John Robert King in Newkirk. They made their home in Floral Township where she was a homemaker. After retirement they moved to Pineville and El Dorado Springs, Mo., for six years before moving to Grenola. They had recently moved to a new home north of Winfield.

King was a member of Grandview United Methodist Church where she coached the youth basketball team. She was a past president of United Methodist Women and served on many church committees. She was also past president of an Extension Homemakers Unit and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, John King, Winfield; three sons, Robert King, Burden, Larry King, North Pole, Alaska, and Joe King, Augusta; a brother, Bill Ross, Pineville, Mo.; two sisters, Arlene Carroll, Arkansas City, and Sue Blizzard, Pineville, Mo.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Joseph Gilkison

Services for Joseph U. “Joe” Gilkison were held at 10 a.m. April 9, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Revs. Suzanne Layne and Roger Lee officiated.

Burial was in Highland Cemetery. American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 performed military rites.

Layne sang “Amazing Grace.” Other music included “It Is No Secret” and “The Lord's Prayer.”

Honorary casket bearers were Bob Brown, Pat Clawson, Craig Edwards, Carl Finney, George Teachman and Lorren Voss.

Casket bearers were Graydon Carroll, Bill Gillig, Larry McCaslin, Floid McCord, Ivan Montandon and Ken Porter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Unit at the Kansas Veterans Home or any Hospice organization.

Robert Manske

YATES CENTER – Robert Conrad “Bob” Manske, 87, retired master mechanic, died March 12, 2002.

Services were held March 16 at Campbell Funeral Home.

Memorials were established with the Arthritis Foundation and the American Heart Association.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Manske, Yates Center; three sons, Robert Manske, Lawrence, Steven Manske, Wichita, and Randy Manske, Derby, formerly of Winfield; four daughters, Connie Baldino, Toms River, N.J., Jane Kruger, Shawnee, Judy Marler, Mission, and Pamela Spencer, Yates Center; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Hugo Torres

ARKANSAS CITY – Hugo Jaime Torres, 33, of Arkansas City, died April 4, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

The Rosary was said at 7 p.m. April 8 and a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. April 9, both at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. John Brungardt officiated. Burial will be in San Jose Cemetery, San Jose, Jalisco, Mexico.

An education fund for his children has been established as a memorial. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Torres was born May 24, 1968, in San Jose, Jalisco, Mexico, to Maria (Jaime) and Juan Torres. He was raised and educated in Orange County, Calif.

On Sept. 24, 1988, he married Cecilia Valencia in Orange County. They moved to Arkansas City two years ago when Torres became manager and co-owner of El Torrero Restaurant.

Survivors include his wife, Cecilia Torres, a son, Victor Hugo Torres, and three daughters, Elizabeth Yvonne, Kimberly Natalie and Mary Gissele Torres, all of Arkansas City; his parents, Juan and Maria Torres, Mexico; a brother, Jose Manuel Torres, Arkansas City; four sisters, Martha Torres, Mexico, Maria de Jesus Torres and Angelica Torres, both of Charlotte, N.C., and Rosa Torres, Siloam Springs, Ark.; and his grandparents, Demetrio Jaime and Pabla Torres, Mexico.

Neal Kier

Services for Neal J. Kier were held at 2 p.m. April 9, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Pastors Marrell Cornwell, Scott Osborne, Arley Forsyth and John Chance officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Donna Osborne performed “The Lord's Prayer,” “Healer in the House,” “Go Rest High on That Mountain” and “Bowed on My Knees and Cried Holy.” Chance was the pianist.

Honorary casket bearers were Kier's grandchildren, Jacob, Jeremy and Joshua Kier, Jamie Smith and Amanda Snell.

Casket bearers were Jim Clark, Rick Diemart, Merlyn Logsdon, Tim Mott, Stanley Springsteen and Gene Thurber.

A memorial was established with the First Pentecostal Church Children's Bus Ministry in Wichita.

Gladys Stalnaker

ARKANSAS CITY – Gladys L. Stalnaker, 88, of Arkansas City, died April 8, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services were at 2 p.m. April 10 at Mount Hope United Methodist Church. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the church. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Stalnaker was born Feb. 23, 1914, in Geuda Springs, to Elsie (Waggoner) and Ross White. She lived in the Geuda Springs community as a young girl and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1932.

On April 12, 1934, she married Chester Stalnaker in Minneapolis, Kan., and they made their home in the Ashton/Geuda Springs area. They farmed throughout their marriage. Her husband preceded Stalnaker in death.

She was a member of Mount Hope United Methodist Church and the Happy Hour and Friendly Circle clubs.

Survivors include two sons, David Stalnaker, Winfield, and Wayne Stalnaker, Leavenworth; five grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-granddaughter.
