Mary King
Services for Mary Marie (Deal) King were held at 10:30 a.m. April 10, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Don Foster officiated. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery
near Arkansas City.
Music included “Just Beyond the Moon,” performed by Tex Ritter, and “Beyond the Sunset,” performed by Vicki Clifford.
Casket bearers were King's grandsons and nephews, Kevin Austin, Merle Deal, Erik, Greg and Tom King and Gary Spencer.
Memorials were established with the Grenola and Grandview United Methodist churches.
Cindy Ware
SEVERY – Cinda Marie “Cindy” Ware, 52, of Severy, died April 9, 2002, at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Severy Baptist Church. The Rev. Tony Pameticky will officiate. Burial will be in South Lawn Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Ware was born Nov. 16, 1949, in Eureka, to Bernita June (Boss) and Wyatt Buren Knight. She attended Severy Grade School and graduated from Leon High School.
On Oct. 1, 1971, she married James V. Ware in Howard. He died June 4, 1995.
A homemaker, Ware was employed as a cook for many years. She was a member of Severy Baptist Church.
Survivors include her caregiver, Jack Chandler, and a son, Randy Ware, both of Severy; two daughters, Christy Ware, El Dorado, and Angela Ware, Howard; her mother, Bernita Knight, Howard; two brothers, Gary Knight, Severy, and Terry Knight, Grenola; a sister, Sandra Allen, Milton; and four grandchildren.
Irma Dean Lawrence
GODDARD – Irma Dean Lawrence, 79, formerly of Winfield, died April 10, 2002, at Medicalodge in Goddard.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the Salvation Army. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Lawrence was born Aug. 7, 1922, in Watova, Okla., to Bessie Evaline (Brashear) and Otto Miles Brashear. She attended grade school in Watova and in 1934 moved to Winfield with her family. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1941 and attended St. John's College.
On July 1, 1942, she married Robert Lee Lawrence at the Timber Creek Friends Church near Atlanta. They lived in Dexter, Cedar Vale, Cambridge and Burden while her husband farmed. In 1951 they returned to Winfield and in 1966 moved to Arkansas City. Her husband died Jan. 30, 1977.
In the early 1980s, Lawrence returned to Winfield. Due to failing health, she later moved to Wichita to be near family.
Lawrence was a member of Hillcrest Bible Baptist Church in Arkansas City. She had been a Sunday school teacher and vacation Bible school teacher at many churches through the years and a member of an Extension Homemakers Unit.
Survivors include two sons, Robert “Bob” Lawrence, Wichita, and Larry Lawrence, Chelsea, Okla.; a sister, Vesta Brant, Dodge City; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Glenn DeMeritt
UDALL – Services for Glenn Keith DeMeritt were held at 2 p.m. April 10, 2002, at Udall High School. Pastor John Bilyeu officiated. Burial was in Cambridge Cemetery.
Music selections included Frank Sinatra's “I Did It My Way.”
Casket bearers were Herb Gilbreath, Randall Smith, Jerry Smith, Gary Bertram, Bruce Umholtz and David Waters.
Memorials were established with the American Heart Association and Udall High School.
Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Thelma Lanier
BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – Thelma E. Lanier, 94, formerly of Winfield and Atlanta, died April 11, 2002, at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Atlanta Christian Church. Burial will be in Atlanta Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Lanier was born Aug. 25, 1907, on a farm west of Wilmot to Amy (Woodside) and Herbert S. Groom. When she was a child, the family moved three miles south and a half mile east of Atlanta and lived there until 1920. They moved to Argonia where they lived about a year before returning to a farm three miles southeast of Atlanta.
In 1925 Lanier graduated from Atlanta High School. She attended summer sessions at Southwestern College and Pittsburg State Teachers College.
On Aug. 8, 1928, she married Lloyd Lanier in Girard. They made their home near Atlanta except for five years spent in Rosalia.
Lanier taught in grade schools for four years and did several years of substitute teaching during World War II. She often rode to school on horseback to comply with the gasoline and tire restrictions in those days.
In 1970 she and her husband left the farm and moved into Atlanta. He died Sept. 12, 1979.
Baptized into the Atlanta Christian Church at the age of 15, Lanier taught adult Sunday school from 1947 to 1982 when she moved to Winfield. She was a member of both the Atlanta and Winfield First Christian churches.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Krehbiel, Bartlesville; a son, Mike Lanier, Tacoma, Wash.; a sister, Aurice Bradford, Salina; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Kent Archer
Services for Kent L. Archer were held at 2 p.m. April 8, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ellie Foster officiated. Burial was in Tisdale Cemetery.
Music included “Only God Knows Why,” performed by Kid Rock, and “The Old Rugged Cross,” “Amazing Grace” and “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” performed by Jim Phillips and the Phillips Sisters.
Honorary casket bearers were Bret Archer, Howard Clark, Brian Eslick, Charles Irvin, Tom Kent, Roger Moody, Randy Otto and Jim Phillips.
Casket bearers were Daniel, Joshua and Nat Archer, Cary Irvin, Jeremy Montgomery and Steve Stoabs.
A memorial has been established with the American Liver Foundation.
Margaret Boyd
WICHITA – Margaret M. Boyd, 80, of Wichita, died April 14, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Union Cemetery
in Winfield.
Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association.
Boyd was born Jan. 1, 1922, in Wichita, to Mary L. (Kelly) and Azro A. Buck. She was raised in Wichita and graduated from Wichita East High School.
In 1939 she married Johnnie Helfer. He died in 1944.
In 1956 she married Charles Boyd in Nevada. He died in 1987.
Boyd was a photolithographer and offset press operator for many years in Oakland, Calif. She retired in 1987.
She was a member of the Wichita chapter of the Midwest Genealogical and Historical Society.
A son, Glenn K. Helfer, preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Stilley, Wichita, and Charla John, Haysville; a brother, Charles Buck, Slidell, La.; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Irma Dean Lawrence
Services for Irma Dean Lawrence were held at 2 p.m. April 12, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Music included “Amazing Grace,” “In the Garden” and “How Great Thou Art.”
Casket bearers were Kevine, Monte and Roger Lawrence and Kevin Perry.
A memorial has been established with the Salvation Army.
Bobby Cowan
DOUGLASS – Bobby Gene Cowan, 69, a retired Boeing Wichita machinist and former Mobil Refinery operator, died April 14, 2002, in Douglass.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Douglass Church of Christ. Burial will be in Douglass Cemetery. Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Cowan was born Sept. 21, 1932, in McDonald County, Mo., to Margaret (Hinkle) and William B. Cowan.
On Nov. 27, 1976, he married Janiece I. Wilhelm in Wichita.
Survivors include his wife, Janiece Cowan, Douglass; seven daughters, Twyla Dowell, Leon, Roxann Heit and Tracey Williams, both of Augusta, Vivian Harris, Wichita, Leona Cowan, Colorado, Cynthia Lowery, Benton, and Juanita Milligan, Andover; a brother, Carol Dean Cowan, California; two sisters, Mary Jo Marble, Neosho, Mo., and Shirley Watts, Joplin, Mo.; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Barry Baker
OXFORD – Thomas Barry Baker, 56, of Oxford, died April 13, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Wichita.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Oxford Cemetery. Friends may call at Oxford Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day.
Baker was born Jan. 5, 1946, in Erie, Okla., to Susan E. (Henry) and Andrew Barry Baker. He attended Ponca City Military Academy and graduated from Cowley County Community College. During the Vietnam War he served in the U.S. Navy.
Baker worked at Feaster-Sawyer Two-Way Communications, then purchased the business and renamed it Southern Kansas Communications Co. He also worked for the Sumner County Sheriff's Department and at auto parts stores in Wellington and Belle Plaine.
Baker was a life member of Spencer Ralston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1254 in Arkansas City.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Baker, Jonesboro, Ark., and Barry Baker, Winfield; a daughter, Betty Olson, Arkansas City; a brother, William Baker, Wichita; and four grandchildren.
