Jennie Newton

Jennie E. Newton, 91, of 1201 Menor, Winfield, died April 14, 2002, at the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Center in Wichita.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.

Newton was born Dec. 26, 1910, in Winfield, to Cora E. (Carter) and David Monroe Houghton. She was raised and educated in the Winfield area.

In 1929 she married Claude Henry Frederick. They later divorced.

On June 23, 1962, she married Joseph Eugene “Gene” Newton in Winfield. He died in 1978.

Newton worked in the dietary department at William Newton Hospital for many years. After her retirement, she volunteered at the hospital snack bar.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

A son, Howard, preceded her in death.

Survivors include five daughters, Elinor Starbuck and Alta DeVore, both of Wichita, Bernice Riggins, Elsinore, Mo., Alice Elam, Las Vegas, and Nancy Robinson, Arkansas City; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Thelma Lanier

Services for Thelma E. Lanier were held at 10:30 a.m. April 15, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Pastor Doug Dorris officiated. Burial was in Atlanta Cemetery.

Rita Krug was the pianist, and Kathryn Grow performed “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow.” The congregation sang “I'll Meet You in the Morning.”

Casket bearers were Dorsey Couch, Warren Hahn, Dick Holverson, Dwain Stout, Dave Whitehill and Larry Womacks.

A memorial has been established with United Cerebral Palsy, 7830 S.E. Foster Road, Portland, OR 97206.

Bob Smith

Robert Newton “Bob” Smith, 77, of 506 E. 14th, Winfield, died April 15, 2002, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Winfield State Hospital Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Smith was born Oct. 24, 1924, and was institutionalized most of his life. He lived at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for a number of years. When it closed, he transferred to Southwinds Community Alternatives.

Survivors include his guardian, Kathy Shoemaker, Winfield, and his friends and caregivers.

Bob Bishop

R.E. “Bob” Bishop, of Winfield, died April 16, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Cremation has been effected.

Bishop was a retired Santa Fe Railroad engineer and moved to Wellington in 1946. He had resided in Winfield for four years.

Oxford Funeral Service will announce arrangements.

Marjorie Morrell

Marjorie Eleanor Morrell, 83, of 1320 Ann, Apt. 3, Winfield, died April 13, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, north of Arkansas City.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 tonight. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8.

Memorials have been established with Grace United Methodist Church and Winfield Rest Haven. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Morrell was born Dec. 12, 1918, in Winfield, to Pauline (Brooks) and Ray Cadwell. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1937. During the 1930s, she worked at McClellen's Dry Goods in Winfield.

On Oct. 8, 1939, she married Cecil Morrell in Winfield. They made their home in Winfield where they established two businesses, C&E Auto and West Ninth Sinclair Service Repair. In 1957 they opened Morrell Main Street Auto where she was secretary and bookkeeper until retiring in 1973. From 1975 to 1998 she and her husband managed the Adeline and Delano Apartments before retiring and moving to Winfield Rest Haven.

Survivors include her husband, Cecil Morrell, Winfield; two sons, Noble Morrell, Topeka, and Dale Morrell, Maize; a brother, Warren Cadwell, Winfield; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Cari Griggs

SEDAN – Cari Ann Griggs, 27, of Sedan, formerly of Arkansas City, died April 15, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Pastor Eugene McCarty will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.

A memorial has been established as the Griggs Children Education Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Griggs was born Oct. 20, 1974, in Winfield, to Jeanne (Endicott) and Michael Elswick. She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1993 and from Cowley County Community College in 1995.

On Oct. 25, 1993, she married Patrick Daniel Griggs in Miami, Okla. They made their home in Sedan.

Griggs was a secretary for the Chautauqua County Attorney's Office. She attended the Chautauqua Baptist Church and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority and Professional Business Women of Sedan.

Survivors include her husband, Patrick Daniel Griggs, a daughter, Amber Reann Griggs, and a son, Brandon Michael Griggs, all of Sedan; her mother, Jeanne Waldorf, Arkansas City; her father, Michael Elswick, Collinsville, Okla.; a brother, Cory Elswick, Wichita; and her grandparents, Max and Sue Elswick, Arkansas City.

Dennis Hall

ARKANSAS CITY – Dennis Walter Hall, 53, of Arkansas City, died April 15, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Livingston Funeral Home in Kingman. Burial will be in Hoosier Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 8 tonight, noon to 8 Thursday and before service time Friday.

A memorial has been established with Redeemer Lutheran Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home, P.O. Box 453, Kingman, KS 67068.

Hall was born Aug. 24, 1948, in Kingman, to Peggy (Hughes) and Walter Hall Jr.

Hall had previously lived in Winfield and Wichita. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church of Arkansas City.

Survivors include his mother, Peggy Hall, Wichita, and three brothers, Alan Hall and Doug Hall, both of Wichita, and Donald Hall, Topeka.

Margaret Boyd

Services for Margaret M. “Tugee” Boyd were held April 17 at Union Cemetery. The Rev. Jerre Nolte officiated.

Music included recordings of “Go Rest High on that Mountain” by Vince Gill, “If I Had Only Known” by Reba McIntire and “Sunshine on My Shoulder” by John Denver.

Honorary casket bearers were Steven A. Buck, Richard Stilley, Roger Kiehl, Eric John, Gary Ledbetter, James Clark, Tim Stock and Joe Plume.

A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Smith

Services for Robert Newton Smith were held at 2 p.m. April 17 at the Winfield State Hospital Cemetery.

Caregivers and friends at Southwind Community Alternatives spoke.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Glenn Peacock

MESA, Ariz. – Glenn J. Peacock, 76, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Winfield, died April 9, 2002.

Services were held April 15. Tempe Mortuary, Tempe, Ariz., was in charge of arrangements.

Peacock was born in Winfield and moved to Arizona five and a half years ago.

He was a sheet metal mechanic for Cessna Aircraft.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Peacock, Mesa; two daughters, Sheryl Edwards, Eureka, and Linda Burke, Phoenix, Ariz.; three stepsisters and one stepbrother; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Keith Brown

NORWICH – Keith Brown, 79, a resident at the Kansas Veterans Home, formerly of Norwich, died Aug. 29, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Wichita.

Cremation has taken place.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the McPherson City Cemetery. The Rev. Dennis Cochran will officiate.

Memorials have been established with the Diabetes Foundation. Contributions may be made through Minnis Mortuary, P.O. Box 516, Bucklin, KS 67834.

Brown was born Sept. 11, 1921, in Reno County, to Reta (McChesney) and Earl H. Brown.

During World War II, he was decorated for his service in the U.S. Navy Air Corps. He attained the rank of lieutenant junior grade.

Brown moved from Las Vegas to Norwich in 1988 and had moved to the Kansas Veterans Home at Winfield in 1999.

Survivors include four children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
