Vina White

CEDAR VALE – Vina V. White, 85, of Cedar Vale, died April 28, 2002, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wheeler Funeral Home. Burial will be in Maple City Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with Cedar Vale Community Hospital, 501 Cedar, Cedar Vale, KS 67024.

White was born April 17, 1917, in Beaver County, Okla., to Jessie (Croy) and Marion E. Bair. The family moved to Arkansas City where she graduated from high school.

During World War II, White worked for a ship building company in California. She later worked as a butcher in Esparto, Calif., but quit when she was denied membership in the local union. The remainder of her life in California was spent as a homemaker. She returned to Cedar Vale in 1985.

On June 5, 1992, she married Edward White in Reno, Nev.

She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge and the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliaries. She attended the United Methodist Church.

A son, Virgil Bowman, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Edward White, Cedar Vale; a brother, Bill Bair, Miami, Okla.; and a sister, Elizabeth Magliocca, Grass Valley, Calif.

Art Romans

MOLINE – Granville McArthur “Art” Romans, 78, longtime resident of Moline, died April 29, 2002, at Elk Manor Nursing Home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Moline Christian Church. Pastor Ted Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Moline Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Thursday.

A memorial has been established with Elk Manor Nursing Home. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard.

Romans was born April 21, 1924, in the Big Apple community of Oregon County, Mo., to Lola Alice (House) and William Clinton Romans. He was raised and educated in the Big Apple community.

On Nov. 27, 1948, he married Betty Lou Yarbrough at West Plains, Mo. They moved to Elk Falls in 1950, and he was employed by the Rural Electric Association for a brief time.

In 1951 Romans became a heavy equipment operator for Concrete Materials, which later became Martin-Marietta Aggregates of Moline. Romans and his wife moved to Moline in 1961 and he retired from Martin-Marietta in 1987.

He moved to Elk Manor Nursing Home on Dec. 31, 1992.

Romans was a longtime member of the Moline Christian Church.

A son, Jacky Romans, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Romans, Moline; two sons, Jesse Romans, Carrollton, Ga., and James Romans, Little River; four brothers, Harold, Johnny and Bill Romans, all of West Plains, Mo., and Hubert Romans, Nebraska; a sister, Hazel Ledbetter, West Plains, Mo.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Rankin

Elizabeth E. Rankin, 89, of Good Samaritan Village, Winfield, died April 6, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cimarron United Methodist Church, Box 448, Cimarron, KS 67835.

Rankin was born Dec. 30, 1913, in Coldwater, to Carrie (Ferrin) and Elza Holms.

On June 16, 1934, she married Cecil Rankin in Mulvane. After he became a United Methodist minister, she worked with him in his ministry. She was also active in United Methodist Women.

She moved to Cimarron 18 years ago after her husband's death and had lived at Good Samaritan Village since February.

A son, John Rankin, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include three sons, Gary Rankin, Garden City, Duane Rankin, Cimarron, and Stephen Rankin, Winfield; two daughters, Karen Cottrell, Overland Park, and Susan Brown, Happy, Texas; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Stanley Asbury

CAMBRIDGE – Stanley F. Asbury, 79, of Cambridge, died April 30, 2002, at Medicalodge in Douglass.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Cambridge Baptist Church. Burial will be in Cambridge Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday. The family will greet visitors from 6 to 8.

Memorials have been established with the Cambridge Baptist Church and Cambridge Senior Citizens Center. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Asbury was born March 7, 1923, in Hooser, to Edith (Barnhart) and Ralph Asbury. He was raised and educated in rural Winfield and as a young man worked on the family farm.

On Dec. 24, 1945, he married Martha Logsdon near Cambridge. They made their home in Cambridge, and he worked on area ranches. In 1946 he entered the Army and served a year as a military policeman before being honorably discharged.

Shortly after his return, he went to work at Cities Service Gas Co. (later known as Williams Pipeline) in Cambridge and then in Haysville. He was an engineer for 38 years before retiring in 1985.

Asbury was a charter member of the Cambridge Baptist Church where he served as deacon, song leader and Sunday school teacher and did building maintenance. He was also a member of the Cowley County Council on Aging, Cambridge Senior Citizens and Cambridge City Council and served as a weather contact for the National Weather Service.

Survivors included his wife, Martha Asbury, Cambridge; two daughters, Barbara Stephens, Douglass, and Margaret Bing, Denver; a brother, Earl Asbury, Latham; three sisters, Florella Hankins and Ruth Barger, both of Winfield, and Charlotte Cousins, Wichita; a grandson and a great-granddaughter.

Dick Derr

Richard G. “Dick” Derr, 92, of Winfield, died April 29, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Hope Cemetery southwest of Arkansas City.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday. The family will greet visitors from 7 to 8.

A memorial has been established with the Kansas State Alzheimer's Foundation in Wichita. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Derr was born Dec. 7, 1909, southwest of Arkansas City, to Edith Naomi (Dickey) and Harry H. Derr. He attended IXL rural school and then junior and senior high school in Arkansas City. As a young man, he helped on neighbors' farms and raised fruits and vegetables on the home place as well as taking care of the dairy.

On Oct. 28, 1933, he married Viola Ernestine Boatman. They made their first home in Arkansas City and a year later moved to Udall where they farmed. In the late 1930s they moved to Silverdale and worked for Silverdale Limestone Co. In 1940 they settled north of Arkansas City, and Derr worked for Walter Hunt on his farm.

Derr began work as a mechanic at Allred's Tire and Implement Co. in Winfield, and in 1947 the family moved south of Winfield. Derr talked Mr. Allred into supplying him with a truck equipped with parts and tools so when he got to a farmer's home he could repair a problem immediately. He covered an area in a 200-mile radius of Winfield, and Massey-Harris and New Holland district managers would call him for help with repair problems.

In 1971 Derr retired from Allred's and started a custom combining and haying operation with his son.

His wife died in 1984.

Derr moved to Walnut Hill Nursing Center in 1998 and later to Cumbernauld Village.

Derr was a member of the Winfield Saddle Club and had been a Pleasant Valley 4-H Club leader. He served on the board of the Winfield Community Council and Rural Water District 2.

Survivors include a son, Harry Derr, Winfield; a daughter, Betty L. Prewett, Arkansas City; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Harrison Gross

PARSONS – Harrison R. Gross, 78, of Parsons, died April 29, 2002, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Watson Memorial Church of God in Christ. The Revs. Edward Scott, Charles Gross and Harold Gross will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. U.S. Army C Company, 1st Engineering, of Fort Riley, will provide military honors.

The family will greet visitors from 7 to 8 tonight at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, 405 Main.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church Building Fund.

Gross was born Sept. 3, 1923, in Port Gibson, Miss., to Bertha Mae (Smith) and Harrison “Cap” Gross. He was raised and educated in Mississippi. From 1943 to 1946 he served in the U.S. Army.

In 1946 he and Annie Mae Flood were married. She died in 1954.

He and Maggie Porter were married in Parsons in 1958.

In 1950 Gross moved to Parsons where he worked for the Katy Railroad for seven years. He was also employed at the ParKan Ladder Co., the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant and later Ruskin Manufacturing Co. where he worked 17 years until his retirement.

Gross was a member and senior deacon at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church and sang with its gospel quartet. In earlier years he was a member of Morgan Avenue Christian Church. He belonged to the Masonic Blue Lodge in Coffeyville and was a past worshipful master.

A daughter, Bessie Mae Gross, died April 16, 1996.

Survivors include his wife, Maggie Gross, Parsons; four sons, Harold Gross, Winfield, Charles Gross, Parsons, Alonzo Jones Gross, Port Gibson, Miss., and Manuel Gross, Wichita; three daughters, Faley Weathersby, Hattiesburg, Miss., Bertha Dodd, Wichita, and Eva Gross, Parsons; four brothers, Harrison Allen Gross, George Gross, Charlie Gross and James “Bay” Gross; two sisters, Rosie Mae McKnight, Vicksburg, Miss., and Charlie Ruth Robinson, Hammond, La.; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Alfred Baker

LEAVENWORTH – Alfred E. “Al” Baker Jr., 66, of Leavenworth, died April 29, 2002, at St. John Hospital, Leavenworth.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Wallula Christian Church. Burial will be in Mount Muncie Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 6 to 8 tonight.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wallula Christian Church, 23785 139th St., Leavenworth, KS 66048.

Baker was born Nov. 5, 1935, to Amelia and Alfred E. Baker Sr. and was raised on the family farm near Piper. He graduated from Piper High School in 1953.

On May 12, 1957, he married Elizabeth A. Stuckey in Leavenworth. She preceded him in death.

Baker received a bachelor‘s degree in animal husbandry in 1959 and returned to the family farm following graduation. In 1961 he was named field representative for Oppenheimer Industries, Kansas City, Mo., and was responsible for the inventory, records and movement of 65,000 head of Angus, Hereford and Brangus cattle in Kansas and surrounding states.

From 1964 to 1971 Baker served as the northeast area field representative for the American Hereford Association and the American Hereford Journal, Kansas City, Mo. He resided in both Virginia and Ohio and worked with owners of registered and commercial cattle in many states.

In 1971 he became youth director for the American Hereford Association and relocated his family to Kansas. He was responsible for coordinating activities with 38 state junior Hereford associations as well as junior activities and education at the national level.

In 1975 he formed Scott Cattle Co., a cattle brokerage and consulting service, and was involved with herd and ranch management consultation, advertising, sales management and exports. Since 1984 he had worked as a sales representative for local livestock feed and automobile dealers.

A longtime supporter of 4-H, Baker served as a project leader and livestock judging coach. He was a member of the Kansas Hereford Association, American Hereford Association, Northeast Kansas Hereford Association and Leavenworth County Beef Improvement Association. He was also a member and former elder of Wallula Christian Church.

Survivors include two sons, Jon C. “Chris” Baker, Burden, and Mark A. Baker, Pittsburg; a daughter, Karen L. Porter, Leavenworth; and four grandchildren.
