Gladys Stalnaker
ARKANSAS CITY – Gladys L. Stalnaker, 88, of Arkansas City, died April 8, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services were held May 10 at Mount Hope United Methodist Church with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery.
A memorial was established with Mount Hope United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.
Stalnaker was born Feb. 23, 1914, in Geuda Springs, to Elsie (Waggoner) and Ross White. She lived in the Geuda Springs community as a girl and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1932.
On April 12, 1934, she married Chester Stalnaker in Minneapolis, Kan., and they made their home and farmed in the Ashton-Geuda Springs area.
Stalnaker was a life member of Mount Hope United Methodist Church and a member of the Happy Hour and Friendly Circle clubs.
Her husband preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, David Stalnaker, Winfield, and Wayne Stalnaker, Leavenworth; five grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-granddaughter.
Gladys Denton
HOWARD – Gladys Viola Denton, 93, of Howard, died April 28, 2002, at Howard Twilight Manor.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church. The Revs. Kibum Kim and Gary Parsons will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with Howard Twilight Manor, Carter-Rader Post 149 American Legion Auxiliary, Howard United Methodist Church and Howard Senior Center. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.
Denton was born July 31, 1908, in Howard, to Annie May (McConihey) and Joseph Wilbert Morgan. She attended Mary Bell rural school and graduated from Howard High School.
After receiving a normal training certificate, she taught at Clear Creek grade school for two years. Later in life, she became a licensed practical nurse and was employed at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for several years.
On June 6, 1928, she married Guy Vernet Denton in Howard. They lived in the Clear Creek community until moving to Howard in 1935. Her husband died Jan. 12, 1959.
A homemaker, Denton was a longtime member of the Howard United Methodist Church.
A son, Guy Morgan Denton, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Pagan, Howard; nine grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.
Evelyn Comstock
CEDAR VALE – Services for Evelyn Rose Comstock were held at 1:30 p.m. May 1, 2002, in Round Mound Cemetery
near Cedar Vale. Pastor Gerald Graber officiated.
Music included “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” and “I'll Fly Away.”
Casket bearers were Joel Altum, Joey Anderson, Charley Bean, Jason Brooks and Clay Cantrell.
A memorial has been established with the Good Samaritan Village Activities Fund.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Louella Foxx
WICHITA – Louella Blanche Kennedy Foxx, 76, homemaker and seamstress, of Wichita, formerly of Howard, died April 30, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Resthaven Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be in Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association, 2100 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67214.
Foxx was born July 26, 1925, near Piedmont, to Lucy Edna (Fee) and Vernon Cole Adams.
On Oct. 12, 1940, she married Jesse W. Kennedy at Howard. They lived near Wauneta and later moved to Howard. The marriage ended in divorce.
On April 11, 1970, she and Edward A. Foxx were married. He preceded her in death.
She worked at Cob's Millers grocery store as a checker for years.
Foxx was a lifetime member of DEERS, a U.S. Air Force retired wives club; Royal Neighbors of America Society and the Rebecca Lodge of Howard.
Survivors include a son, Danny Ray Kennedy, Winfield; three daughters, Karon Kennedy-Hess, Wichita, Sue Runyon, Las Cruces, N.M., and Elaine Wangerin, Topeka; four sisters, Helen Hinkle, Howard, Frances Logsdon, Wichita, Georgia Anna Ambler, Seattle, and Vera M. Conard, Severy; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Vina White
CEDAR VALE – Services for Vina V. White were held at 2 p.m. May 2, 2002, at Wheeler Funeral Home. The Rev. Stanley Upchurch officiated. Burial was in Maple City Cemetery.
Evelyn Upchurch was the organist, and Pat Bailey was the vocalist.
Honorary casket bearers were Harold McGregor and Buddy Thomas.
Casket bearers were Carl P. , Trey and David Clapp, Chris Christopher, Ray Martin and Orville Bair.
A memorial has been established with Cedar Vale Community Hospital, 501 Cedar, Cedar Vale, KS 67024.
Donella Jordan
Services for Donella Jane (Hart) Jordan were held at 2 p.m. May 2, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. K. Dale Toles officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Music included “Crying in the Chapel” by Elvis Presley, “Wind Beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler, “Good Morning, Beautiful” by Steve Holy and “You Had Me From Hello” by Kenny Chesney.
Casket bearers were Shawn David, Richard Hart, Jimmy Lavallee, Steven Martinez, Chad Mercer and Jimmy Robinson.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society
Jack Murray
UDALL – Jack Murray, 77, of Udall, died May 2, 2002, at his home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Udall Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. in the Covington, Okla., City Cemetery.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home in Winfield from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
A memorial has been established with the Udall First Responders.
Murray was born March 14, 1925, in Tulsa, Okla., to Ethel (Newson) and Bowen B. Murray. He was raised in the Midwest.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1943.
For many years he worked as a GSA carpenter at McConnell Air Force Base before retiring in 1978.
In 1984 he married Sandra Keely in Winfield.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Murray, Udall; a son, Jess Murray, Arkadelphia, Ark.; two stepsons, Jay Dee Keen, Detroit, Mich., and Leslie Davis, Udall; two stepdaughters, Mariella Thompson, Wichita, and Cindy Moore, St. Augustine, Texas; a sister, Virginia Murray, Michigan; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Dick Derr
Services for Richard Gordon “Dick” Derr were held at 2 p.m. May 3 in Hope Cemetery
in Arkansas City. The Rev. H. Dean Lavelle officiated.
Special music included “Daddy's Hands” performed by Holly Dunn, “Love, Me” by Collin Raye, and “Life's Railway to Heaven,” by Patsy Cline.
Honorary casket bearers were Charles Finney, Darrell Jones, Charles Melugin, Bill Newman and Ed Scott.
Casket bearers were Donald Boatman, Ronald “Butch” Boatman, Dale Derr, Casey Evans, Tim Stohl, Jeff Tipson, Michael Vaden and Jeff Young.
A memorial has been established with the Kansas State Alzheimer's Foundation.

Stanley Asbury
CAMBRIDGE – Services for Stanley F. Asbury were held at 10:30 a.m. May 3, 2002, at the Cambridge Baptist Church. Brothers Bill Hale, Neal Alford and Ray Hiltzman officiated. Burial was in Cambridge Cemetery.
Barbara Stephens was the pianist. Music included “Whispering Hope,” performed by Mary Lou Ashcraft and Barbara Hale, and “Thank You,” performed by Walter Tredway, Christina Berkstresser and Georgia Tredway. The congregation sang “Because He Lives,” directed by Bill Stephens.
Honorary casket bearers were Jim Ashcraft, Forrest Ashenfelder, Terry Horseman, Bob Jones, Allen Miller, Robert Tredway, Kenny Triplett, Clifford Wallace and Stanley Williams.
Casket bearers were Justin and Kenny Bates, Lawrence Holt, Amil “Barney” Lundy, Darwin Newton and Leonard Weber.
Memorials have been established with the Cambridge Baptist Church and the Cambridge Senior Center.
