Thomas Anderson

ARKANSAS CITY – Thomas Henry Anderson, 79, of Arkansas City, died May 6, 2002, at his residence.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Bible Christian Church. The Rev. H. Dean LaVelle will officiate. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Anderson was born Oct. 3, 1922, in Arkansas City, to Letha May (Morris) and Albert Otto Anderson. He was raised and educated in Arkansas City. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

On Aug. 7, 1950, he married Norma J. Rollins in Perry, Okla., and they made their home in Arkansas City. They moved to Oklahoma City in 1955 but returned to Arkansas City in 1995 to live in the house where Anderson was born.

Anderson was a sheet metal worker for the local union in Oklahoma City.

He was a member of Bible Christian Church, Spencer Ralston Post 1254 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Victory Chapter 151 Order of Eastern Star and the Masonic Lodge of Jones, Okla.

Survivors include his wife, Norma J. Anderson, Arkansas City; a son, Harold W. “Bud” Anderson, and two daughters, Carla J. Anderson and Ellen Cathy, all of Oklahoma City; a sister, Alberta Christine Parson, Cheyenne, Wyo.; and eight grandchildren.

Carl Criger

HOWARD – Carl Russell Criger, 83, oil producer and rancher, died May 7, 2002, at his home.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Howard United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established with the Howard United Methodist Church and Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Criger's survivors include his wife, Frances Criger, Howard; a daughter, Carla Golden, Kansas City, Mo.; a son, Patrick Criger, Kirbyville, Mo.; three stepsons, Richard Hobson, Corrales, N.M., and Jerald Hobson and William Hobson, both of El Paso, Texas; a brother, Jim Criger, and a sister, Louise Harrod, both of Howard; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Retta Timmons

UDALL – Retta Lee Timmons, 50, of Udall, died May 7, 2002, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in the Sedan cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Steps to Life mission programs. Contributions may be made at the funeral home or the Winfield Mission of the Historic Seventh Day Adventist.

Timmons was born Jan. 27, 1952, in Winfield, to Reba Lee (Fisher) and James Newton Mooney. She attended elementary school and junior high in Udall and graduated from high school in Enterprise in 1960. She attended Union College in Lincoln, Neb.

She later received an associate's degree from Cowley County Community College and did clerical work at a variety of area businesses.

On April 2, 1988, she married Jerry Timmons in Udall. They made their home in Udall and operated a lawn care business in Wichita and the surrounding area.

In 1999 they started a personal Bible study in conjunction with the Steps to Life Ministry of the Winfield Mission of the Historic Seventh Day Adventist. Timmons was also active in the Pathfinders youth group and was the church pianist.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry Timmons, Udall; four sons, Shawn Dutcher, Udall, Jason Luse, Ponca City, Shane Timmons, Houston, and Michael Timmons, Wichita; two daughters, Ondrea Peppel, Derby, and Stephanie Timmons, Wichita; her mother, Reba Lee Mooney, Udall; a brother, Jimmie D. Mooney, Wichita; a sister, Donna I. Bower, Udall; and seven grandchildren.

Carl Criger

HOWARD – Carl Russell Criger, 83, oil producer and rancher, died May 7, 2002, at his home in Howard.

Services were at 1:30 p.m. May 9 at the Howard United Methodist Church. Burial was in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Howard United Methodist Church and Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Criger was born July 4, 1918, on the family farm six miles northwest of Howard, to Ella May (Russell) and Albert Louis Criger. He attended Lower Paw Paw rural school and graduated from Howard High School in 1937. He attended Kansas State University for a year before returning to help his father on the farm.

In 1940 Criger married Betty McClure in Howard. They divorced in 1965.

On March 2, 1967, he married Frances Mae (Wallace) Hobson in El Paso, Texas.

Criger enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943. After training he was assigned to the Eighth Air Force as a ball turret gunner on a B-24 bomber. He flew 14 bombing missions over Germany before being shot down over Keil, Germany. He survived a crash landing and was a prisoner of war for one year and 10 days.

Criger returned to Elk County and went into the oil business. He and his son drilled and produced many wells in Elk and Chautauqua counties. Criger was also a livestock producer for many years.

In the early 1970s Criger was employed by the Elk River Watershed District. He secured easements for 42 watershed dams and later served as contracting officer during their construction. Criger retired in 1987.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1186 of Independence, the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 138 in Wichita and Carter-Rader American Legion Post 149 of Howard. He was a longtime member of the Howard United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Criger, Howard; a daughter, Carla Golden, Kansas City, Mo.; a son, Patrick Criger, Kirbyville, Mo.; three stepsons, Richard Hobson, Corrales, N.M., and Jerald Hobson and William Hobson, both of El Paso, Texas; a brother, Jim Criger, and a sister, Louise Harrod, both of Howard; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Cathleen Watson

Cathleen Louise Watson, 48, died May 7, 2002, at her home in Winfield.

A private service will be held later. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with Winfield Isle of Lights Inc., 1409 Main, Winfield, KS 67156.

Watson was born Dec. 15, 1953, in Winfield, to Carol (Johnson) and LeRoy Junior Topper. She was raised in Winfield by her aunts, Jimalene Cales and Beverly Sweeney, after her mother died. She attended Winfield schools and had worked as a housekeeper for several motels.

In 1971 she married Donald Ainsworth. They later divorced.

In 1979 she married Rodney Watson. They also divorced.

Watson had lived in Winfield for the past four years after returning from Green River, Wyo.

Survivors include a son, Donovan Ainsworth, Laramie, Wyo., a daughter, Heidi Janae Watson, Green River, Wyo.; her father and stepmother, LeRoy and Marie Topper, Meadville, Miss.; a sister, Cynthia Moore, Winfield; two brothers, James Topper, Winfield, and David Topper, McComb, Miss.; a special friend, Marvin Flower, Winfield; and her aunts, Jimalene Cales, Winfield, and Beverly Sweeney, Eagle Rock, Mo.

John Bruning

Services for John William Bruning were held at 11 a.m. May 8, 2002, at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Roderick A. Hathaway officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery. American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 performed military rites.

Sandy Yount was the organist, and Gayle Walker was the vocalist. Music included “How Great Thou Art,” “When We Are Living” and “Thy Will Be Done.”

Honorary casket bearers were Jim Barnthouse, Dick Brummett, Ken Everheart, Greg Feaster, Phil Hower, Jeff Long, Brian Pingry, David Ray, Martin Ray, Ralph Russell, Austin Waite, Walt Wiltsey and Bob Wimmer.

Casket bearers were Ed Fisher, Clyde Long, Les Sallee, Bill Thornton, Jared Winter and Max Winter.

Memorials have been established with Trinity Lutheran Church and William Newton Hospital.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Wade Fite

FOX CHAPEL, Pa. – Wade L. Fite, 76, of Fox Chapel, formerly of Winfield, died Feb, 22, 2002.

He was buried near Pittsburgh, Pa.

Born in Apperson, Okla., in 1925, Fite was the son of Floe and Luther Fite. After his parents divorced, he and his mother moved to Winfield in 1930. He was baptized at age nine at the First Christian Church and graduated from Winfield High School in 1942. During high school he learned to play the oboe, which he later played in the Manila and San Diego symphonies. His oboe and English horn will be sent to Winfield High School.

During World War II, Fite served in the southwest Pacific as an Army staff sergeant. After the war, he resumed his education at the University of Kansas, where he met and married Ruby Rose Kauffman and earned a degree in physics and mathematics. He earned his doctorate in physics at Harvard University in 1951.

Fite worked on early color television tubes at the Philco Corp. in Philadelphia while teaching at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1954, he went to London to study for a year on a National Science Foundation fellowship. In 1956 he joined General Dynamics' General Atomic division in San Diego.

In 1963 Fite was hired by the University of Pittsburgh. He served as a consultant to a number of government agencies, including NASA, the National Science Foundation and the National Bureau of Standards.

In 1964 he founded Extranuclear Labs, a scientific-instrument company now known as ABB Extrel, to build mass spectrometers and other scientific instruments. He retired from the University of Pittsburgh in 1988 and from Extranuclear Labs in 1990.

From 1958 to 1963, Fite was a school board member in Encinitas, Calif.

Survivors include three sons, Christopher Fite, Fox Chapel, Pa., John Fite, Aspinwall, Pa., and Andrew Fite, Stockholm, Sweden; a daughter, Rebecca Fite, Paris; a stepsister, Peggy Greer Brown, Wichita; a stepbrother, Jack Greer, Pittsburgh, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.

Ruth Brown

NORMAN, Okla. – Ruth Murray Brown, 75, of Norman, formerly of Winfield, died May 2, 2002, in Norman.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, 1801 W. Brooks.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Southwestern College Development Office.

Brown was born Feb. 24, 1927, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Wilma Lucille (Dorth) and Alvin White Murray. From 1934 to 1940, while her father was pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, she lived in Winfield, and again from 1944 to 1948 when she was a student at Southwestern College.

After receiving her bachelor‘s degree in 1948, she married Sidney DeVere Brown.

She received a master‘s degree in sociology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Illinois, Champaign.

Brown taught sociology and political science at Rose State College, Midwest City, Okla., from 1974 to 1991. In 1992-93 she presented courses in political science at Donetsk State University in Ukraine as part of a program to bring Western social science to the successor state of the USSR.

Survivors include her husband, Sidney DeVere Brown, Norman; two daughters, Margaret Nickell, Kansas City, Mo., and Nancy Ellen Brown, Fort Collins, Colo.; two sons, Russell Murray Brown, Lexington, Ky., and Frederick Leonard Brown, Seattle; a sister, Patricia Osborn, Newton; and five grandchildren.

Julius Powell

Services for Julius C. Powell were held at 10 a.m. May 9, 2002, in Union-Graham Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Allen Polen officiated.

Music included “Amazing Grace” and “The Lord's Prayer.”

Casket bearers were Richard Bolack, Cory Young, Gary, Mike, Randy and Robert Powell and Mike Wooddell.

A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
