John Nation

John Howard Nation, 87, of 22 Fleetwood Drive, Winfield, died May 8, 2002, at his home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Highland Cemetery and 3 p.m. Sunday at the First United Methodist Church.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight. The family will greet friends from 7 to 8.

Memorials have been established with Habitat for Humanity, the First United Methodist Church and the American Heart Association.

Nation was born July 17, 1914, in Delaware, Okla., to Addie Mae (DeVan) and William Reed Nation. His father's career in the oil business took the family many places while Nation was growing up. He graduated from Caney High School in 1932.

On March 28, 1936, he married Betty Wasson in Independence.

Nation worked for Republic Oil & Refining and later for Shell Oil. In 1944 he entered the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Clearfield Naval Supply Depot in Clearfield, Utah.

After his discharge in 1946, Nation worked for the Cooperative Refining Association in Great Bend until 1962 when they moved to Winfield. Nation then founded Petroleum Enterprises Inc. and retired in 1986.

He was a member of Winfield Lodge 110 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons and American Legion Post 10. Nation served on the board of directors of Habitat for Humanity and was involved in locating properties to purchase. He was also a past director for the Eastern Kansas Oil & Gas Association.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Nation, a son, Robert J. Nation, a daughter, Nancy Nation Heinz, and a brother, Charles Nation, all of Winfield; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Carl Overley

MANHATTAN – Carl B. Overley, 80, of Manhattan, formerly of Oxford, died May 7, 2002, at Meadowlark Hills Health Care Center, Manhattan.

Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Reed will officiate. The family will receive friends before and after the service. Burial in Sunrise Cemetery will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Carl and Betty Overley Scholarship Fund-KSU Foundation or the First United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home.

Overley was born Sept. 9, 1921, in Oxford, to Elsie Mae (Forsman) and Benjamin H. Overley. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1939.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

In 1946 Overley obtained a bachelor‘s degree in agronomy from the Department of Agriculture at Kansas State Agricultural College (later known as Kansas State University). He received his master's degree from the University of Nebraska in 1967.

On Aug. 19, 1950, he married Betty C. Warren in Garnett.

Overley worked as an agronomist at Kansas State for over 41 years. He was an assistant professor of agronomy and worked in the Foundation Seed Department, specializing in seed certification and multiplication. From 1967 to 1969 he was an advisor for the Green Revolution Team of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in India. A recipient of the Premier Seed Grower's Award, Overley retired in 1987.

Overley was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as an usher and on the finance committee. He was also a member of the Klod & Kernel Club, Farm House fraternity, Manhattan Lions Club and American Society of Agronomy. He was active in Boy Scouts for many years.

An infant son, Alan Warren Overley, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Overley, and a son, Lee C. Overley, both of Manhattan; a brother, Frank L. Overley, Topeka; two sisters, Christine L. Councill, Pasadena, Md., and Laura Bell Marburger, Norman, Okla.; and three grandchildren.

Harold Leeburg

MILLER – Harold Gordon Leeburg, 79, lifelong resident of Miller, died May 9, 2002, at Newman Hospital in Emporia.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Miller United Methodist Church. The Rev. Robbie Fall will officiate. Burial will be in Osage City Cemetery.

Friends may call at Crable Funeral Chapel in Osage City from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Miller United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Leeburg was born Nov. 13, 1922, in Miller, to Edna (Holmberg) and Victor Albin Leeburg. He graduated from Miller High School in 1940.

On April 16, 1950, he married Helen Louise Lyon in Osage City.

A farmer and cattleman, Leeburg was a member of the Miller United Methodist Church where he had served on the board and in many other capacities. He was the auctioneer for the United Methodist Women's bazaar for many years. A member of the Miller 4-H in his youth, he remained active as a beef leader. He also served on the Miller school board.

A daughter, Joyce Louise Leeburg, died Aug. 6, 1960.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Leeburg, Miller; three daughters, Jill Lynn Megredy, Winfield., Janice Marie Reinhardt, Bison, and Jane Ellen Lashbrook, Bonner Springs; and six grandchildren.

Retta Timmons

Services for Retta Lee Timmons were held at 10 a.m. May 10, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Pastor John Grosboll and Isaac Padilla officiated. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery at Sedan.

Music included “I Am a Pilgrim,” “Jesus Loves Me” and “O, Glorious Love.” Sonia Bower and Derek Bower played violin and piano.

Casket bearers were Derek Bower, Jason Luse, Ryan Marsh, Jim Mooney Jr., Justin Mooney and Shane Timmons.

A memorial has been established with the Steps To Life Missions Programs.

Cathleen Watson

Services for Cathleen L. Watson were held at 2 p.m. May 10, 2002, in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated.

Memorial gifts may be made to Winfield Isle of Lights Inc., 1409 Main, Winfield, KS 67156.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Wilbur Scott

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Wilbur Scott, 80, formerly of Arkansas City, died May 5, 2002, in Sacramento.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Parker Cemetery in Arkansas City. Cremation has been effected. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Scott was born Dec. 31, 1921, in Arkansas City, to Flora (Chattam) and Paul Scott. He was raised in Arkansas City and graduated from Arkansas City High School.

During World War II, he served in the United States Navy aboard the J.F. Bell, the USS Yoachim, the USS Rockwell and the LCS 7445. He later worked as a civilian driver-chauffeur at McClellan Air Force Base.

He was a member of American Legion Post 832 of Sacramento.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Judy Graham, Cecil, Ark.; a brother, Robert Scott, Jefferson City, Mo.; and a sister, Mary Ellen Wentworth, Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Gertrude Freeman

LONGTON – Gertrude Catherine Freeman, 88, longtime resident of Longton, died May 8, 2002, at Elk Manor Nursing Home, Moline.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elk Falls United Methodist Church. Pastor Burt Santee and the Rev. Gene Riley will officiate. Burial will be in Longton Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Elk Falls United Methodist Church and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice of Wichita. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Freeman was born Feb. 22, 1914, in Union Chapel neighborhood of Chautauqua County, to Leah May (Prine) and Charles Earnest Woodworth. She graduated from Sedan High School in 1932 and taught for one year at the Fly Creek School in Chautauqua County.

On April 29, 1933, she married Fred Shannon Freeman in Fredonia. They lived on farms southwest of Longton until they built the Silver Belle Motel in Longton in 1963. They sold the motel in 1977 but continued living in Longton.

Freeman was a longtime member of the Elk Falls United Methodist Church. She was active locally, in the Chautauqua Hills Parish and on the state level in the Kansas East Conference of the United Methodist Church.

She was a member of the Longton Housing Authority, Kansas CowBelles, Kansas Electric Cooperative Auxiliary, Friendly 14 Club and Kansas Cattlewomen. She was also a past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star and held other offices in the organization.

After her husband's death March 31, 1978, she took his place on the board of directors of the Home State Bank of Longton.

Survivors include her two daughters, Judy Ransbottom, Arlington, Wash., and Madeline Stowe, Yuma, Ariz.; four granddaughters, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.

Frederick Lockhart

Services for Frederick J. Lockhart were held at 2 p.m. May 11, 2002, in Akron Cemetery. Lewis Gilbreath officiated.

Memorial contributions may be made to the USD 465 Foundation (Music Camps and Programs), 920 Millington, Winfield, KS 67156.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mable Bohannan

CEDAR VALE – Mable I. Bohannan, 75, lifelong resident of Cedar Vale, died May 11, 2002, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Christ. Burial will be in North Cedar Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with Cedar Vale Community Hospital.

Bohannan was born July 11, 1926, in Cedar Vale, to Mable I. (Luster) and Newton F. Bohannan. She was raised and educated in Cedar Vale.

For many years she farmed the family's original homestead. She also worked as a certified medical aide at the Cedar Vale nursing home.

She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include a son, Tom Basler, Cedar Vale; three brothers, Rollin Bohannan, Cedar Vale, Cecil Bohannan, Topeka, and Billy Bohannan, Bolivar, Mo.; a sister, Betty Boss, Osage City; and eight grandchildren.

Albin Loewe

ARKANSAS CITY – Albin George “Al” Loewe, 80, of Arkansas City, died May 10, 2002, at The Vyne in Wichita.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. D.J. Palmer will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.

The family will receive callers from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice for The Vyne at Crestview. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Loewe was born July 5, 1921, in Fort Smith, Ark., to Prudy M. (Kirkendall) and Albin G. Loewe Sr. He was raised and educated in Fort Smith.

On May 23, 1958, he married Wilma Joann Palmer in Arkansas City. They made their home in Phoenix. until moving to Arkansas City in 1989.

A self-employed plumber in Phoenix, Loewe was working as a security guard for Burns International at General Electric at the time of his death.

Loewe was a member of Shelton Beaty American Legion Post 18 in Arkansas City.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Joann Loewe, Arkansas City; three sons, Billy Loewe, Grand Lake, Larry Loewe, Overgaard, Ariz., and Gary Loewe, Peoria, Ariz.; two daughters, Jennifer Brower, Derby, and Joy Fry, Arkansas City; 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

A son, Danny Loewe, preceded him in death.
