Merle Russell

BELLE PLAINE – Merle Francis Russell, 87, of Belle Plaine, died June 12, 2002, at Grouse Valley Manor in Dexter.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Belle Plaine United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Belle Plaine Cemetery.

Friends may call at Hatfield-Smith Funeral Home from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. A memorial has been established with Grouse Valley Manor.

Russell was born May 16, 1915, in Wichita, to Elizabeth (Bannon) and Harry Russell.

On April 9, 1939, he married Dorothy A. Scott in Wichita. She died on Jan. 20, 1999.

Russell served with the U.S. Army.

A farmer, he was a member of the Belle Plaine United Methodist Church.

A daughter, Marilyn Richardson, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Russell, Dexter; four daughters, Jeanette Russell, Grass Valley, Calif., Annette Rutherford, North San Juan, Calif., Carol Williamson, Gilmer, Texas, and Lettye Johnston, Belle Plaine; four sisters, June Whitted, Douglass, Estelle Backstrom, Tahlequah, Okla., Dorothy Johnson, 29 Palms, Calif., and Fern Morgan, Lake Havasu, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Leon Bramhall

OAK VALLEY – Leon Terrell Bramhall, 69, of Oak Valley, died June 11, 2002, at his home north of Oak Valley.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta. The Rev. Dois Nix will officiate.

Memorials have been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Contributions may be through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Bramhall was born Oct. 14, 1932, in Mozart, Ark., to Myrtle Caladonia (Lee) and Walter C. Bramhall. He attended school and grew to manhood in the Mozart community.

As a young man he moved to Washington where he was employed in dam construction near Bridgeport, Wash.

On June 6, 1952, he married Marlene Maxine Hammers in Bridgeport.

Bramhall served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 and in the Army Reserve until 1963.

He and his family lived in Monterey, Calif., until moving to Wichita in 1959. They moved to Augusta in 1963 and to Oak Valley four and a half years ago.

Bramhall was employed for many years as a boiler operator at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Augusta.

A son, Martin Charles Bramhall, died in 1976, and an infant daughter preceded her father in death.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene Bramhall, Oak Valley; a son, Walter Bramhall, Houston, Texas; a daughter, Terri Colling, Augusta; two brothers, Gary Hill, Long Island City, N.Y., and Otis Hill, Longton; two sisters, Mabel Taylor and Diane Repass, both of Wichita; and two grandsons.

Hermine Lindsay

Hermine F. Lindsay, 72, of Winfield, died June 14, 2002, at Winfield Resthaven.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Nortonville Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5.

Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church of Winfield and the Sidwell Charitable Trust.

Lindsay was born Jan. 21, 1930, in Nortonville, to Fern (Fletcher) and Herman Lindsay. She was raised and educated in Nortonville.

For seven years she worked for Kansas Industries for the Blind in Topeka.

In 1947 she moved to Winfield where she worked for area mental health organizations. She was a Red Cross volunteer for 29 years and volunteered at the First United Methodist Church where she was a member.

Survivors include a sister, Betty Bilderback, Atchison; two nephews, two grand-nieces and three grand-nephews.

Lena Freek

NEWKIRK – Lena Dorothy Hansz Freek, 87, longtime resident of Newkirk, died June 12, 2002, in the Newkirk Nursing Center.

Services will be 1 p.m. today in Newkirk Cemetery. Pastor Danny W. Cornish will officiate.

Friends may call at Miller-Stahl Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today.

A memorial fund has been established with the Peckham Christian Church. Contributions may be made through Eastman National Bank, Box 468, Newkirk, OK 74647-0468.

Freek was born Jan. 28, 1915, in Peckham, Okla., to Anna (Bokker) and John Reints. She attended Peckham Elementary School and graduated from Newkirk High School in 1933.

In May 1937 she and Charles Howard Hansz married in Enid, Okla.

In the early 1940s Freek lived in Blackwell and worked in the glass plant and later at Kroger's and the Kress Store. She also was a relief telephone operator for the Peckham Telephone Co.

On July 29, 1951, she and Marion Freek married in Enid. They made their home in Newkirk where she helped him operate the L&M Cafe´ for several years. He died July 7, 1971.

After breaking her hip for a second time in 1991, she entered a nursing home in Ponca City and later in Tonkawa. In 1995 she moved to the Newkirk Nursing Center. She was active in the resident activities and had served as chairperson of thehe residents' council. She was also selected as resident of the month. In the late 1990s she was a representative of the Newkirk Nursing Center entered in the senior citizens' spelling contest in Enid.

Freeks was a member of the Newkirk Church of Christ, the Rebecca Lodge and the Newkirk Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary. She was a volunteer for the Newkirk Nutrition Center and received an award for her services in the 1970s. She served as a vote counter in her precinct for many years.

Survivors include a daughter, Loretta J. Hansz, Ponca City; two stepdaughters, Emma Landers, Newkirk, and Bertha McCall, St. Joseph, Mo.; two stepsons, Raymond Freek, New Mexico, and Larry Freek, Newkirk; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Mary Marshall

Services for Mary Irene Marshall were held at 10 a.m. June 14 at Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. K.B. Murray officiated.

Special music included “In the Garden,” “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.”

Casket bearers were Mark Fleenor, Ray Fleenor and Ed Gray.

Memorials have been established with the Millington Street Baptist Church and the American Diabetes Association.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Spencer

Services for Robert Leon Spencer were held at 10:30 a.m. June 14 at Blessing Heights Church of God in Arkansas City. Pastor Timothy Smith officiated. Burial was in Parker Cemetery.

Lynn Merritt was the vocalist. Rhnea Smith was the pianist. Music was “In the Garden,” “I'll Fly Away” and Oh I Want to See Him.”

Honorary casket bearers were Spencer's grandsons.

Casket bearers were Don Scott, Kevin Pike, Ed White, Bob Brumback, Rod Smith and Wayne Ammerman.

Memorials may be made to Blessing Heights Church of God and the American Diabetes Association.

Hawks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Clarence Palmer

PONCA CITY – Clarence Edward Palmer, 65, longtime resident of Ponca City, formerly of Winfield, died June 13, 2002, at his home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church Worship Center. The Revs. Raymond J. Petties Jr. and Matthew Davis Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery. Grace Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1357, Ponca City, OK 74602-1357, or to Hospice of Ponca City, 1904 N. Union, Suite 103, Ponca City, OK 74601.

The family will be at 900 S. 11th.

Palmer was born May 22, 1937, in Winfield, to Leona (Brown) and Everett C. Palmer. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1956 and attended Cowley County Community College.

On May 7, 1957, he married Martha L. Wiley in Newkirk.

Palmer was employed at Conoco Inc. for 27 years until retiring as a financial coordinator in 1993. Conoco presented him with its community service award.

An outstanding basketball player during his school years, Palmer played Amateur Athletic Union basketball for 15 years and was a member of the 1963 championship team in the Missouri Valley Association AAU. In 1972 he was voted into the Kansas Independent Basketball Hall of Fame in recognition of being an 11-year veteran of the Kansas All-Star Basketball Tournament.

He also played men's slow-pitch softball for many years and refereed area basketball. He coached men's basketball, women's softball and Little League football, basketball and baseball. He served on the YMCA board of directors and the Ponca City Park and Recreation Board

Palmer served as Parent Teacher Association president at Attucks School and was also active in the Garfield School PTA. He was a Boy Scout master and a board member of the Attucks Community Center. Most recently he served as a member of the State of Oklahoma Eighth Judicial Court Community Sentencing Planning Council. One of his duties was being a youth counselor. He was also a mentor for the Helping One Student at a Time program at Garfield Academy.

A member and trustee of St. John Baptist Church, Palmer was a member of the brotherhood, chairman of the building fund and an usher.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Palmer, and a son, Greg Palmer, both of Ponca City; two daughters, Michelle Washington, Raytown, Mo., and Marsha Palmer-Thelwell, Lees Summit, Mo.; a brother, Clifford Johnson, Winfield; and three granddaughters.

Judy Beavers
JACKSONVILLE, Ore. – Judith Sue “Judy” (Rexroad) Beavers, 66, of Jacksonville, formerly of Winfield, died June 17, 2002, at her home.

A remembrance with close friends and family will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at 965 Beverly Way, Jacksonville. A remembrance will also be held in Winfield on July 20 with the time to be announced by Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives in Medford, Ore.

Beavers was born July 29, 1935, in Winfield. She graduated from Winfield High School.

On Nov. 12, 1954, she married Herb Beavers in Winfield. They had resided in Jacksonville since 1965.

A clerical assistant in the Medford school district and at Phoenix (Ore.) High School, Beavers retired in 1994.

Survivors include her husband, Herb Beavers, Jacksonville; three sons, Stacy Beavers and Phil Beavers, both of Medford, and Brad Beavers, Jacksonville; a brother, Bill Rexroad, Hutchinson; her twin sister, Phyllis Parker, Medford; and three grandchildren.

George Bannon

DOUGLASS – George M. Bannon, 86, of Douglass, died June 16, 2002, at Augusta Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Douglass Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m Thursday. The family will greet visitors between 7 and 8.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Bannon was born Feb. 27, 1916, on a farm in Butler County to Ida Mae (Chance) and Wesley L. Bannon. He was raised and educated in Rose Hill.

On Nov. 22, 1941, he married Shirley Young in Udall. They made their first home in Douglass.

Bannon was a farmer and cattleman for a number of years before he became active in horse training. He was a licensed member of the Thoroughbred Horse Training Association.

He and his family lived many places during his career. After his retirement in 1981, they returned to Douglass.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Bannon, and a son, George R. Bannon, both of Douglass; a brother, Clarence Bannon, Fort Morgan, Colo.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
