George Bannon

Services for George Morton Bannon were held at 2 p.m. June 21, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Burial was in Douglass Cemetery.

Bannon's grandson, Raeford Bannon, gave the eulogy and family tribute.

Music included “Beyond the Sunset” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?”

Casket bearers were Dick Albright, George W. Bannon, Raeford Bannon, Shayne Bannon, Garold Cox and Wayne Matheny.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.

Julia Redburn

WICHITA – Julia “Judy” Haworth Redburn, 85, a homemaker, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield and El Dorado, died June 20, 2002.

The Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, both at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Andover. Downing & Lahey Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 123 N. Andover Road, Andover, KS 67002.

Redburn was born March 22, 1917, in Logan, Ill., to Genevieve (Eovaldi) and August Mariani. She graduated from St. Louis University.

During World War II she served as a registered nurse in the U.S. Army.

Her first husband, Major Bill Haworth, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Al Redburn, and a stepson, Alfred L. Redburn II, both of Wichita; a grandson and a great-grandson.

Minnie Simkins and Charles Simkins

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Minnie Maurine (Hamilton) Simkins, 83, died Nov. 23, 1998, in Kansas City, Kan. Charles Leonard Simkins, 94, died June 14, 2002, also in Kansas City,

A private service will be held today for burial of their cremains in Grace Lawn Cemetery at Howard. The Rev. Ted. D. Davis will officiate.

A memorial has been established with a hospice. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Maurine Simkins was born Sept. 10, 1915, in Murray, Iowa, to Maude Hayes and David Hamilton. The family moved to Elk Falls where she graduated from high school. She went to college in Emporia where she met her future husband, Charles Simkins. They married June 22, 1941, in Emporia.

Charles Simkins was born Sept. 21, 1907, in Reading, to Lucy Ann Caldwell and Jeremiah Simkins. He attended Border High School in Reading and went to college in Emporia where he majored in French and Spanish.

Maurine taught school in Gardner while Charles taught in Reading. In 1941 Charles was called to active duty in the U.S. Army and served one year overseas in the medical corps while his wife attended business college.

When Charles returned, he worked in civil service with the Railroad Retirement Board while Maurine worked for several businesses, including Kenworth and Mobay, until her retirement. They moved to the Kansas City area where they lived and worked the rest of their lives.

Survivors include a daughter, Annette English, Kansas City, Kan., and a granddaughter. Maurine is also survived by her brother, Dale Hamilton, Howard.

Margaret Scott

GROVE, Okla. – Margaret E. Scott, 88, of Grove, formerly of Winfield, died in Grove June 20, 2002.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, Winfield. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church or Good Shepherd Hospice in Grove.

Scott was born April 18, 1914, in Cowley County, to Maggie and Elmer Smith. She was raised and educated in the Latham area and graduated from Latham High School in 1932.

On May 10, 1937, she married Hoyt Scott in Cowley County. They lived in Raymond until her husband retired from Texaco in 1972 and they moved to Winfield.

Scott was a member of the First Baptist Church and had been active in church circles and other church activities.

Because of failing health, she moved to Grove a year ago to be near her daughter.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Milsap, Grove, Okla.; a son, Jerry Scott, Dallas; a sister, Helen Long, Alva, Okla.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Oletha Goforth-Johnston

ARKANSAS CITY – Oletha Bernice Goforth-Johnston, 73, of Arkansas City, died June 22, 2002, at the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Riverview Cemetery. Pastor Keenan Poore will officiate. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Goforth-Johnston was born Jan. 27, 1929, in Hartshorne, Okla., to Evadna (Grammer) and Raymond Price. She attended the Clayton, Okla., high school.

On May 5, 1950, she married Frank L. Goforth. He died in 1986.

On April 4, 1994, she married Eugene Johnston in Arkansas City where they made their home.

Goforth-Johnston worked for the food service at Jefferson Elementary School for many years.

She was a member of the Friends Church of Arkansas City.

Survivors include her husband, Gene Johnston, Arkansas City; a son, Don Goforth, Peeples Valley, Ariz.; two daughters, Doris Perkins, Arkansas City, and Carol Courtney, Wellington; four sisters, Norma Jean Poore, Andover, Winona Brown, Pawhuska, Okla., Wanda Price, Medford, Okla., and Brenda Blowers, El Dorado; three brothers, James Price, Aliceville, Stanley Price, Orange Park, Fla., and Roger Price, Silsbee, Texas; and seven grandchildren.

Rachel Helton

WELLINGTON – Rachel Helton, 99, of Wellington, died June 23, 2002, in Wellington.

Hawks Funeral Home of Wellington will announce arrangements.

Billie Porter

NORMAN, Okla. – Verda “Billie” Porter, 86, of Norman, formerly of Winfield, died June 24, 2002, in Norman.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Norman Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery. The Rev. David Spain will officiate.

Porter was born Oct. 3, 1915, in Nebraska, to Mary (Peterson) and Harry Markley. She grew up in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School.

In 1940 she married Chester Porter in Kansas. From 1940 to 1977 she worked in the trucking business with her husband. They moved to Norman in 1987.

Survivors include her husband, Chester Porter, and a daughter, Sandra Lovin, both of Norman; a stepson, Carl Porter, Russellville, Ark.; a stepdaughter, Ann Banks, Prescott Valley, Ariz.; a sister, Lola Clodfelter, and two brothers, Wayne Markley and Buck Markley, all of Winfield; and two grandchildren.

Josiah Burner

LATHAM – Josiah Alan Burner, 16, of Latham, died there on June 20, 2002.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Latham Cemetery. Carlson Funeral Home of El Dorado is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Willie Burner for something to be decided on at a later date.

Burner was born Sept. 16, 1985, in Wichita, to Laura (Pond) and William S. Burner. A student, he spent most of his life in Latham.

Survivors include his parents, Willie and Laura Burner, and two brothers, Jeremy Burner and Jacob Burner, all of Latham; and his grandparents, Gene and Ann Pond, Leon, and Vern and Opal M. Knudsen, Eureka.

Kenneth Sutton

PAMPA, Texas – Kenneth Earl Sutton, 59, of Pampa, died June 20, 2002, in Paris, France.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Pampa. Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established with the First Presbyterian Church, 525 N. Gray, Pampa, TX 79065, and the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1981, Pampa, TX 79066-1981.

Sutton was born May 6, 1943, in Kansas City, Mo, and graduated from high school in 1961. He received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Kansas State University in 1970 after serving with the U.S. Army in Vietnam.

In 1970 he married Judith Ann Campbell in Winfield, and they moved to Pampa in 1980.

Sutton was certified as a professional engineer and was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He worked for Celanese Ltd. until retiring in 2000.

Sutton was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of a Sunday school class at the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Sutton, and two daughters, Loraine Hendricks and Grace Nelson, all of Pampa; his father, Earl Kenneth Sutton, and a sister, Susan Rosetti, both of Missouri; and four grandchildren.

Betty Anderson

Betty L. Anderson, 72, of 621 E. Eighth, Winfield, died June 24, 2002, at her residence.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in New Salem Cemetery northeast of Winfield.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5 to 9 tonight.

Anderson was born Feb. 14, 1930, in Winfield, to Cora Mae (Kimsey) and William Barnickle. She was raised and educated in Winfield.

On Nov. 26, 1948, she married Alexander A. “Jack” Anderson in Bentonville, Ark. From 1962 to 1976 they owned and operated the Pla-Mor Club tavern and the St. James Hotel in Winfield. They resided in Wilmot and Burden before returning to Winfield in 1983. Her husband died July 15, 1996.

Survivors include four sons, Jackie Lee Anderson, Formosa, Robert Dean “Butchie” Anderson, Ludawici, Ga., Rickey Alex Anderson, Virginia Beach, Va., and Bobby Dean Anderson, Winfield; four daughters, Linda Lou Scott, Oxford, Phyllis Jean Munson, Stroud, Okla., Jacqueline Sue Finney, Lancaster, Ohio, and Debra Lynn Tackett, Winfield; a brother, Raymond Lee Barnickle, Wichita; a sister, Lola Mae Davis, Arkansas City; 30 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

John Marshall

ABILENE – John S. Marshall, 62, of Abilene, formerly of Winfield, died June 23, 2002, at Abilene Memorial Hospital.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Xavier Catholic Church. The Rev. Al Brungardt will officiate. Burial will be in Fort Riley Cemetery.

Friends may call at Johnson Funeral Chapel from 6 to 8 tonight. A vigil service will be held at 7:30.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 5375 SW 7th St., Topeka, KS 66606.

Marshall was born Aug. 2, 1939, in Amarillo, Texas, to Georgia Mae (Knuckey) and John Marshall. He graduated from Winfield High School and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Kansas State University.

On June 15, 1963, he married Irma Porer in Winfield.

Marshall retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service. For seven years he worked for the Geary County Health Department as a child care inspector, and for three years he worked as a regional child care inspector for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

He was a member of St. Xavier Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Irma Marshall, Abilene; three sons, Josef Marshall and Stan Marshall, both of Junction City, and John Marshall, Lawrence; a brother, David Marshall, Lyons; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
