Betty Courtney
Betty Ruth Courtney, 76, of 716 Tweed, Winfield, died June 24, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5 to 9 tonight. The family will greet friends from 7 to 8.
A memorial has been established with the Winfield Soroptimist Club. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Courtney was born Aug. 6, 1925, in Wilmot, to Cecile (Maxwell) and Leonard Bailey. She was raised in Burden and graduated from Burden High School in 1943.
On Sept. 1, 1946, she married Ira Eugene Courtney in Hutchinson. They lived in Wichita, Dodge City and Gunnison, Colo., before moving to Winfield in 1963. In Winfield the couple owned the KNIC radio station where she was business manager until retiring in 1987. Her husband died Oct. 4, 1991.
Courtney was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Soroptimist Club, Sweet Adelines and Order of Eastern Star chapters in Burden and Winfield.
Survivors include two sons, Donald Courtney, Lansing, and Richard Courtney, North Kingstown, R.I.; two brothers, Don Bailey, Burden, and Maxwell Bailey, Winfield; a sister, Doris Lewis, Marion, Iowa; and three grandchildren.
Margaret Scott
Services for Margaret E. Scott were held at 10:30 a.m. June 25, 2002, at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Jackie Allen officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Dale Fruits, Merle Raber, Glen Scott, Clayton Scott, Josh Allen and Ryan Milsap.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church in Winfield or Good Shepard Hospice in Grove, Okla.
Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Rachel Helton
WELLINGTON – Rachel Helton, 99, of Wellington, died June 22, 2002.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Assembly of God Church. The Rev. Charles Taff will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Highland Cemetery
in Medicine Lodge. Hawks Funeral Home, Wellington, is in charge of arrangements.
Friends may call at the church from 6 to 8 tonight.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Assembly of God Church.
Helton, a homemaker, was active in the Assembly of God Church.
Her husband, William Lee Helton, and an infant son preceded her in death.
Survivors include four sons, Billie Lyle Helton, Vernon “Tiny” Helton, Harold Lee Helton and Darrel Gene Helton; a daughter, Darlene Gibson; five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Rodney Maynard
Rodney Maynard, 78, of Cumbernauld Village, Winfield, died there Feb. 27, 2002.
Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday in Highland Cemetery. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Maynard was born Nov. 15, 1923, in Chicago, to Grace (English) and Herbert Kindt Maynard. Raised and educated in Evanston, Ill., he entered the Army Air Corps right out of high school and became a B-17 pilot.
In 1948 he married Mina Mae (Saucie) Cloud. She died in 1993.
Maynard was an electronics engineer and worked for many of the Wichita electronics and airplane companies. From the 1950s on, he considered Winfield his home, although his work took him across the United States. He retired in 1977.
Survivors include two daughters, Misty Maynard, Kechi, and Storme Maynard, Mission.
Leon Roberts
GRANITE BAY, Calif. – Leon J. Roberts, 31, of Granite Bay, formerly of Winfield and Wichita, died June 10, 2002, in Fresno, Calif.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Millington Street Baptist Church in Winfield.
Burial was in Vernon Memorial Park in Fair Oaks, Calif.

Roberts was born Aug. 27, 1971, in Winfield, to Shirley and Don Roberts. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1989.
A veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Army, Roberts had recently moved from Kingman, Ariz., to Granite Bay.
Survivors include his wife, Sherry Roberts, a son, Bryan Roberts, and a daughter, Aimee Roberts, all of Granite Bay; and his parents, Don and Shirley Roberts, his brother, Donald J. Roberts, his sister, Rebecca Roberts, and his grandfather, Jerry Hood, all of Wichita.
Betty Anderson
NEW SALEM – Services for Betty L. Anderson were held at 2 p.m. June 27, 2002, in New Salem Cemetery. The Rev. Tom Boese officiated.
Music recordings included “One Day at at Time,” by Cristy Lane, “The Old Rugged Cross,” by Ray Price,” and “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” by Vince Gill.
Casket bearers were Anderson's grandsons.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Laura Belle Haines was the organist. Martin Rude sang “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” and “Amazing Grace.”
Casket bearers were Bruce, Mike and Paul Bailey and Norman Courtney.

Lucille Nickel
ARKANSAS CITY – Lucille Evelyn Nickel, 87, of Arkansas City, died June 28, 2002, at Alterra-Sterling House.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Pastor Roy Renolett will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Nickel was born Dec. 26, 1914, in Arkansas City, to Beulah (West) and Joseph Mickley. She was raised in Burden and graduated from Burden High School in 1932. She later graduated from Arkansas City Junior College.
She worked at Walgreen Drug Store in Topeka until 1937.
On July 17, 1937, she married Elton J. Nickel in Topeka, and they made their home in Milwaukee, Wis. She returned to Kansas in 1947.
In Arkansas City she assisted her mother in the management and operation of State Rooms Hotel on South Summit from 1954 to 1981.
A daughter, Kathleen Nickel, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Robert E. Nickel, Ojai, Calif.; a half-brother, Ronald Mickley, Rehrersburg, Pa.; and a stepsister, Anne Alexander, Burden.
Eldon Whiteman
ATLANTA – G. Eldon Whiteman, 62, of Atlanta, died June 28, 2002, of injuries sustained in a vehicle accident east of Winfield.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Timber Creek Cemetery
east of Atlanta.
A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Whiteman was born Nov. 26, 1939, in Atlanta, to Selma (Dudeck) and Albert Whiteman. He was raised and educated in Atlanta and graduated from Atlanta High School in 1957.
On May 13, 1961, he married Christine F. Sandstrum in Liberal. They made their home in Atlanta.
Whiteman worked on Blair Ranch in Butler County for a few years before he farmed independently. In August 1982 he began work for the Cowley County Highway Department. He led a crew of 11 men who worked for Road and Bridge District 3 at Burden.
Whiteman was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Latham, the Butler County Shrine and Midian Shrine Temple in Wichita.
A son, Michael Craig Whiteman, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Whiteman, a son, Brent Whiteman, and a daughter, Kristie Ball, all of Atlanta; two brothers, Russell Whiteman, Burden, and Earl Whiteman, Albuquerque, N.M.; three sisters, Nina Schaad, Newburg, Ore., Eunice Mullen, Agra, Okla., and Arlene Otto, Burden; a granddaughter and three stepgrandchildren.
Diane Webster-Howell
WICHITA – Jerolyn Diane Webster-Howell, 55, of Wichita, formerly of Howard, died June 30, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard. Pastor Robin Haines will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the American Institute for Cancer Research. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Survivors include her husband, Dan Howell, Wichita; a son, Kevin Dilli, Hutchinson; a stepson, Joshua Howell, Wellington; two stepdaughters, Danelle Howell, Wellington, and Amanda Howell, Hutchinson; her mother, Coretta Webster, Howard; a brother, Doug Webster, Towanda; three grandchildren, nine stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Hallie Crabtree
EL DORADO – Hallie A. Crabtree, 94, of El Dorado, died June 30, 2002, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Kirby-Morris Funeral Home. Burial will be in Latham Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Crabtree was born April 11, 1908, in Latham, to Margaret F. (Swisher) and William E. Crabtree. He graduated from Latham High School.
On Feb. 20, 1932, he married Zelda Ward in Winfield. They celebrated their 70th anniversary this year.
Crabtree worked for the Martin, Wesley Moore and John K. Fisher automotive companies and retired as the sales manager for John K. Fisher.
Crabtree was a longtime member of the First Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Zelda Crabtree, and a brother, John Crabtree, both of El Dorado.
