Diane Webster-Howell
WICHITA – Jerolyn Diane Webster-Howell, 55, of Wichita, formerly of Howard, died June 30, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard. Pastor Robin Haines will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the American Institute for Cancer Research. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Webster-Howell was born Nov. 6, 1946, in Winfield, to Coretta Alice (Morris) and Dallas E. Webster. She graduated from Howard High School in 1964.
She graduated from business college in Wichita and worked as a legal assistant until 1989 when she became a property manager for Fidelity Property Management. She was a member of the Apartment Managers Association.
On Dec. 15, 1995, she married Dan Joseph Howell in Hutchinson. They made their home in Wichita.
A Wichita resident most of her life, Webster-Howell recently retired due to ill health.
Survivors include her husband, Dan Howell, Wichita; a son, Kevin Dilli, Hutchinson; a stepson, Joshua Howell, Wellington; two stepdaughters, Danelle Howell, Wellington, and Amanda Howell, Hutchinson; her mother, Coretta Webster, Howard; a brother, Doug Webster, Towanda; three grandchildren, nine stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Eldon Whiteman
Services for G. Eldon Whiteman were held at 10 a.m. July 2, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Pastors Larry Womacks and Dennis King officiated.
Burial was in Timber Creek Cemetery
at Atlanta. The Latham Lodge of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons performed special committal ceremonies.
Music included “Grandpa,” by The Judds, “Beyond the Sunset,” by Red Foley, and “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” by Vince Gill.
Honorary casket bearers were Dale Bartel, Loel Bohannon, James Brown, Royce DeVaughn, John Donley, David Lawson, Robert O'Bryan, Scotty Sage, Dale Steward, Jimmy Schooley, Daron Triplett, Gary Ventle and Larry Yarbrough.
Casket bearers were Edgar Clark, Vernon Dennett, Rod Dudeck, Bill Gates, Bob Gates, John Newton, Larry Price and Ronnie Whiteman.
A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association.
Richard Patterson
GARDEN CITY – C. Richard Patterson, 63, died June 25, 2002, at his home in Garden City.
Services will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Presbyterian Church in Garden City. The Rev. Dave Sweley will officiate.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Western Kansas Community Foundation or any charity. Contributions may be made through Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main, Garden City, KS 67846.
Patterson was born June 18, 1939, in Garden City, to Pauline (Chuesberg) and Orville Merritt Patterson. He graduated from the University of Kansas.
A lifetime resident of Garden City, he owned Patterson Jewelry.
A member of the Garden City Presbyterian Church, Patterson was also involved in the local and state Miss America organization. He had received American Gem Society honors and had been recognized for many achievements in gemology.
Survivors include a daughter, Somer Lee Patterson, Winfield; his mother, Pauline Patterson, and a sister, Paulasue Sawyers, both of Garden City; and a brother, Robert O. Patterson, Atlanta, Ga.
Floyd Rankin
Floyd I. Rankin, 87, longtime resident of Winfield, died July 1, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center, Arkansas City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Rankin was born April 17, 1915, in Guthrie, Okla., to Mammie (Work) and William Rankin. When he was a child, his family moved to Ashton where he was raised and educated. As a young man, he moved to Topeka where he attended a vocational technical school for auto mechanics.
On March 10, 1935, he married Cleopatra Cochran, and they made their home in Winfield. She died April 1, 1995, soon after they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Rankin worked for the City of Winfield in the operations department for 42 years. He also did custodial work at Snyder Clinic.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Charles Rankin, Wichita, and Larry Rankin, Petaluma, Calif.; a daughter, Sharon Banfill, Arkansas City; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Lulavown Nicholas
CEDAR VALE – Lulavown Nicholas, 83, of Cedar Vale, died July 4, 2002, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Cedar Vale Cemetery.
Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home until 8 tonight.
Nicholas was born April 15, 1919, in Sedan, to Florence Ida (Mayberry) and Christopher Shawver. She was raised and educated in Blackwell, Dexter and Maple City.
On April 24, 1935, she married Thomas Nicholas in Sedan. He preceded her in death.
Nicholas was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Keith Nicholas, Wolfe City, Texas; a daughter, Linda Scott, Independence; a sister, Caroleen Mueller, Arkansas City; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Aurelio Carro
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Dr. F. Aurelio Carro, 81, of Coral Gables, formerly of Winfield, died June 25, 2002, in Coral Gables.
Services were held June 28 at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn in Miami.
Memorial contributions may be made to Vitas Hospice Charitable Fund, 123 S.E. Third Ave., PBM 110, Miami, FL 33131.
Carro was born Oct. 20, 1920, in Cienfuegos, Cuba. He attended medical school at the University of Havana and graduated in 1948.
In Cienfuegos he specialized in pediatric cardiology and also attended general medical patients. He was director of the Colonial Sanitarium of Cienfuegos and The Foundation for Poor Children at the institution. He also donated his time to the Red Cross of Cuba.
In 1962 he immigrated to the United States. He was clinical director of Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for 10 years and then joined the Snyder Clinic. Carro retired in 1985.
He had been a resident of south Florida for 14 years.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Maria Pilar Carro, Coral Gables; four sons, Aurelio Carro, Coral Gables, Alberto and Andy Carro, both of Wichita, and Tony Carro, Mulvane; and five grandchildren.

Emma Goodwin
Emma G. “Goody” Goodwin, 96, longtime resident of Winfield, died July 3, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Memorials have been established with Tisdale United Methodist Church and Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Goodwin was born March 24, 1906, in Winfield, to Matilda Laura (Liermann) and Alfred Newton Gann. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1924.
On Feb. 27, 1926, she married Kenneth Daniel Goodwin in Winfield. They moved to Little Rock, Ark., and in 1938 opened the seven-lane GMB Recreation Center. In 1943 the Goodwins became co-owners/operators of the 10-lane Center Lanes and acquired full ownership in 1946. In 1961 they sold Center Lanes and then opened and operated Goodwin's Pro Shop.
In 1964, they retired from bowling and moved to Winfield. Goodwin's husband died March 22, 1978.
In 1982, Goodwin was the second inductee into the Little Rock Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame. She and her husband were the first husband and wife inducted. She was a charter member of the Arkansas State Women's Bowling Association.
Goodwin was a member of Tisdale United Methodist Church and a 28-year member of the Pleasant View Homemakers Extension Unit.
Survivors include a brother, Lawrence Gann, Winfield.
Paula Lanning
HOWARD – Paula Beryl Lanning, 63, of Howard, died July 3, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services will be at 2 p.m Monday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. Pastor Robin Haines will officiate. Burial will be in Cresco Cemetery, north of Howard.
A memorial has been established with Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.
Lanning was born Dec. 6, 1938, in Howard, to Pauline (Corbin) and Kenneth Owen Smith. She graduated from Howard High School in 1957.
On Aug. 9, 1975, she married Billy Eugene Lanning Sr. in Miami, Okla., and they made their home in Howard.
A homemaker, Lanning was employed as a waitress during most of her life.
Survivors include her husband, Bill Lanning, and a daughter, Brandy Lanning, both of Howard; a son, Lonnie Smith, Wichita; five stepsons, Billy Lanning Jr., Howard, Richard Lanning, Liberal, Robert Lanning, Hays, David Lanning, Cherryvale, and Keith Lanning, Independence; two brothers, Ron Smith, Haysville, and Don Smith, Wichita; two grandchildren, nine stepgrandchildren and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.
