Reba Forney

NORMAN, Okla. – Reba Augusta Forney, 82, of Norman, died June 25, 2002, in California.

Services were held at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church with burial in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Norman. Havenbrook Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Forney was born Oct. 4, 1919, in Mifflin, W.Va., to John and Cora (Harless) Thompson. She grew up in West Virginia and married J.C. Forney during World War II.

She spent many years in Winfield before moving to Colorado in 1968. She was an assistant deputy county clerk in Golden, Colo., for 10 years.

Forney had lived in Norman since 1981 and was a member of McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Jim Forney, Norman; a daughter, Sherry Welch, Anaheim Hills, Calif.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Robert Hudson

Robert E. Hudson, 80, of Winfield, died July 9, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 tonight. The family will greet visitors from 7 to 8.

Memorials have been established with the Kansas Masonic Home in Wichita and the Children's Miracle Network. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Hudson was born July 5, 1922, in Quinton, Okla., to Dollie (Russell) and Ezra J. Hudson. He was raised in Cherryvale where he graduated from high school in 1940.

On March 9, 1943, he married Betty Louise Drotts in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Shortly after marrying, he entered the U.S. Air Force and served during World War II and the Korean War. He received numerous medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Force Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

During his military career, Hudson and his family lived in many places, including Louisiana, Tripoli and North Africa. In 1967 he retired as a master sergeant.

Hudson then worked in Arkansas City at Green Light Auto Supply and at Wal-Mart as an electronics supervisor and sporting goods department manager. He retired in 2001.

Hudson was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and Masonic Lodge 110 of Winfield.

Darrell Ames

PONCA CITY – Darrell Dwayne Ames, 68, of Ponca City, died July 8, 2002, at his home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Christ's Church in Newkirk. The Rev. Lynn Schuyler will officiate. Burial will be in Newkirk Cemetery. Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk, is in charge of arrangements.

Ames was born Feb. 13, 1934, in Winfield, to Winifred E. (Williams) and Darrel Jasper Ames. The family moved to Newkirk, then to Udall, Cedar Vale, Winfield and back to Newkirk in 1950. Ames received most of his education in Winfield.

In 1952 he joined the U.S. Air Force. At the time of his discharge in 1960, he was serving with the 4123rd Field Maintenance Squadron. He then joined Lear Zeigler Co. as a field supervisor.

On Sept. 4, 1965, he married Mary Frances Purdon in San Juan, Puerto Rico. They established their first home there and did extensive traveling for Lear in the United States and abroad. While living in Alaska, Ames operated a well drilling business and worked as a land developer. After retiring from Lear, the Ameses moved from Alaska to Tenkiller, Okla., and bought a fruit orchard. In 1978 they returned to Newkirk where he developed Emerald Lake Estates. He also worked for National Capital Life Insurance.

In 1988 Ames and his wife moved to Conway, Ark., and established the Fore More Co. selling nutritional supplements. In 1994 he sold the company and they moved to Arizona and then to Colorado. They returned to Ponca City in 1999.

Ames was a past member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Fran Ames, Ponca City; three sons, Kevin Ames, South Fork, Colo., Dwayne Ames, Hawaii, and Daniel Ames, Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Teresa Joline Smith, Kansas City, Mo.; three brothers, Dennis Ames, Winfield, Kerry Ames, Durango, Colo., and Mike Ames, Ponca City; four sisters, Sonja Gregory, Newkirk, Mildred Smith, Manford, Okla., Sharon Kling, South Fork, Colo., and Deanna Cantwell, Ponca City; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Donald Shanks

ARKANSAS CITY – Donald F. Shanks, 52, of Arkansas City, formerly of Wellington, died July 8, 2002.

Private services were held Wednesday. Hawks Funeral Home was in charge of cremation.

Shanks was born Feb. 1, 1950, in Ashflat, Ark. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1968.

Survivors include two daughters, Kristy McCully-Shanks, Oxford, and Candice Neal-Shanks, Derby; and three brothers, Ron Shanks, Navoto, Calif., and David Shanks and John Shanks, both of Wellington.

Connie Rogers

SCOTT CITY – Connie Rogers, 81, of Scott City, formerly of Arkansas City, died July 11, 2002, at Scott County Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Scott City. The Rev. Lynne Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery.

Friends may call at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday.

Memorials have been established with Scott County Emergency Medical Technicians. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Rogers was born Sept. 14, 1920, in Clearwater, to Ruby E. (Martin) and Charles R. Harrington.

On June 15, 1941, she married Richard James Rogers in Winfield. A homemaker, she and her family moved from Arkansas City to Scott City in 1949.

Rogers was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Rogers, Scott City; two sons, Steven L. Rogers, Topeka, and Brent A. Rogers, Scott City; two daughters, Laylene Janssen, Scott City, and Kathleen A. Settles, San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Harold Harrington, Mulvane, and a sister, Geraldine Young, Wellington.

Loretta Lathers

SOUTH HAVEN – Loretta Kay Lathers, 64, of South Haven, died July 11, 2002, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Newkirk Cemetery. The Rev. Dennis Clough will officiate.

Friends may call at Miller-Stahl Funeral Home in Newkirk from 1 to 5 this afternoon, from 1 to 9 Sunday and until 10:30 a.m. Monday.

Memorials have been established with Trinity Hospice of Wichita, the Rest Haven Activity Fund and the South Haven Fair Association. Contributions may be made through Eastman National Bank, P.O. Box 468, Newkirk, OK 74647-0468.

Lathers was born Feb. 16, 1938, in Blackwell, to Bessie Marie (Morris) and Jesse David Forbeck. When she was a child, the family moved to the Newkirk area where she attended the OK Rural School until sixth grade. The family then moved northwest of Newkirk and she finished her education in Braman, graduating from high school there in 1956.

On June 1, 1956, she married Jerry Lathers in Blackwell. They moved from Blackwell to South Haven in 1967.

Lathers worked at the Village Restaurant and the Winfield Sale Barn Restaurant. After she retired in 2000, she became a part-time employee at the Kansas Tourist Center.

She was a member of the South Haven Christian Church.

Survivors include two sons, Curtis Lathers, Newkirk, and Kevin Lathers, South Haven; a brother, Tommy Forbeck, Geuda Springs; and four grandchildren.

Barbara Ridgway

CEDAR VALE – Barbara M. Ridgway, 88, of Cedar Vale, died July 13, 2002, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home from 4 to 8 tonight.

A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Ridgway was born July 10, 1914, in Atlanta, to Mabel (Haver) and Roy Price. She was raised and educated in the Atlanta area.

On March 1, 1932, she married Fred W. Bennett in Winfield. He died Feb. 21, 1988, after 55 years of marriage.

On July 27, 1991, she married Charles Ridgway in Cedar Vale.

A longtime member of the United Methodist Church, Ridgway had lived in Atlanta, Cambridge, Corwin, Hazelton and Stafford before moving to Cedar Vale in the early 1980s.

A son, Stanley Bennett, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Ridgway, Cedar Vale; a son, Larry E. Bennett, Fort Collins, Colo.; a daughter, Sharon Bennett McKee, Talala, Okla.; five stepchildren; two sisters, Jean Keller, Olathe, and Jacque Butlar, Quincy, Ill; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Loyd Fear

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – Loyd Kenneth Fear, 69, of Independence, formerly of Longton, died July 12, 2002, at Maywood Terrace Living Center, Independence.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Longton Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard.

Fear was born July 22, 1932, in Longton, to Lottie Lina (Montgomery) and Frank Leroy Fear. He graduated from Longton High School in 1952 and attended Pittsburg State University and Wichita Business College.

For a brief time, he worked in aircraft manufacturing in Wichita and was employed at the Longton Co-op for several years. He was a farmer for most of his life and worked in construction in the Kansas City area until his retirement.

Fear was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 101, in Kansas City, Mo., and a longtime member of Carson Masonic Lodge 132 of Elk City.

Survivors include a sister, Nadine Coy, Greenwood, Ind.

Thomas Shorter

LONG BEACH, Miss. – Thomas Joseph Shorter, 60, of Long Beach, died July 12, 2002, in Gulfport, Miss.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Moline Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Survivors include Shorter's wife, Mary Lou Shorter, Long Beach; two sons, Michael Shorter, Ponca City, and Tommy Lowry, Oxford; a daughter, Paula Shetterly, Atlanta, Ga.; his brother, Steve Shorter, Hutchinson; and four grandchildren.

Rexford Sherman

Rexford L. Sherman, 84, of Winfield, died July 13, 2002, at his home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery in Wichita.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with the Walnut Towers Activity Fund.

Sherman was born Aug. 11, 1917, in Vincent, Ind., to Buenabelle (Conover) and Samuel M. Sherman. The family moved to Independence, then settled in Moline. Sherman graduated from Moline High School in 1935.

In 1950 he married Verna Venn in Winfield. She died in 1997.

Sherman was a cabinetmaker. He was self-employed but worked for Kreonite Co. of Wichita for many years. He retired from that company in 1987. He had lived in Winfield since 1997.

Survivors include a stepson, Kenny Harpool, Wichita; a brother, Keith Sherman, Chanute; four sisters, Genelle Campbell, Mary Ellen Kelly, Pat Hanshaw and Barbara Hendricks, all of Winfield; and two grandchildren.
