Ardena Whaley

OXFORD – Ardena M. Whaley, 90, of Oxford, died July 16, 2002, at her home.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Union Cemetery in Winfield.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 8 tonight.

Whaley was born Nov. 4, 1911, in Winfield, to Gracie Mae (McCreary) and Charles O. Veach. The family moved to Latham where she grew up and graduated from Latham High School.

Whaley was a psychiatric aide at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center before retiring in 1976.

In 1938 she married Vernon V. Whaley in Winfield. He died in 1976. A son, Douglas, and a daughter, Twyla, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include three daughters, Opal Jones and Marrietta Coggins, both of Oxford, and Verna Mauney, Winfield; a brother, Floyd Veach, Thompson Falls, Mont.; two sisters, Margaret Kirkpatrick, Winfield, and Dorthea Roseman, Seattle; 20 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Judy Beavers

A gathering in memory of Judy (Rexroad) Beavers, formerly of Winfield, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the main pavilion at Island Park.

The family requests no flowers, food or gifts of any kind.

Survivors include her husband, Herb Beavers, Jacksonville, Ore.; three sons, Stacy Beavers and Phil Beavers, both of Medford, Ore., and Brad Beavers, Jacksonville; a brother, Bill Rexroad, Hutchinson; her twin sister, Phyllis Parker, Medford; and three grandchildren.

Alma Stevenson

Alma Lubirda Stevenson, 89, of Winfield, died July 14, 2002.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Arkansas City Church of Christ, 517 North A. Burial will be in Rosewald Cemetery, Guthrie, Okla.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home Friday from 2 to 8 p.m.

Stevenson was born Aug. 7, 1912, in DeKalb, Miss., to Rosie Lee (Haines) and Eugene Nicholson. The family moved to Guthrie where she was raised and graduated from Favier High School in 1930.

On Aug. 17, 1931, she married Simpson Stevenson in Guthrie. Married for 50 years, they moved in Winfield in 1944. He preceded her in death.

A minister's wife, she was a licensed mental health technician and worked at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for 24 years.

She was a member of the Church of Christ for 66 years.

Survivors include a son, Carl Stevenson, Denver; a daughter, Shirley D. Carter, Arkansas City; a brother, Rudy Nicholson, and a sister, Lula M. Calhoun, both of Wichita; and three grandchildren.

Barbara Ridgway

CEDAR VALE – Services for Barbara M. (Price) Ridgway were held at 1:30 p.m. July 16, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ben Killion officiated. Burial was in Dexter Cemetery.

Shirley Brown was the pianist, and John and Donna Wiseman were the vocalists.

Casket bearers were Charles Bennett, Aaron Bennett, Charles Ridgway, Jason McKee, Joseph Goodwin and Rex McKee. Olin Aemisegger was an honorary casket bearer.

A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through Wheeler Funeral Home.

Jewell Adams

WICHITA – Jewell Adams, 89, of Wichita, retired Cowley County and Wichita elementary school teacher, died July 17, 2002.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Faith Baptist Church, Andover. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Winfield. Downing & Lahey Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established with Faith Baptist Church, 417 W. Central, Andover, KS 67002, and the Shriners Children's Hospital, c/o Midian Shrine Temple, 130 N. Topeka, Wichita, KS 67202.

Adams was born Jan. 7, 1913, in Plainview, Ark., to Alma and William A. Findley.

She was a past member of the Andover school board and the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Greenberg, Assonet, Mass., and Katherine Adams, Wichita; and a great-granddaughter.

Rexford Sherman

Services for Rexford L. Sherman were held at 10:30 a.m. July 17, 2002, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jerre Nolte officiated, and Mandy Clower sang “Amazing Grace.”

Burial was in Resthaven Cemetery in Wichita.

A memorial has been established with the Walnut Towers Activity Fund.

Kay Moss

ARKANSAS CITY – Kay Francis Moss, 64, of Arkansas City, died July 17, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery chapel. The Rev. Steve Chambers will officiate.

A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Moss was born July 25, 1937, in Arkansas City, to Jettie B. (Havens) and Lawrence C. Brooks. She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1956.

On Sept. 4, 1979, she married Bobby G. Moss in Vancouver, Wash. They moved to Arkansas City in 1980. He preceded her in death.

A foster parent for over 20 years, Moss also worked for Cowley County Mental Health for several years.

She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary in Arkansas City.

Survivors include four daughters, Peggy Soule, Angela Turney and Jade E. Moss, all of Arkansas City, and Linda Ford, Newkirk; a son, Glen Virden, Arkansas City; a stepdaughter, Jenny Byrd, Alexandria, Tenn.; a brother, Larry Brooks, and a sister, Josephine Brooks, both of Arkansas City; and 10 grandchildren.

Matilda Dougherty

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Matilda Naomi “Tillie” Dougherty, 88, of Goodyear, formerly of Neodesha, died June 30, 2002.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard.

A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church, Neodesha. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard.

Dougherty was born Aug. 25, 1913, in Edwardsville, Ill., to Matilda and Henry Stuckwisch.

Survivors include a daughter, Arlene Steele, Goodyear; four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

David Chalmers

TAMPA, Fla. – David Chalmers, 48, of Tampa, formerly of Winfield, died July 17, 2002, at a Tampa hospital.

Cremation has taken place.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Shawn Sturm will officiate.

Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Chalmers was born Sept. 9, 1953, in Wellington, to Marguerite and Don Chalmers. He graduated from high school in Birchtree, Mo., in 1971.

He and Kelly Paffrath were married for 10 years before divorcing.

After high school, Chalmers went to work at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. He later received nurse's training at Butler County Community College. Shortly after that he moved to Florida and practiced in the health care field.

Survivors include three sons, Tristan Chalmers and Tyson Chalmers, both of Winfield, and Jarred Chalmers, San Diego; a daughter, Tiffany Chalmers, Wichita; his parents Don and Marguerite Chalmers, Birchtree, Mo.; and two brothers, Donald Chalmers, Springfield, Mo., and Richard Chalmers, Wellington.

Ardena Whaley

Services for Ardena M. Whaley were held at 1:30 p.m. July 18, 2002, in Union Cemetery. The Rev. John Horton officiated.

Whaley's grandsons and great-grandsons served as casket bearers.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Matilda Dougherty

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Matilda Naomi “Tillie” Dougherty, 88, of Goodyear, formerly of Neodesha, died June 30, 2002.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard.

A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church, Neodesha. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard.

Dougherty was born Aug. 25, 1913, in Edwardsville, Ill., to Matilda and Henry Stuckwisch. She attended school in Marine, Ill., and at the age of 12 was baptized in the Marine Christian Church.

At age 13, she started working at a local drug store, cleaning and helping the owner's wife with household chores for 25 cents an hour. After graduating from high school, she worked at a shoe factory in Moline.

In 1932 she married. The marriage ended after a brief time.

While working as a waitress, she met Carl L. “Bill” Dougherty, and they were married in Marine in September 1936. In 1937 they moved to Severy and in 1942 to Neodesha. There she worked as a clerk at Baden's Grocery Store for many years.

In 1957 they moved to Los Angeles where she worked as a clerk for a furniture company. Returning to Kansas in 1970, she and her husband opened a Daylight Donut Shop in Neodesha. Her husband died in 1979.

Dougherty moved to Goodyear in 1995 to be with her daughter and son-in-law.

Survivors include her daughter, Arlene Steele, Goodyear; a sister, Neodesha, four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A son died in 1952.
