Lois Williams

Services for Lois Belle Williams were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 24, 2002, at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Cheryl Harader officiated.

Vocalists were Christie Muret and Jenny Muret Bate. Marilyn Buffum was the organist, and Linda Bowman was the pianist.

A private burial was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Foster Grandparents Program.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lucy White

PONCA CITY – Services for Lucy S. (Harsh) White were held at 10 a.m. Aug. 23, 2002, at Grand Avenue Church of Christ. Larry Kearns and Charles Ivie officiated.

Music was “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “Beyond the Sunset.”

Burial was in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Ralph Billings, Jim Iraggi, John and Orville Garroute, Dale Rowe and George Sheets.

A memorial has been established with the Westview Boys Home, P.O. Box 553, Hollis, OK 73550.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Barbara Minor

ARKANSAS CITY – Services for Barbara Jean Minor were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 26, 2002, in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Wayne Harrelson officiated.

Music included “My Tribute,” and “Amazing Grace” and “Going Home” by Rhea Overbey.

Casket bearers were Dean, Don, Gilbert, Jimmy and Merle Overbey and Rick Qualls.

A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Wanda Taylor

SEDAN – Wanda Marie Taylor, 74, a longtime resident of Elk Manor Nursing Home, Moline, died Aug. 25, 2002, at Sedan City Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard, with Pastor Ted Smith officiating. Burial will be in Twin Grove Cemetery, Severy.

A memorial has been established with the nursing home.

Taylor was born Sept. 6, 1927, south of Severy to Charles Otis and Mamie (Jordan) Taylor. She became a resident of the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center at an early age. Since 1962 she had resided at Elk Manor Nursing Home.

She was baptized into the First Baptist Church, Howard, in 1975.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Lois Taylor, Carmel, Calif.

Jerry Calvin

Jerrold R. “Jerry” Calvin, 65, of 1923 Loomis, Winfield, died Aug. 26, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The family will be present from 6:30 to 7:30.

A memorial has been established with the church.

Calvin was born May 3, 1937, in Winfield, to Ralph and Pauline (Hubbard) Calvin. He was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1955 and Southwestern College in 1959.

He began working at Dawson Monument in 1953 and became general manager in 1976 and managing partner in 1986.

Calvin was a member of the Winfield Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce. He supported Southwestern College athletics and had worked on the “chain gang” since 1976. Calvin coached Little League baseball and football when his children participated.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, serving as deacon, moderator and trustee and helping with maintenance.

In 1958 he married Lola Duncan.

Survivors include his wife, Lola Calvin, a son, Tom Calvin, and a daughter, Cassy Hill, all of Winfield; his mother, Pauline Clifton, Wichita; two sisters, Carolyn Cox, Wichita, and Kathy Payne, New Strawn; and five grandchildren.

Elmo Bonesteel

Services for Elmo F. Bonesteel were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 27, 2002, at the Evangelical Free Church. The Rev. Scott Schaefer officiated.

Music included “In the Garden” and “How Great Thou Art,” performed by Rex Beeney; “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” performed by Vince Gill, and “The Marine Hymn.” Sara Weinert was the organist.

Burial was in Highland Cemetery with ceremonies by American Legion Post 10,Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 and Ancient Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 110.

Casket bearers were Gordon Dippel, Larry Johnson, Steve Kunkel, Jim Rowley, John Stoabs and Darryl Littrell.

Memorials have been established with the Evangelical Free Church and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Forrest Ashenfelter

CAMBRIDGE – Services for Forrest L. Ashenfelter were held at 10 a.m. Aug. 26, 2002, at the Cambridge Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Kay Hull officiated.

Music included recordings of “Grandpa,” by The Judds, and “”Go Rest High on That Mountain,” by Vince Gill.

Burial was in Cambridge Cemetery.

Honorary casket bearers were Blake Ashenfelter, Michael Bennett, Herb and Willis Brunton, Louis Lattin, Herb Rogers, Bob Tatum Sr. and Leo Weingart.

Casket bearers were Joseph Ashenfelter, Jason Braun, Harvey Moore, Bob and Richard Tatum and Ronald Whiteman.

A memorial has been established with the church.

Bert Keeney

PITTSBURG – Bert Orville Keeney, 92, of Pittsburg, formerly of Winfield, died Aug. 14, 2002, at Beverly Rehabilitation Center.

Services were held Aug. 17 at Brenner Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Dottie Forinash-Knetsch officiating. Burial was in Fredonia Cemetery.

Keeney was born Nov. 20, 1909, at Chadron, Neb., to Ernest and Elyda (Macumber) Keeney. He graduated from Rushville (Neb.) High School.

Keeney received undergraduate degrees in English and industrial arts from Chadron State College in Nebraska, a master's degree in industrial education from Kansas State Teachers College and a master's in education from the University of Minnesota.

On May 26, 1939, he married Lilly Coleman in Winfield.

He was a veteran of World War II and served at Great Lakes, Ill., and Attu, Alaska.

Keeney began teaching in 1931, first in Pittsburg and then Winfield. He taught at Pittsburg State University from 1946 until retiring in 1977. While at PSU, he established the metalsmithing, ceramics and sculpture programs.

A sterling silver coffee service he made was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York City, and he was listed the 1989 book “American Studio Jewelry Since 1940.”

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, PSU Retired Teachers Association, Crawford County Historical Society and Association of American Retired Persons.

Survivors include his wife, Lilly Keeney, Pittsburg; a daughter, Tess Michaelis, Fort Worth, Texas; a son, Dr. Tawn Keeney, Honokaa, Hawaii; and four grandchildren.

Rosalee Hoopes

IRVING, Texas – Rosalee (Brewer) Hoopes, 76, formerly of Wichita, died Aug. 26, 2002, at her home in Irving.

Services were at 10 a.m. today in South MacArthur Church of Christ Chapel with Chaplain Ed Sample officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. Donnelly's Colonial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 7610 Stemmons Freeway, Suite 600, Dallas, TX 75247, or to any other charity.

Hoopes was born Oct. 5, 1925, in Winfield, to Arthur and Tina (Boyles) Brewer.

Hoopes was employed in clerical work in Irving for two years and was a member of the South MacArthur Church of Christ. She volunteered her time to help people learn to read, taught Sunday school and was a member of the Republic Party.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include three daughters, Katrina Bentley, Boise, Idaho, Connie Fannon, Bastrop, Texas, and Mary Hoopes, Irving, Texas; two sons, Gene Hoopes, Keller, Texas, and Arthur Hoopes, Ruidoso, N.M.; a brother, George Brewer, Independence; a sister, Madalyn McQuiston, Decatur, Texas; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Howard Stuber

Services for Howard Lee Stuber were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 27, 2002, at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated.

Jennifer Haynes sang “On Eagles' Wings” and “There I Will Be.” Martha Brandenburg was the organist.

Honorary casket bearers were Bea Armstrong, Wally Barnes, Roger Brooner, Earl Devore, Carmen Gonzales, Mary Green, Stan Jenkins, Melvin Nellis, Bill Sturm and Jim York.

Stuber requested that his body be donated to the University of Kansas School of Medicine for research.

Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society, Boy Scout Troop 314 and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Jerrold Calvin

Services for Jerrold R. Calvin were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 29, 2002, at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Cheryl Harader officiated.

Musicians were Marilyn Buffum, organist; Jane Campbell, pianist; and J.K. Campbell, vocalist. Selections were “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.”

Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Honorary casket bearers were Bob Odell, Larry Rood, Steve Parks, Bob Flottman, Bill Callaway, Bill Allred, Phil Stover and Ralph Hanna.

Casket bearers were Gary Holloway, LeRoy Young, Marion May and Greg, Mario and Mike Tapia.

A memorial has been established with the church.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
