Loretta Pfortmiller

NATOMA – Loretta Pfortmiller, 67, of Natoma, died Aug. 29, 2002, at Plainville Rural Hospital, Plainville.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Peace Lutheran Church with burial in Peace Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Scott Watford will officiate.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Pohlman's Mortuary and at the church beginning an hour before the service.

Memorials have been established with Peace Lutheran Church and the Carcinoid Cancer Fund.

Pfortmiller was born Aug. 21, 1935, at Natoma, to Gustava and Josephine (Hackerott) Blank. She lived in the Natoma community all her life and graduated from Natoma High School.

On Sept. 21, 1952, she married Orville Pfortmiller at Natoma. She helped with the family's farming operation and was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband, Orville Pfortmiller, Natoma; two sons, Ricky Pfortmiller, Otterbein, Ind., and Scott Pfortmiller, Stafford; two daughters, Becky Mangus, Winfield, and Terri Rather, Garnett; a brother, Eldor Blank, Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Adeline Eickhoff, Natoma, Arloa Tichenor, Topeka, and Viola Pike, Jackson, Mich.; and six grandchildren.

Velma Barondeau

ARKANSAS CITY – Velma Mary Barondeau, 81, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 29, 2002, at her home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in Riverview Cemetery. The Rev. John Brungardt will officiate.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Barondeau was born Dec. 23, 1921, to Joy Sterling and Mary (Jacobs) Morton. She was raised in Arkansas City and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1940. She attended business college in Chilicothe, Mo.

On Nov. 21, 1942, she married Emil Barondeau in Winfield, and they resided in Arkansas City.

Barondeau was owner and operator of Tiny Tots Nursery School and Day Care for many years. Later she added dance classes.

She was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Emil Barondeau, Arkansas City; two sons, Emil Barondeau Jr., Corpus Christi, Texas, and Mike Barondeau, Arkansas City; a daughter, Mary Joyce Evans, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a sister, Delores Joyce Hylton, Wichita; three grandchildren, one stepgrandchild and four great-grandchildren.

Audine Buckle

ARKANSAS CITY – Audine Pearl Buckle, 68, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 28, 2002.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home with burial in Parker Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. before the service.

A memorial has been established with the Foster Grandparents Program.

Buckle was born Nov. 14, 1933, at Girard, to Roy H. and Delcie F. (Foiles) Buckle. She was raised in Arkansas City and graduated from high school there in 1949.

She attended Cowley County Community College and graduated from Kansas State University in 1953.

In 1953 she married Jerry C. Coffey, and they resided in Wisconsin. She moved back to Arkansas City in 1976.

Buckle had been employed as a teacher at the Serendipity School at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center and was a foster grandparent at Sacred Heart School at the time of her death.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Victory Chapter 151 of the Order of Eastern Star and was an officer of Take Off Pounds Sensibly.

Survivors include two sons, Steven Coffey, Durham, N.C., and Robert Coffey, Wichita; a daughter, Janet Coffey, Arkansas City; two sisters, Carolyn Harrington, Halstead, and Brenda Learned, Newton; and one grandson.

Ilene Parsons

ANTHONY – Ilene Parsons, 77, a longtime resident of Anthony, died Aug. 29, 2002, at Anthony.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Congregational Church and at 4:30 p.m. in Highland Cemetery, Winfield.

Friends may call until 5 p.m. today at Williams Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church or Victory in the Valley.

Parsons was born April 28, 1925, at Tisdale, to Clarence and Edith (Clements) Davenport.

On Dec. 10, 1941, she married Dr. B.L. Gardner at Winfield.

On Jan. 4, 1975, she married Robert R. Parsons at Anthony.

She was a homemaker and member of the First Congregational Church.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Parsons, Anthony; four sons, Greg Gardner, Hawaii, David and Mike Gardner, both of Winfield, and Wendell Gardner, Harper; two daughters, Deborah Ingstad, Maui, Hawaii, and Minneapolis, Minn., and Sue Lear, Anthony; a stepson, Jeff Parsons, and a stepdaughter, Diane Leland, both of Anthony; a brother, Clarence Davenport, Garland, Texas; seven grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild.

Cora McFarland

WICHITA – Cora E. (Quillen) McFarland, 82, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died Aug. 29, 2002, at her home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Mulvane Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Hillside Funeral Home East Chapel.

Memorials have been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, KS 67202; and Metropolitan Baptist Church, 525 W. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67213.

Survivors include four daughters, Illean King, Winfield, Patricia Kimrey, Haysville, and Judith McKee and Janet Schmidt, both of Wichita; a sister, Viola Bonat, Wichita; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mary Thomas

ARKANSAS CITY – Mary J. Thomas, 88, of Arkansas City, died Sept. 2, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery chapel. The Rev. Steve Chambers will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to any charity through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Thomas was born Aug. 23, 1914, at Independence, to Charles and Sarah (Rollins) Scott. She graduated from Independence High School in 1932.

In 1940 she married Boyd O. Thomas at Independence. They resided in Independence, Omaha, Stillwater, Ponca City and Winfield before settling in Arkansas City in 1965.

Thomas was a homemaker and had worked part time at the Alco store in Winfield. She had been a den mother for Cub Scout Pack 314 and a member of the Friendly Neighbors Club, Central Christian Church, Arkansas City, and First Christian Church, Winfield.

Survivors include two sons, Calvin Thomas, Winfield, and Richard Thomas, Arkansas City, and one grandson.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Maynard Struthers

PARSONS – Maynard Struthers, 87, of Parsons, died Sept. 1, 2002, at Labette County Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home with the Rev. Deborah Hanes Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Neodesha Cemetery.

The family will receive friends until 8 p.m. today.

Memorials have been established with Faith United Methodist Church and the American Heart Association.

Struthers was born June 20, 1915, at Clearwater, to Thomas S. and Emma (McQuillen) Struthers. He grew up in Medford, Okla., and graduated from high school there in 1934.

On July 21, 1938, he married Virginia Wilson at Medford.

Struthers was a farmer, and they moved to a farm north of Winfield in 1945 and to a farm near Neodesha in 1962.

His wife died Feb. 26, 1986.

Struthers moved to Parsons in 1995 and was a member of Faith United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Roger Struthers, Mukilteo, Wash.; a daughter, Sue Kingston, Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Helen Kraus, Enid, Okla.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Tommie Reynolds

Tommie Cene Reynolds, 48, lifelong resident of Winfield, died Aug. 30, 2002, at her home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service with burial in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 p.m. today. The family will be present from 6 to 7.

A memorial has been established with Second Baptist Church.

Reynolds was born Oct. 3, 1953, in Winfield, to Thomas J. and Marjorie (Wallace) Cochran. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1971 and from Cowley County Community College. She attended Emporia State University and graduated from Southwestern College with a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's degree in social work.

On Dec. 30, 1977, she married Paul Reynolds.

Reynolds was employed at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for 20 years until it closed. She later worked at the Social and Rehabilitation Services office in Wellington and Creative Community Living. At the time of her death, she was employed as a social worker in Adult Protective Services at the Winfield SRS office.

Reynolds was a member of the Second Baptist Church and served as treasurer of the board and in other capacities.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Reynolds, and a son, Tyson Reynolds, both of Winfield; a daughter, Kylee Reynolds, Wichita; and a brother, Steve Cochran, Winfield.

Esther Neubecker

Esther R. Neubecker, 60, of Winfield, died Aug. 31, 2002, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.

Neubecker was born May 2, 1942, in Winfield, to Carl and Maude (Stewart) Shields. She attended the Timber Creek grade school and graduated from Atlanta High School in 1960. She then worked at a cafe in Burden.

On Oct. 28, 1962, she married Don “Whitey” Neubecker at Burden. They lived in Burden, then moved to a farm south of Burden where they lived from 1978 until 1990. The family then moved to Winfield.

Neubecker was a homemaker and worked at the Cupboard and the Burden Cafe, both in Burden. After attending Cowley County Community College, she was employed as a certified nurse's aide at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for 10 years before retiring in 1996.

She was a member of the Burden United Methodist Church and had been involved in school, church and 4-H activities.

Survivors include her husband, Whitey Neubecker, Winfield; two sons, Craig Neubecker, Jacksonville, Fla., and Scott Neubecker, Chula Vista, Calif.; two sisters, Carol Shields, Winfield, and Carlene Foust, Tulsa; and two granddaughters.
