Helen Atkinson

DOUGLASS – Helen Atkinson, 91, of Douglass, a retired chief switchboard operator for Cities Service Gas Co., died Sept. 15, 2002, in Augusta.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Douglass Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Cliff F. Muci will officiate. Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Christian Church, 304 E. Fourth, Douglass, KS 67039.

Atkinson was born Jan. 15, 1911, in Terre Haute, Ind., to Margaret (Swalls) and Asa Jewel.

On Jan. 14, 1955, she married Lawrence R. “Bud” Atkinson in Salina.

A Douglass resident for 87 years, Atkinson was employed for over 30 years by Cities Service.

Survivors include her husband, Bud Atkinson, Douglass; and a half-sister, Norma Tracy, Napa, Calif.

Keith Atkinson

Keith Richard Atkinson, 39, of Winfield, died Sept. 18, 2002, at his home near Tisdale.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Tisdale United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Tisdale Cemetery. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita.

Atkinson was born May 22, 1963, in Winfield, to Peggy (Savage) and Glen Atkinson. He was raised and educated in the Winfield area. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1981 and from Cowley County Community College in 1984.

Atkinson worked for the City of Winfield as a gas service crew member from 1985 to 1997. He was then self-employed as a farmer in the Tisdale area.

Atkinson was a member of the Tisdale United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Peggy Atkinson, Winfield, and four brothers, Eric Atkinson, Alma, Stephen Atkinson, Lafayette, Colo.; Mark Atkinson, Rose Hill, and Gregg Atkinson, Wichita.

Brian Tyson

PONCA CITY – Brian Patrick “B.T.” Tyson, 39, of Ponca City, formerly of Winfield, died Sept. 16, 2002.

A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. The Rev. Doug Thatcher will officiate.

Friends may call at Trout Funeral Home until the start of the service Friday. The family will greet visitors from 5 to 8:30 tonight.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Ponca City, 1904 N. Union, Suite 103, Ponca City, OK 74601, or to the Brian Tyson Family Fund, First National Bank of Oklahoma, Ponca City.

The family will be at 701 W. Otoe, Ponca City.

Tyson was born Oct. 26, 1962, in Sacramento, Calif., to Sharon Louise (Marsh) and John Anthony Tyson. Because his father was in the Air Force, Tyson grew up in several foreign countries as well as in the United States.

He received a bachelor's degree in nursing and worked in Caldwell, Wichita, Wakefield and Winfield.

On New Year's Day 2001 he married Denise Lynette Atkins.

Tyson worked at Hospice of Ponca City and as an operator of the city's waste water treatment facility.

Survivors include his wife, Denise Tyson, and three children, Wesley, Jessie and Emma, all of Ponca City; his parents, John and Sharon Tyson, Grand Junction, Colo.; two sisters, Shannon Tyson, Cheyenne, Wyo., and Lisa Gerstenberger. Grand Junction; and a brother, Sean Tyson, Grand Junction.

Eldon White

Services for Eldon Ray White were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 18, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Dean Gilbert officiated. Burial was in Atlanta Cemetery.

A U.S. Army guard from Fort Riley performed military graveside honors, and the Burden Lodge of Ancient Free & Accepted Masons performed committal ceremonies.

Music included recordings of “To Where You Are,” by Josh Grogan, “Daddy's Hands,” by Holly Dunn, “How Great Thou Art,” by Jim Roberts, and “Precious Memories,” by Jim Reeves.

Honorary casket bearers were Mike Akers, Scott Braungardt, Gary Gibson, Dwight Peterson, Mutt Redford and Dale Tousley.

Casket bearers were Larry Cornelison, Steve Hamlin, Ray Holmes, Norris Johnson, Jim Turkle and Tom Turkle.

Memorials have been established with the Douglass Senior Center and the Midian Shrine Plane of Mercy in Wichita.

Caroline Richards

WICHITA – Caroline Rose Richards, 69, homemaker, of Wichita, formerly of Oxford, died Sept. 17, 2002.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Maize Park Cemetery, Maize. Downing & Lahey Mortuary, West Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Richards was born Feb. 25, 1933, in Milwaukee, Wis., to Edna (Seifert) and John Doffek.

A son, Charles, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Arnold Richards, and a son, Ron Richards, both of Wichita; three daughters, Pam Allen, Tulsa, Denise Stone, Wichita, and Susan Thompson, Valley Center; three brothers, Donald, Johnnie and Wallace Doffek, all of Milwaukee; two sisters, LaVerne Mays, Houston, and Evelyn Stade, Milwaukee; and nine grandchildren.

Paul Satterlee

UDALL – Services for Paul A. Satterlee were held at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 18, 2002, in Star Valley Cemetery east of Udall. The Rev. Don Foster officiated.

American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 provided graveside services.

Honorary casket bearer was Todd Matthews.

Casket bearers were Wally Brickey, Steve Flower, Rodney Hedges, Stan Nellis, Mark Satterlee and Scott Satterlee.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Abigail Moody

BURDEN – Abigail Ann Moody, infant daughter of Curtis Ray Moody and Amy (Bartlett) Nelson of Burden, died Sept. 18, 2002, at her home.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Abigail was born Aug. 29, 2002, in Winfield.

Survivors in addition to her parents are a brother, Staton Nelson, and a sister, Whitney Nelson, both of Burden; her grandparents, Susan Sparks, Gene Bartlett, Dennis Topper and Freda Hotchkin; and her great-grandparents, Martha Bartlett, Ralph Bartlett Sr., Ruth and Henry Sparks, Annabel Rich and E.C. Moody.

Lilly Smalley

Services for Lilly M. Smalley were held at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 19, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. David Geisler officiated. Burial was in the Lamont, Okla., cemetery.

Music included “Nearer, My God, to Thee” and “In the Garden,” performed by Anne Murray, and “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Amazing Grace,” performed by the Statler Brothers.

Casket bearers were Vernon Deets, Raymond Fox, Brett Lewis, LeVon Osborn, Doug Smalley and Russell Smalley.

A memorial has been established with the Burden United Methodist Church.

Abigail Moody

Services for Abigail Ann Moody were held at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 20, 2002, at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. David Geisler officiated. Burial was in Burden Cemetery.

Music included “Angels in Waiting,” by Tammy Cochran, and “God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You,” by N'SYNC.

Casket bearers were Clay Moody and Jake Haworth.

A memorial has been established with the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Foundation.

Maxine Kistler

L. Maxine Kistler, 81, of 1415 E. Sixth, Winfield, died Sept. 19, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Highland Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Kistler was born Dec. 28, 1920, in Lewis, to Dora (Kaufman) and Vern Hoar. She was raised in Lewis and graduated from Lewis High School in 1938. She later attended Southwestern College and taught school at Valley View.

On Sept. 11, 1942, she married Marvin Kistler in Wichita. They made their first home in Rock. Shortly after her marriage, Kistler was employed by Beech Aircraft in Wichita.

In the 1950s the couple moved to Arkansas City where she worked as a receptionist for Dr. James Hill. In 1988 they moved to Mission, Texas, where they resided for 13 years. In 2001 they returned to Winfield.

Kistler was a member of the United Methodist Church in Arkansas City, the Levi & Lace Square Dancers and the Winfield Camping Club.

A son, Merrill Kistler, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Marvin Kistler, Winfield; a daughter, Marvilyn French, Littleton, Colo.; a brother, Eddie Houston, Redlands, Calif.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Fred Jacobs

ARKANSAS CITY – Frederick Frank “Fred” Jacobs, 87, of Arkansas City, died Sept. 21, 2002, at the Kansas Veterans Home at Winfield.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Jesse Kindred will officiate. Cremation will follow the service.

A memorial has been established with the Parkinson's Disease Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Jacobs was born March 7, 1915, in Trego County, to Anna (Lutz) and Frank Jacobs. He was raised near Ellis and graduated from Ellis High School in 1933.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

On March 23, 1937, Jacobs married Ruth G. Kinzy in Ellis. They made their home in Wichita for several years while Jacobs worked in the oil fields. They later moved to Arkansas City where in 1959 Jacobs opened a welding and machine shop. He sold the business and retired in 1987.

Jacobs was a life member of Spencer-Ralston Post 1254 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

His wife died Oct. 4, 1991. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Richard LeRoy Jacobs and an infant.

Survivors include two daughters, Judith Ann McKee, Springfield, Mo., and Joan Long, Arkansas City; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
