Esther Thayer

MOLINE – Esther Mae Thayer, 90, longtime resident of Moline, died Sept. 22, 2002, at Elk Manor Nursing Home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Moline Cemetery. The Rev. Ted D. Davis will officiate.

Memorials have been established with Elk Manor Nursing Home and the First Baptist Church of Moline. Contributions may be left with Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Thayer was born Jan. 1, 1912, in Moline, to Mae Marie (Davis) and John William Miller. She graduated from Moline High School in 1933.

On July 21, 1936, she married Richard Charles Thayer in Howard. They made their home in Moline briefly, then moved to Oswego. In 1946 they moved to McCall, Idaho, where they lived for two years before moving to Horseshoe Bend, Idaho. In Horseshoe Bend Thayer served as postmistress until the mid-1960s. She and her husband moved to Emmett, Idaho, where she was employed in orchard work.

After her husband's death in 1979, she returned to Moline.

Thayer was a member of the Royal Neighbors and the Music and Literary Club of Moline. She joined the Moline First Baptist Church in 1933.

Survivors include her son, Ed Visser, Montgomery, Ala.; a brother, Melvin Miller, Moline, and a sister, Lola Foust, Moline.

Clifford Cochran

HAYS – Clifford Fred “Penny” Cochran, 78, of Hays, formerly of Winfield, died Sept. 23, 2002, at his home.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Frank X. Grinko will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Military honors will be performed by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

A parish vigil service will be held at 6:30 tonight followed by a Rosary led by the Knights of Columbus at 7 in Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight and from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with St. Joseph Catholic Church for masses in Cochran's memory.

Cochran was born Dec. 31, 1923, in Winfield, to Dorothy (Schmidt) and James Cochran.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army. He was a prisoner of war and received the Purple Heart along with many other awards.

On Nov. 24, 1948, he married Berniece Engel in Hays.

A truck driver, Cochran worked for Van Doran Industries, Whitlock Trucking and Popp Truck Lines.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1325, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Bea Cochran, Hays, and a sister, Pauline Cales, Winfield.

Maxine Kistler

Services for L. Maxine Kistler were held at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 23, 2002, in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Don McCormick officiated.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Maribel Magnusson

UDALL – Maribel Magnusson, 78, of Udall, died Sept. 23, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery, west of Winfield.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Memorials have been established with the First Congregational Church and Udall Volunteer Fire Department District 4. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Magnusson was born Feb. 11, 1924, on a farm near Udall, to Minnie (Long) and Frank Benjamin Wert. She graduated from Udall High School in 1941.

From 1942 to 1947 she worked on the assembly line at Clarkson & Startzer Aviation in Wellington. In 1948 she went to work as a clerk at Berg Drug Store in Winfield. In 1952 she began employment at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita where she worked in the wiring division on B-47s.

On June 4, 1955, she married Ira Magnusson in Douglass. They made their home on a farm east of Udall. She later retired from Boeing, became a full-time homemaker and helped her husband on the farm. He died May 19, 1996.

Magnusson was a member of the First Congregational Church, Olive Club and Udall Senior Citizens. She had been a Girl Scout and 4-H leader.

Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Pellegrini, Udall, and two grandchildren.

Elsie Royse

Elsie Royse, 100, of Cumbernauld Village, Winfield, died there Sept. 25, 2002.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church.

Royse was born Oct. 17, 1901, in Cowley County, to Laura Belle (Wade) and John Anglemyer.

On Oct. 5, 1925, she married Frank Royse in Winfield. He died April 23, 1976.

A lifelong Cowley County resident, Royse had worked as a sales clerk at Macy's in Wichita.

She was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Sleight, and a brother, Joe Anglemyer, both of Winfield; a grandson, Harry Royse, Platte City, Mo.; and two great-grandsons.

George Royse

LONGTON – George Austin Royse, 88, longtime resident of Longton, died Sept. 24, 2002, at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Longton United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery at Howard.

A memorial has been established with the Longton United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Royse was born March 2, 1914, in Hooker, Okla., to Ethel Pearl (Small) and Fred Eugene Royse. He attended rural school near Hooker before moving to the Elk Falls area with his family in 1924.

On May 10, 1938, he married Mable Grace Sprague in Sedan. Royse was a farmer and stockman in the Longton and Elk City area most of his life. His wife died June 7, 1980.

On Feb. 22, 1982, Royse married Ruth Osborn in Springfield, Colo. They made their home on a farm northwest of Elk City until moving to Longton in 1987. Royse had been a resident at the nursing home since January.

He was a longtime member of the Longton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Royse, Longton; three daughters, Jean Elda Miller, Lee's Summit, Mo., Mildred Beiter, Coffeyville, and Ethel Holloway, Elkhart, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Lyneva Bryan, Herington; a sister, Edith Sprague, Shawnee; six grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Adron Hebb

TYLER, Texas – Adron A. Hebb, 85, of Tyler, formerly of Howard, died Sept. 25, 2002, in Tyler.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Howard.

A memorial has been established with the church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Hebb was born May 18, 1917, in Howard, to Katie Elsie (Wells) and Louis Michael Hebb. He attended school in the Howard community

On Aug. 24, 1944, he married Madge Copeland in Phoenix City, Ala. After he served in World War II, Hebb and his wife returned to Howard where he owned and operated Hebb's Auto Supply for many years.

Hebb was a longtime member and past commander of Carter-Rader American Legion Post 149 in Howard. An active member of the First Baptist Church, he served as Sunday school superintendent, deacon and trustee and taught Sunday school for many years.

After moving to Tyler in 1995, he became a member of Sylvania Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Madge Hebb, Tyler, Texas; a daughter, Angela Drzewiecki, Danville, Calif.; three sons, Joe, Bob and Bill Hebb, all of Tyler; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Keith Atkinson

Services for Keith Richard Atkinson were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 20, 2002, at Tisdale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ellie Foster officiated. Burial was in Tisdale Cemetery.

Keith Anglemyer was the organist. Music included “Amazing Grace.”

Casket bearers were Eric, Stephen, Mark and Gregg Atkinson, Roger Schmidt and Craig Umholtz.

A memorial has been established with the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Doris Weber

ARKANSAS CITY – Doris Irene Weber, 86, of Arkansas City, died Sept. 25, 2002, at the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Center in Wichita.

The Rosary will be recited at 7 tonight at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, also at the church. The Rev. John Brungardt will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Weber was born Aug. 8, 1916, in Providence, R.I., to Rose (Richard) and Joseph LaPierre. She attended schools in Providence, Taunton, Mass., and Pawtucket, R.I.

She sang in many professional settings before marrying John Leffingwell in 1944. In 1947 they moved to Kansas. Soon after she became a waitress and worked for the Shamrock for 10 years before working at Brick's Restaurant for 12 years until her retirement.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for over 40 years.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, John Leffingwell, Clearwater; three daughters, Beverly Leffingwell, Wichita, Rosemary Santner, Olathe, and Nancy Audino, Mead, Colo.; two sisters, Jeanette Betty, Taunton, Mass., and Dorothy Higgens, Pleasant Valley, Colo.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
