Gregory Cook

ARKANSAS CITY – Gregory Lenn Cook, 27, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 1, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Pastor Gale Rider will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Christian Matthew Education Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Cook was born Oct. 10, 1974, to Kathy M. (Teufel) and Billy L. Cook. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1993. During his youth and high school he participated in football, wrestling and baseball.

He was employed by Future Beef until the company closed.

Survivors include a son, Christian Matthew, Wichita; his parents, Kathy and Bill Cook, and a brother, Jeff Cook, all of Arkansas City; and his grandmother, Ruby Cook, Cleveland, Okla.

John Vaughn

PAWNEE, Okla. – John Theodore Vaughn, 75, of Pawnee, formerly of Winfield, died Sept. 30, 2002, in Tulsa.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1112 E. 19th, Winfield.

Vaughn was born Jan. 1, 1927, in Independence, to Lola and Earnest Vaughn. He served in the U.S. Army and married Marilyn Pierce.

A Winfield resident from 1967 to 1997, Vaughn worked as an airplane mechanic at Strother Field and in Wichita.

He had been a minister of Jehovah's Witnesses since 1960.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Vaughn, Pawnee; three sons, Donald Vaughn, New Mexico, Delbert Vaughn, Pawnee, and David Vaughn, Winfield; a daughter, Diane Hartman, Stillwater; three sisters, Betty Ramsey, Chanute, and Bernadine Lowrey and Loraine Ecret, both of Pawnee; three brothers, Richard Vaughn, Frank Vaughn and Sam Vaughn, all of Olathe; and four grandchildren.

Dan Parmenter

Dan R. Parmenter, 70, of 1520 E. 19th, Winfield, died Oct. 2, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials have been established with the Winfield Dialysis Center and the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Parmenter was born June 20, 1932, in Mountain Park, Okla., to Capitola (Dickinson) and Raymond Parmenter. He and his family moved to Winfield when he was a child. Parmenter graduated from Winfield High School where he was all-state in basketball and tennis. He then attended St. John's College and was a member of the Armed Forces All Stars AAU Basketball Team.

In 1951 he was drafted into the U.S. Navy and served until 1955. After his discharge he lived in San Diego and then Port Orchard, Wash. He later returned to Wichita where he worked at Beech Aircraft Co. He then moved to Arkansas City where he worked in John Morell's beef department. He retired from Morell after 25 years of service.

On March 29, 1985, he married Sherri K. Jameson, and they made their home in Winfield.

Survivors include his wife, Sherri Parmenter, Winfield; a son, Tom Peirce, Burden; two daughters, Jeannie Schmidt, Austin, Texas, and Terri McDaniels, Derby; a brother, Roger Kindt, Gainesville, Texas; a sister, Karen Wright, Winfield; and eight grandchildren.

Raymond Trobaugh

Services for Raymond H. Trobaugh were held at 10 a.m. Oct. 5, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Pastor Larry Womacks officiated. Burial was in Cambridge Cemetery.

Music included “Amazing Grace,” performed by Willie Nelson, and “Cowboy Church,” performed by Red Steagall.

Honorary casket bearers were Aimee, Grant, Jason and Kelly Groene, Anastasia, Codie and Molly Trobaugh and Emily, Jared and Kelly Watt.

Casket bearers were Leroy Brooks, Donald Harper, Bill Hull, John Kielhorn, Howard Redburn, Roger Snyder, Randall Watt and Arlie Withrow.

Memorials have been established with the Central High School and Winfield High School chapters of FFA.

Ruth Thornton

WICHITA – Ruth D. Thornton, 85, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 5, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the Kansas Lung Association.

Thornton was born Aug. 27, 1917, to Kate H. (Horton) and Charles J. Kibler. She was raised in Niotaze.

On June 11, 1936, she married William “Phil” Thornton. He died Sept. 4, 1977.

Thornton was a cook at Logan's and McGills' restaurants in Winfield. In 1980 she retired from Leonida's Restaurant in Newton.

She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Winfield and Wichita.

Sons Charles Thornton and Bart Thornton, preceded her in death, Charles in 1935 and Bart in 1973.

Survivors include two daughters, Katherine Atkins, Wichita, and Patricia Keene, Wellington; eight grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Blanche Campbell

Blanche L. Campbell, 88, longtime resident of Winfield, died Oct. 5, 2002, at Cumbernauld Village.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.

Memorials have been established with the First Presbyterian Church and the Cowley County 4-H Development Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Campbell was born Dec. 18, 1913, in Cambridge, to Viva (Smith) and Noah Beamer. She attended the South Prairie school and graduated from Cambridge High School.

In 1931 she married Jim Cullumber. He died in 1934.

In the late 1930s she worked as a waitress at Candyland.

On Feb. 3, 1941, she married Harold Campbell. They owned and operated a dairy farm north of Winfield throughout their marriage. She was a homemaker and later worked at Kerr's clothing store as a saleswoman from 1962 to 1990.

Her husband died in 1980. In 1996 she moved to Cumbernauld Village because of failing health.

Campbell was a member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the church's Murray Rockhold Circle and had been a 4-H and Cub Scout leader.

Survivors include a son, Carrol Wray Campbell, Winfield; three daughters, Darlene Heacock, Lawrence, Judy Sutton, Pampa, Texas, and Susan Brooks, Austin, Texas; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Orrie Maddox

Orrie W. Maddox, 85, of Winfield, died Oct. 5, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Atlanta Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 tonight. The family will greet visitors from 6 to 7.

A memorial has been established with St. Jude Children's Hospital. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Maddox was born Dec. 5, 1916, in McPherson, to Ella (Sellers) and Dwight Maddox. He was raised and educated in McPherson.

When he was 14, he began working for the Shroder & Rockwell Carnival Co. in Atlanta. He later became a partner in the business which was then known as Rockwell & Maddox Carnival Co.

In 1942 Maddox married Lucille Ketterman.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed in El Centro, Calif.

Following his discharge in 1945, he returned home to purchase the carnival and renamed it Maddox Brothers Carnival Co. While in the carnival business, Maddox also was an oil pumper for Hammer Oil Co. in Leon.

His wife died in 1992.

On July 24, 1992, he married Bertha Williams in Newkirk. They made their home in Winfield. He retired from the oil business in 1996.

Maddox was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha Maddox, Winfield; four stepdaughters, Shirley Curtis, Phoenix, Anita Green, Arkansas City, Roberta Boomershine, Winfield, and Jeanie Purcell, Denison, Texas; a brother, Laverne Maddox, Salina; three sisters, Maxine Winn, Havasu City, Ariz., Doris Cumley, Wheatland, Mo., and Eva J. Sapp, Blackwell; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dan Parmenter

Services for Dan R. Parmenter were held at 10 a.m. Oct. 7, 2002, in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Scott Schaefer officiated.

Music included “Mansion Over the Hilltop” and “Amazing Grace,” both sung by Elvis Presley.

American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 performed commital ceremonies.

Memorials have been established with the Winfield Dialysis Center and the American Heart Association.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Wesley Hearlson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Wesley A. Hearlson, 46, of Kansas City, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 24, 2001.

Private services will be Saturday in Oxford Cemetery. Oxford Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Hearlson was born Aug. 2, 1955, in Wellington, to Maggie Lahoma (Pitts) and Francis Edward Hearlson. He lived in Winfield from 1966 until joining the armed forces.

He then moved to Kansas City where he worked as a technician in the fiberglass industry.

Survivors include two sisters, Marty Postawko, Joplin, Mo., and Georgia Hearlson, Winfield; five brothers, John Hearlson and Fred Hearlson, both of Allen, Texas, Ken Hearlson, Costa Mesa, Calif., Francis Hearlson, El Segundo, Calif., and Bill Hearlson, address unknown; and a half-sister and half-brother in Colorado.

Doris Hightower

MULVANE – Doris Maurine (Stambaugh) Hightower, 73, of Mulvane, a homemaker, died Oct. 8, 2002.

Her service will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Mulvane Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Senter-Smith Mortuary.

Memorials have been established with Heartland Hospice and the American Diabetes Association.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Hightower, Mulvane; a daughter, Glenda Lentz, Winfield; a brother, Gary Stambaugh, Larned and two grandchildren.
