Jube Whelchel

Jube P. Whelchel, 84, of Winfield, died Oct. 6, 2002, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. today.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Whelchel was born Sept. 23, 1918, in Picher, Okla., to Marie (Halver) and Bert Whelchel. He was raised and educated in Stafford.

On July 8, 1939, he married Beulah “Bee” Seley. The couple lived in Winfield a few years before moving to the West Coast. Whelchel served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and was stationed in Portland, Ore.

Whelchel was employed by various construction companies and worked in Oregon, Alaska, Californis, Nevada, Arizona and South America. He retired in 1975.

The couple lived in Washburn, Mo., before returing to Winfield in 1989. His wife died March 17, 2002.

Whelchel was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.

Survivors include a son, Richard Whelchel, Winfield; a sister, Emma Whelchel, Wichita; a brother, Bud Whelchel, Boston; six grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Marvin Martin

MEMPHIS, Mo. – Marvin W. Martin, 83, of Memphis, formerly of Douglass, died Oct. 6, 2002, in Columbia, Mo.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Douglass First Christian Church. Burial will be in Douglass Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Douglass Senior Center and the First Christian Church. Contributions may be made through Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home.

Martin was born Feb. 19, 1919, in Gordon, to Grace Pearl (Kelly) and Chancy William Martin.

On June 10, 1939, he married Phyllis Duryea in Newkirk. She preceded him in death in 1989.

Martin married Helen Clough on Aug. 26, 1994, in Douglass. The couple moved to Memphis eight years ago.

Martin was a retired farmer and a member of the Douglass First Christian Church, Douglass Masonic Lodge and Wichita Consistory.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Dianne Clark, Douglass, and Connie Voyles, Mansfield; two stepsons, Richard Clough, Olathe, and Robert Clough, Berea, Ohio; two brothers, Troy Martin, Russell, and Ronald Martin, Wichita; three sisters, Doris Beavers, Kelso, Wash., Virginia Shepherd, Longview, Wash., and Audrey Parkins, Grove, Okla.; six grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one stepgreat-grandchild and five great-grandchildren.

Orrie Maddox

Services for Orrie W. Maddox were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Pastors Lance Carrithers and Larry Womacks officiated. Burial was in Atlanta Cemetery.

Special music included “Go Rest High on that Mountain,” performed by Vince Gill.

Winfield Lodge 110 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons performed graveside ceremonies.

Honorary casket bearers were Darrel Boomershine, Jerry Boomershine, Orrie Laverne Cumley, Brian Curtis, Leland Hopper, Steven Nichols and LeRoy Renz.

Casket bearers were Jim Green, Jerry Hopper, Ron Jenkins, Monty Maddox and Tony Purcell.

A memorial has been established with St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

Ruth Thornton

Services for Ruth Thornton were held at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Tom Boese officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

June Vasey was the organist. Wilma Anglemyer was the soloist. Music included “Amazing Grace” and “Beyond the Sunset.”

Casket bearers were Ike Harris, Joe Harris and Jerry Atkins.

A memorial has been established with the Kansas Lung Association, 4300 Drury Lane, Topeka, KS 66604.

Blanche Campbell

Services for Blanche L. Campbell were held at 10 a.m Wednesday in the Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Revs. Jerry Hooley and Diane Massey officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Jennis Irvin performed a violin medley.

Casket bearers were grandsons Nathan Campbell, Brad Heacock and Doug Heacock, grandsons-in-law Scott Lowe and Eric Martin, and nephews Gary Stauffer and Greg Stauffer.

Memorials have been established with the First Presbyterian Church and the Cowley County 4-H Development Fund.

Jube Whelchel

Services for Jube P. Whelchel were held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Warren Traynor officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery. American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 provided military graveside services.

Music included Tennessee Ernie Ford singing “Whispering Hope.”

Casket bearers were family members.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.

Marie Hileman

HOWARD – Ida Marie Hileman, 91, longtime resident of Howard, died Oct. 9, 2002, at Howard Twilight Manor.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cresco Cemetery north of Howard.

A memorial has been established with Howard Twilight Manor. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Hileman was born Aug. 21, 1911, near Howard, to Addie Anna (Jolly) and Ormand Jackson Coon. She attended rural Elk County schools and graduated from Severy High School.

On March 22, 1932, she married Ivory Virgil “Boots” Hileman. They operated a farm northwest of Howard for many years. She was a homemaker. Her husband died Jan. 10, 1983.

Hileman was a longtime member of Howard Rebekah Lodge 154.

Survivors include two sons, Max Hileman, Girard, and Orval Jack Hileman, Newberry Springs, Calif.; a daughter, Betty Jane Goff, Thibodeaux, La.; eight grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Frances Folck

H. Frances Folck, 94, a resident of Winfield Rest Haven, died Oct. 9, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the First Presbyterian Church.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Folck was born Sept. 23, 1908, in Iowa, to Grace (Garrison) and Frank A. King. She was raised in Pittsburg where she graduated from high school.

In 1927 she married Leo Folck. They moved to Winfield in 1930. He died in 1991.

For several years she was a dental assistant for Dr. Robert Olson.

She was a member of Chapter CU of P.E.O. and a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was active in the women's circles.

A son, Richard Folck, died in 1977.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Wright, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Emma McIntosh

DAMON, Texas – Emma Jane McIntosh, 82, of Damon, Texas, formerly of Atlanta, died Oct. 10, 2002, in Sweeny, Texas.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Needville, Texas, Public Cemetery. Stan Rule will officiate.

Baker Funeral Home of West Columbia, Texas, is in charge of arrangements.

McIntosh was born Nov. 2, 1919, in Wilmerding, Pa.

She was executive manager for Dillard's Department Store from 1975 to 1987.

She was a member of the Atlanta Christian Church.

Survivors include a son, Joseph Douglas McIntosh, Richmond, Texas; two daughters, Margaret “Peggy” Ann Stout, Atlanta, and H. Jeanne Stapleton, Damon; a brother, Adolph Buenting, Saltsburg, Pa.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Geraldine Slocum

WICHITA – Geraldine “Gerry” Doyle Slocum, 63, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died in a Wichita hospital Sept. 17, 2002.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Sept. 23 at the Emporia Avenue Church of Christ. Burial was in Rest Haven Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association of Kansas, 4300 SW Drury Lane, Topeka, KS 666604-2419. Contributions may be made through Rest Haven, 11800 West Highway 54, Wichita, KS 67209.

Slocum was born Dec. 21, 1938, in Haines City, Fla., to Myrtle (McPeters) and Jesse Pinner. In 1957, after graduating from high school in Highland Falls, N.Y., she attended Barbizon School of Modeling and modeled in New York.

In June 1957, she married John L. Hill in the West Point Cadet Chapel, West Point, N.Y. She married John Patrick “Pat” Doyle in December 1968 in Hawaii, and they lived in the Winfield and Douglass areas for a number of years. In November 1989, she married Bernard Slocum in Wichita.

In the 1980s, Slocum worked at a number of Winfield restaurants. During that time, she obtained schooling to become a certified medical aide. She was known in the Winfield, Douglass and Wichita areas for her years of work in private health care and at the Sedgwick Plaza in Wichita.

Slocum was a member of the Emporia Avenue Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Bernard Slocum, Wichita; three sons, Michael W. Hill, Winfield, Mark B. Hill, Hutchinson, and Matthew B. Hill, Appleton, Wis.; and 13 grandchildren.
